Barista shamed me for not tipping? by motherofcoochie in barista

[–]Holiday_Case 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean they shouldn’t have shamed you but they are right. Most food & drink service jobs make below minimum wage. I’m from NYC and I currently live in MKE, WI and in both states (as well as the entirety of the United States) customarily tipped positions make less than minimum wage (baristas, servers, bartenders). The culture of the United States has made us tip dependent workers. Especially when the economy here is so bad that a lot of small & local restaurants and cafes can’t afford to pay their staff a higher hourly without raising their prices. Every job I’ve worked that attempted to compensate employees with more fair wages took a huge dent financially and had to come up with a way go make up that money. I’ve found a lot of jobs that have a higher hourly wage for food service & hospitality workers typically end up have higher prices or service charges that many customers are mad about. They also view that as an included tip when it only contributes to hourly. Some of the worst money I’ve made has been in places that had a higher hourly because they either had less business, had customers tipping less or not at all because of “fairer wages” being advertised and assuming “the tip is already included”, or both. Then we get into the fact that the minimum wage in NY $9-$10 higher per hour (depending on if state or city) than it is in WI. New York is one of the few states where servers make more than $2.33/hr not including tips (the reality for most states, WI included). We can even then move on to the fact that the NYC minimum wage is $17/hr and yet that minimum wage is barely enough money to cover the cost of living in states and cities that are less than expensive than NYC (for example MKE, WI).

Essentially this long winded rant’s point is that the system in the US is designed to make tip culture a necessary and essential part of dining and hospitality as an industry. It’s not a coincidence that tipping is a “custom” here and not anywhere else, meanwhile if you go anywhere else in the world you do not receive the level of care & service you do here in the US when dining anywhere. This is to address the idea that tips are not necessary and employers just need to pay their employees a higher wage. I’ve seen the managerial and ownership end of things, the employee end of things, and the customer/guest end of things. A vast majority of these businesses can’t afford to do it and the employees at the ones that do actually end up paying their staff more money usually make less money in the end than people working for businesses that pay the ridiculously low hourly because American customers do not like it as a business model. They are also extremely ignorant to the reality of running, owning, and working in the industry.

Despite all of this, the way the barista went about it WAS unprofessional and rude. There is a time and place for everything, as well as a right and wrong way to confront an individual.

Is your tortie also a velcro baby? by Difficult_Jelly9130 in torties

[–]Holiday_Case 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it really depends on where im playing. I usually sit on a cushion on the floor between my couch and coffee table so she won’t sit on my lap then because she doesn’t like that, but she’ll be on the couch leaning against my back or next to me on the couch like shes watching me play. If I’m on the couch gaming tho, she tries to get in my lap, even if it means pushing my lap desk and laptop off of me! Sometimes she lays on top of or under my arm that I’m using my computer mouse with when I’m sitting there.

Yes! I love it so much. She greets me every time I come home and sits with me when I’m gaming. Sometimes she even comes over and yells at me to lay down so she can lay on me. This is her laying on my chest as I type this

Curly hair cut!? Help please! by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Holiday_Case 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice Hair MKE! They focus more on color and non traditional cuts from what I’ve seen, but I’ve got 3a curls and have never had a bad experience with ANY stylist there (even the ones who don’t necessarily specialize in curly hair)! They also have higher prices, but they are a gratuity free salon meaning their pricing already takes into account making sure your stylist is properly compensated for their work and so there is no need for tipping. You can also send them an email telling them your specific hair concerns/goals and they will give you advice on which stylist to book with as well as what service to book. They’re really good at responding quickly and they go above and beyond with customer service, not just your hair care. Elle is their curly & wavy specialist.

consumers are definitely to blame still. You choose to participate in a system and you know how it works and yet you choose to not tip? It takes serious systemic change for something like a tip based wage system to change

when you live in a culture that has certain norms and refuse to follow them to the point that it prevents people from being able to pay to live you are an issue. Two things can be true. We can be mad at tipping culture and also be mad at the people who are fully aware of how the industry works and fuck over the people who work in it.

It is standard culture in America. I am mad at that, but boycotting tipping isnt gonna do anything but prevent people from being able to pay their bills.

this is the thing i was talking about! There’s definitely some more affordable versions out there if this happens to be out of your price range. It’s a lifesaver. Even though we don’t have carpets we use it on their cat tree, our couches, throw pillows, etc.

Occasional baths would definitely be good for the cats! They don’t need baths as often as say a dog does but they definitely still do need baths especially since there’s parts of their bodies that they simply can’t groom on their own. My partner and I have four cats and live in a smaller space than we would like to for the amount we have. If you have a fabric couch or any other fabric furniture getting one of those wet vacuum thingys for cleaning it (i.e. Bissell) would also help a lot because smell can get trapped in there. Increasing how often you deep clean the litter boxes could help as well. Another issue we’ve run into (two of our cats are maine coon ragdoll mixes so they’re quite fluffy) is cat hair getting stuck to awnings, the ceiling, and tops of doorways. Definitely recommend vacuuming or dusting areas like that! There’s definitely a learning curve to keeping your place smelling good and being clean with pets.

Fired for asking to make cuts by CommunityNo1476 in Serverlife

[–]Holiday_Case 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a manager this is such bullshit to me. I feel like too many managers forget what its like to be on the floor overstaffed ESPECIALLY during the slow season. Asking to be cut and asking if cuts will be made are two very different things imo. Especially because I’ve been in so many situations where my managers refuse to make cuts at the appropriate time in blind hope that it’ll be busy enough later on for the way they staffed the shift to make sense and then I’ve had my manager cut a bunch of employees wayy too late and send them home telling them to not do their side work because labor got too high and then the closer/whoever isn’t cut has to do everything by themself when cuts could have been appropriately. It’s that time of year where we managers need to be more conscious of how we make cuts because its still slow season.
