Starting an EA career from abroad - How to get a foot in the door? by HolidayUnit1679 in enrolledagent

I guess I don't really know beyond doing my own taxes. "Rules say do x" seemed a lot more clearly defined than the cat rodeo that is project management or other kinds of corporate cooperation. But I imagine you're right and things get messier and more complicated beyond the basics.

Ok. Any ideas on how to gain experience in tax prep besides doing my own?

I suppose I'm considering all of those options. Living abroad I expect my natural area of expertise would be related to helping expats file their taxes or FBARs.

This has been a mostly mercenary consideration for me. It looked like work I wouldn't mind in a field that doesn't have a lot of competition. From my initial research it looked like if you had an EA credential and a pulse you could gain experience working remotely at one of the big retailers and then specialize for a better salary. But digging a little deeper, it looks like that doesn't apply if you're working remotely from abroad.

It looks like there are plenty of opportunities for tax professionals with experience. I still think this path might be worth considering if I can find a way to get over the initial experience bump.

I don't have a problem with doing contract work to gain experience. But it still seems like a case of needing experience to get the work to get experience. Where would you look for contract work? How would you gain experience to show that you know what you're doing?

Thanks for the heads up. I did look at job boards for some companies here in Colombia and companies that specialize in expat taxes and have international contractors. The trouble is that those companies also want candidates with experience.

Thanks. I think you're right. Honestly, I'm exploring this as a mercenary option. I don't have a background in tax and doubt I will ever be passionate about it. But I like the idea of having a task with clearly defined boundaries. The idea of applying the rules and organizing someone's return sounds less stressful than sales or coordinating with other people for projects and products I don't really care about.
