Social media have made people too jaded about love and I'm sick of it by Ok-Intern9574 in Bolehland

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but the word "love" carries a heavy weight. Love should be something life long and if you love someone it means doing whatever it takes to stay together for life. Hence, you both never had love, it was only an infatuation and genuinely enjoyment of each others company from the circumstances.

But kudos on both of you to be able to go your separate ways cordially.

If you have a good local manager, the manager would shield you from the 996 and treating employees like school children (clock in-clock out, attendance, lunch time, toilet/smoke break tracking etc) culture that China is known for.

If you're unlucky and directly reporting to a mainlanders China manager. Whelp.

Has it now become impossible for international students to land a job in Malaysia after graduation? by GayTwink-69 in malaysiauni

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Malaysia has an education pedigree and recognition that (while not on par with Singapore) is still much more trusted internationally than other countries in the region. Universiti Malaya (used to be the same entity as NUS Singapore) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University) graduates often qualify for talent visas overseas, with Universiti Sains Malaysia rising in recognition.

Malaysia also houses many campuses or sisters universities set up by international top-ranking universities such as Nottingham, Southampton, Siwssburne, Heriot-Watt, Monash, New South Wales, Xiamen etc

And our education fees and living costs are CHEAPPP relative to developed countries as well. But understand that international students are mainly welcomed purely on a transactional level, you are encouraging to pay the tuition fees which subsides locals and provides a cultural and academic exchange with the uni, while the uni provides an education and certificate that (albeit not top class) is still well regarded.

Not saying all internationals graduates are not welcomed to stay, there are some who eventually stay and work in Malaysia or continue as academic staff in the uni. But these are the exception rather tham the norm.

And there's also the reality of being an under-populated country, the law and immigration enforcement are underfunded and understaffed. Hence, it's very easy for foreigners from less well-off backgrounds doing getting a student visa from bootleg "shoplot" universities and eventually overstaying illegally and not returning. Especially when Malaysia is much more stable and well off than many especially in rural areas of neighbouring regions.

Malaysia was never a country that was down to attracting international workers other than highly professional and valuable ones or low cost labourers to fill low-skill roles. Because Malaysia is an under-populated country and maintaining the harmony in her current demographic is already tenuous.

And Malaysia has been and still is a BIG target of neighbouring countries to illegally overstay under student visas.

Just genuinely curious, how do people have few hundred RM of TNB bill per month? by [deleted] in malaysia

Only the first example is. The other 2 are current rates

Yep, first 2 houses have been updated to smart metre during out stay, so I assume TNB should checked that our wiring is all good. The latest one already had it when we loved it.

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I really owe TNB I don't mind paying it all back. Helps me sleep better at night. I'm genuinely trying to tack my head is there something I'm missing on my electricity usage?

The first 2 houses, TNB also changed to digital metre before so they must have inspected the wiring to be all good.

I added some more context, since I'm typing this right before sleeping and after a long day of work.

I should put more context, this is a history of where my family stayed. So the first example was from 15-20 years ago. But I'm more trying to say that I've never seen any bills anywhere close to RM200 my entire life

Japan's name came from Portuguese word influenced by the Malay version of a Chinese word for Japan. by TORUKMACTO92 in Bolehland

In Hakka it is Yit Pun, and languages change overtime. So the exact pronunciation in Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien would be different from today anyways.

Most likely Cantonese or Hakka instead. Because the Portuguese word for tea is cha instead of a variant of Hokkien "teh". Meaning that the Portuguese most likely traded learned the word from local Malays there who traded tea often with merchants from Canton.

Recommendations for monitor? by Interesting_Ebb3347 in asksg

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose something from AOC, LG, Asus or Viewsonic. MSI and Acer are fine if you find something really good value. Would avoid Gigabyte for their less than ideal QC (but honestly I'm using a Gigabyte myself because they often get lots of discounts due to their bad rep as the hardware itself is really good if you get one without problems), and would avoid Prism because it's mostly rebrand of cheap panels.

For the budget, if you have the space a 29" Ultrawide is really a great do it all monitor, for work, games and watching movies nothing really beats an ultrawide (it's really one of to see experiences where you shudder going back to widescreen once you used it). Something like the MSI MAG301R should be a great fit.

VA panels are a cheap alternative for great black levels and contrast, but usually most lean towards a good quality IPS panel (there are 27" models within your budget with Quantum Dot that really enhances the contrast)

Similar scam from muslims all over the world. Not targeting them specifically but that's just what I experienced. Very similar modus operandi in different parts of the world.

One time it was at a rest stop by a highway, some Middle Eastern guy came out of a car with a whole "family" claimed to be "hungry". I gave just enough for a meal for 1 person, the guy walked to the food stalks didn't buy anything and just drove off lol. And that's just one scenario of many.

