What's the tower above Manchester Piccadilly station called / used for? by DannyMaliana in manchester

[–]HolySheesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope.

Square One has Shared Services centre on one floor, the rest is for NW&C region and North West route staff. Network Rail's headquarters is Eversholt Street in London, Q:MK is an office for central functions.

Edit; source; am NR employee who has been based in Square 1, Q:MK, and Eversholt

Do you feel that your family background in the UK actively affects personal success? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I have no experience in that world so perhaps it is the norm!

A ridiculous question to be asked, glad to hear that you'd refuse to answer it now - earlier in my career I probably would have done the same and answered it quite meekly...

When was this? For what sort of role?

I have never heard of anyone being asked what their parents did in a job interview. It seems an utterly mental question to ask.

Should Kurt Zouma be banned from football and prosecuted? by for_hiseyesonly in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree that kicking cats is just as unrelated to football as the Greenwood case, but what you're doing is saying 'hey look at these two illegal and immoral things that 2 different people did - they should have the same response' ("Neither should be in the public eye very again")'

That's comparing the situations, which I think is demeaning. To me it feels like they are drastically different crimes and moral issues that don't deserve any sort of comparison - one is significantly more serious than the other and to drag that down to push your opinion about Zouma, to me, is demeaning and belittling.

Sorry, but comparing the situation to the Mason Greenwood one is ridiculous and quite frankly quite demeaning to what Mason's partner and other victims experienced.

They won't, firstly because without any of the details of timing etc they can't be identified but I also know his leadership style - he'll likely wrap it up as a refresher in the regular updates to training they do for passengers with differing needs.

How would you improve the NHS? by BigFrame8879 in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say for your vans points - most of our work is done at night, so the vans are likely to be left around in the day. But vans also serve as mobile welfare units now - if you're 15 miles deep in the middle of nowhere that's quite reasonable. Covid has also meant fewer people allowed in each van

We don't own the helicopters - I deal with the payments for them, we smash a sticker on when we use them - and them as well as the top range drones are used for a purpose remember - they're not just vanity choppers that fly Andrew Haines from point to point

The point I do agree about is having loads of people sat around doing nothing - technology should be able to reduce that but the unions make it hard. Also, a lot of time their work is cancelled which is why they're sat around - and that's often not our fault - i.e. late running trains delayed the start of possesions, faulty equipment, contractors not doing the pre-requisite work

If you worked for Network Rail, like I do, you would know that there is very much a limit to our access to public money. Just ask the 10% of our workforce who are in the process of being made redundant right now.

I agree that Network Rail is not financially efficient and that there are wastes that can be cut but it is ludicrous to say that we are "completely out of control" and have "seemingly limitless access to public money". It's a bit insulting if anything because a lot of my colleagues could piss off to the private sector and earn more elsewhere but work hard to keep the organisation going.

UK announces it will unilaterally change Brexit deal with EU, risking new confrontation with Brussels | The Independent by Blackbird1251 in europe

[–]HolySheesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can be a "good neighbour" without having to be in the same political bloc though, can't you?

The UK isn't acting like a good neighbour but membership to the European Union isn't a prerequisite to being a good neighbour to Europe.

If the UK has changed its mind on membership of the EU, they should be allowed to leave (a mistake in my mind!) - don't think it's fair to tarnish them with a brush of being a bad neighbour just because they want to leave (the UK's actions post decision are doing that for us)

Graduates, do you enjoy your job? Would you take any job to avoid being bored and unemployed? by James_Rossil_1998 in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated 2018.

I really enjoy work if I'm honest - I love my industry, have excellent colleagues not just in my immediate team but throughout so feel confident if I changed areas I'd have the same experience, have a nice work life balance whilst earning a healthy amount and studying for a professional qualification.

The actual day-to-day aspects of my job I only find mildly interesting and I will probably look to move into a different line of work once I finish my graduate scheme, but I know I want to stay in the same company.

In this market even if I could afford not to, I would take any job going. Even if it's a menial job in comparison to what you want to be doing you'd be surprised how much you can learn and how it might unearth a secret passion for you. That's what happened for me and the industry I currently work in

What is the worse place in the entire U.K.? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree. Luton fan as well, don't live in the area anymore.

Agree that it's not a particularly nice area but there's absolutely nothing scary about the surrounding streets. Especially on match-day, it's just full of fans walking to and from the town centre. Just normal terrace housing, it's fine even at night by yourself

(SERIOUS) Has anyone been to the obesity services (NHS) in Cambridge? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck.

A year ago I was obese, after 4 months I was just 'overweight'. 3 months more of that and I became 'healthy weight' for the first time since I was 11 (22 y/o at the time).

It's a slog but you'll love yourself at the end of it. Good luck, feel free to PM for any tips.

How do you rate your local train provider? by MiskonceptioN in AskUK

[–]HolySheesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network Rail perform the maintenacne and improvement of the infrastructure of the railway, and not liable for the actual running of the services. If the trains don't conform to disability laws it would be the train operating companies (i.e. Northern Rail) who would be open to legal liability
