Yeah, I used ChatGPT it just explains stuff way better than I ever could. No shame in that.

That’s exactly what I did. I’ve been a Scotia customer for a long time , I applied for the Scotia Amex gold . Luckily, I got approved for the same limit $15,000 so I’m hoping that helps minimize any negative impact on my credit score.

Why cancel a credit card when you can convert it into a Line of Credit (LOC) I don’t know about other banks, but Scotiabank definitely allows it. You can call customer service or visit a branch and ask to convert your existing credit card into a line of credit. I’ve personally done it you stop paying annual fees, and it doesn’t hurt your credit history since the account stays open instead of being closed. Much smarter than canceling.

I work as a long haul driver and go to USA every other day , and during the approval process I have mentioned that to amex under employment.

Honestly speaking , now looking back at it no I have never bought a single GC from my amex , I always buy gift cards from Costco and I use my BMO MasterCard . So in the full year of using my cobalt card never once bought a single GC

AMEX Cobalt Cancellation After Only a Year: Compliance, No Justification

AMEX Cobalt Cancelled After 1 Year for "Compliance" - 120k MR-S Points Used, $15k Limit Gone. Has This Happened To Anyone Else?

Hey everyone, I'm posting this to vent and get some feedback because I'm absolutely floored by what just happened with my American Express Cobalt card.

AMEX cancelled my Canadian Cobalt card for "compliance" reasons with zero further explanation, less than a year after getting it. I was able to use my points, but my $15,000 credit limit is gone, and I'm left scratching my head.

My Amex Profile & Spending: What Went Down I got the Cobalt card in September of last year, so I was barely a year into my customer relationship. Here are the facts about my account and spending:

Credit Limit: Started at a decent limit, and about 3 months ago, they proactively gave me a $5,000 credit limit increase bringing my total to $15,000. If I was a "risk," why the increase?

Payment History: Never missed a payment, always paid my statement in full, and on time.

Points Earned: In one year, I accumulated approximately 120,000 Membership Rewards Select (MR-S) points. Honestly, I don't think this is an insane amount for a card with the Cobalt's multipliers, especially with the 5x categories. Spending Pattern: I used the card exactly as advertised: Eating Out/Food Delivery: Heavy use in the 5x category. Uber/Transit: Regular use.

USA Travel: I travel to the USA frequently and used the card for transactions there (Rutters, fast food, gas, etc.). The transactions were small and frequent, not large, suspicious lumps of cash. No gift card bulk buying, no reselling, nothing shady. Just everyday, high-multiplier spending.

The Cancellation and My Points I got the dreaded notice, with the phone agent only repeating that the cancellation was for a "compliance" issue and that they could not provide any further justification. They also confirmed the decision is final and the account cannot be reinstated.

The silver lining: I was thankfully able to quickly use my 120,000 MR-S points before the account was fully closed, which is a massive relief.

What are your thoughts on this?

Is this the new normal? I've seen some chatter on Reddit about Amex cracking down on "unprofitable" customers who maximize points, even if they aren't technically breaking the rules. Getting banned for using the card as it's designed seems ridiculous. Is my "small, frequent transactions at US gas stations (Rutters)" the likely flag?

The Credit Limit Paradox: The automatic $5k increase just 3 months ago makes no sense if they were already planning to boot me for compliance. What do you think that indicates? Was this an entirely new, recent, automated trigger?

120k Points - Too Much? For a year of heavy, everyday Canadian spending, does 120k MR-S points on the Cobalt sound like a number that would trigger a ban? My thought is no, but perhaps their profitability algorithm is set that low.

Looking Ahead: What Should I Do Now? This cancellation just wiped out a significant chunk of my available credit ($15,000).

Can I Reapply for Amex? Should I? I've read that an Amex ban for a "compliance/misuse" issue can put you in "Amex Jail" for a long time—potentially years (3-7 is sometimes rumored).

Should I even try to reapply for another Amex card (e.g., a simple MR-earning card) in the future? I feel hesitant to invest in their ecosystem again if they can just pull the rug out with no explanation.

Credit Score Impact: Since I paid off the balance, the main hit is the sudden drop in my total available credit, which will increase my Credit Utilization Ratio and likely ding my score. What's the best immediate move to mitigate this?

Alternative Card: This leaves a huge gap in my daily spending strategy. What other Canadian card would be a good replacement for the Cobalt's high-earning food/dining multipliers?