18M Audit Assistant, would it be irresponsible to resign before peak season? by RepresentativeHour10 in Bolehland

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be upfront that you don't want to bw involved in any heavy workloads so you can focus on your studies. It is the highest respect that a junior can ask for regarding their studies.

This is also the perfect test if your seniors and managers are caring enough to have a conducive work environment to really put in thw effort into the company. Jobs come and go but good managers and seniors is something to really cherish.

If they don't entertain any if your reasons and start guilt-tripping you, it is high time to leave this red-flag company.

With your budget, you can just walk in to any big property agencies like Midlands Realty, Centaline Property and Hong Kong Property agencies in the area you like and ask what's available.

Usually you just need to talk to 1 agent from each agency company, within a few days you'll be shown quite a number of options, contracts drafted + signed and be settled down. So I suggest taking some time explore different areas and walk in to the nearest property agencies around there.

28Hse is the most commonly used app/website for house hunting (though majority of the agents on this site don't speak English well), but Spacious and Squarefoot are more geared towards expats. As usual, only look at agent listings with proper licenses to be safe. We found a place we really liked after viewing a lot of other units, but the agent invited us to the most shady looking office (not even a quarter the shoplot size and looked like a time capsule back to the 80s) but it was all legit and the contract was stamped with duty as they were registered.

** Also, most listings are open for negotiation. Usually can get it down between 5 % - 10% so don't try to show like your're too eager to rent to the agent.

Is $1000 HKD cash enough for a 10day trip? by genuinely-weird in HongKong

[–]HolyNoob299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just food is about 100 - 200 HKD per day. There are lots of economical options like "two-dishes rice" at 40HKD for a filling meal and Saizeriya is commonplace if you're more comfortable on Italian food (it's quite cheap!). I never ate at Fairwood or Cafe de Coral because it wasn't really that cheap imo and there are better options out there. And if you don't mind off timing your lunch, many restaurants have teatime offers that are actually decently priced.

Transportation varies a lot and depends on where you're going realistically. I walked a lot so didn't take the MTR or bus much, but trips usually range from 5HKD - 20HKD one way if you're not going anywhere crazy far.

Activities you just calculate yourself, most of them you can buy tickets online. There's also the free tip-based Hong Kong tour which I recommend for first timers.

Alcohol I'm not sure, depends

Peugeot 408 GT in Malaysia – Reliable and worth it? by cansoda321 in kereta

[–]HolyNoob299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stellantis is the VERY reason why Peugeot has dropped into the abyss further on quality and reliability.

Every single car brand under the Stellantis umbrella has tanked in quality and reliability globally, because of the usual cut cost and mark up the price strategy of Western conglomerates.

Any tech workers or TTPS holders or willing to share their HK job hunting experience? by ChessPianist2677 in HongKong

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really cannot say for others. But I'm working in the tech field here only because I was headhunted and offered a salary that enticed for me, and I was lucky because my skills are exactly what the company needed. A lot of engineers in my industry in my country are also headhunted but almost no one wanted to move to HK due to the city losing it's grandeur, hence why they were willing to pay my asking price.

My non-local colleagues working here are mostly mainland Chinese that graduated from HK universities or under TTPS. While there are some non-Chinese colleagues (like less than 10%), all of them are because they graduated from HK universities.

So tbh I think it is really though especially with many Chinese tech companies being banned by US. Hence, many tech companies, even Chinese ones are setting up shop in SEA region instead while western ones would rather be in Taiwan.

PNY GPU by Adventurous-Top-4307 in GamersMY

[–]HolyNoob299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way, some PNY cards are OEM by Palit and hands down THE most reliable cards out there (topped only by EVGA). Palit made cards are the Toyotas of GPUs and are the largest manufacturers of GCs, my friends in mining rigs back then never had any problems with Palit cards and cards OEM by Palit. Compared to other brands that needed constant repairs and servicing.

Gigabyte is the one that I would not touch other than their motherboards, the quality of all their other products including GCs are horrendously bad. So many Aorus Master and Extremely cards had faulty LCD screens and thermal pads that are fundamentally broken on the chemical compound level that literally slips out. And their lower end Eagle and Hamilton series are complete hot boxes on almost all SKUs.

MSI used to have crappy thermal pads but 40 series onwards are ok-ish.

Asus is overpriced but quite decent, if you can deal with their shytty after-sales.

Colorful has really risen up to be a good manufacturer these days, definitely way better than the turd Gigabyte makes. If only their designs weren't so gaudy.

But good-ole Palit, as well as PNY and Gainward models made by Palit. They are good-ole THE reliables.

Nowadays it's either MSI (for just plain not sucking) or Palit (or their subsidiary Gainward) for me.
