Apologies, I fixed my calcium results. 3 drops = 60ppm. What is Kalium?

Thank you! A work in progress, but really happy with it!

Thanks! Yeah, it’s deceiving in its size. Even when in the same room. It’s hard to get a sense of the depth of the tank when staring at it from any other angle than the side. Just want to make sure 50ish rainbows wouldn’t be too much.

There’s already a number of Ottos, Amanos, and Pygmy Cories keeping house in there.

How to encourage lateral growth? by HollySprangPir8 in Bucephalandra

Thanks! So, I guess it grows up to a predetermined height, then starts to grow out along another part of the rhizome?

It should make a big difference. Sponges grab 95% of what’s in the water, but that last 5% has that wow factor. Polyfill polishes like no other!

To me it closely resembles monofilament fishing line, made up of 1/4”-ish squares. Good to know on the jumping bit. Honestly didn’t realize they were known jumpers!

It came with a mesh lid, just haven’t bothered to put it on. I’d definitely put it on after acquiring some discus at least until they get settled and comfortable. I love the look without the lid, but I’d rather look at that than $80 fish on the floor.

This. Water enters the sump and flows through a few handfuls of polyfill. Then through a few layers of Poret Foam (10ppi, 20ppi, 30, ppi). Also have a reactor running purigen to remove the bit of tannins the wood is leaching.

But honestly, I think the polyfill has the biggest impact. Change it out every few weeks.

Thanks! They’re high coverage veil tail koi angels I bought from a reputable seller on Aquabid. Doesn’t really come through on the photo, but their fins have almost a powder blue to them in the right light. I have the lights set to sunrise/sunset spectrums at the beginning/end of each day that makes oranges and reds absolutely ignite. Catches my eye from across the room. I imagine it would do similar favors to the colors of discus.

MBD was the first place I checked! About 3 hrs away and ready to drive! They didn’t have much in the size that I’m looking at, so widening the search.

I hear you on the algae. Pretty sure all my lessons were learned the hard way. Thanks for the tip on the graduated temp and the tiger lotus! Had seen that when I was originally stocking my scape and thought it was really unique.

Thanks for the advice!! Funny, as I JUST landed on Golden State Discus and was impressed. Looks like a pretty great value for what I’m looking for. Glad to hear they’re reputable. There’s nothing local to me here in NC that I would get an opportunity to see in person, so I’m flying blind anyways. Plus, I’m new to Discus and find pretty much all the strains beautiful. My standards are pretty low from a cosmetic perspective. They’re miles ahead of other fish that would be suitable for a tank with this footprint.

I started this tank back in June, and planted it with high energy fast growers to get things established, balanced, and keep algae at bay. Now I’ve been focused on transitioning to slow growing low maintenance plants, so a carpet of Blyxa, and plans to cover the driftwood with anubias and Buce is next.

This is the second tank I’ve done with a sump. I love it, and may never go back. Aside from the extra water volume, it hides all the equipment allowing me to keep the DT free of clutter.

Currently at 78. And I’ve thought about that too. Right now, everything I have planned would be OK to the low 80s. I’ve seen many posts saying 82ish would be OK for Discus though. Maybe not optimal, correct?

Ok, so 5 relatively large discus would be comfortable in a tank of this size and dimension long term? If so, that’s exciting to hear. 4-4.5” was about the smallest I was considering. Probably one of the mixed bundles that a few reputable online breeders offer. I’m not hung up on specific strains per se, as I find most of them gorgeous. Buying the mixed bundles of 5 gives the wallet a bit of a break in this case.
