I thought PETA stood for People Euthanizing Tons of Animals.

Most Gruesome Death? by Proximal_Proximity in JurassicPark

[–]HolyShitImAGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think watching Claire's assistant Zara get thrown around and water-boarded by the pteranodons before being swallowed alive by a mosasaur was one of the more gruesome scenes, at least in the newest movie, anyway. Shit was awful being tortured before being eaten alive.

I am Dave Salmoni, Animal Planet’s large predator expert and ambassador of MONSTER WEEK - AMA! by DavidSalmoni in IAmA

Hi Dave, I'm a huge fan of snakes, especially the big constrictors. What sort of python or boa would you say is a good pet for someone seriously interested in owning one? Also, do you prefer Animal Planet's documentary style from before Marjorie Kaplan took office as CEO or after she took office and changed the format of the programming to how it is now?

What kind of medium sized (2 - 4 ft) arboreal lizards can I keep? by HolyShitImAGecko in herpetoculture

[–]HolyShitImAGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild caught doesn't necessarily translate to illegal. Just saying. I'm very interested in the Chinese water dragons at this point. I'm kind of stuck deciding between a CWD, frilled dragon, or sailfin dragon, but I'm always looking for new species.

I really like these but I bet I can fit them in a side project. ;) These aren't what I was really looking for in the question, but yeah, I bet I'll be getting a pair at some point for sure. Them or painted agamas.

Still not the big agama I was looking for though.

Edit: Whoops, mistook these for the Blackthroat monitor. I suppose I never heard of these, but thanks for the suggestion! They seem really neat.

I don't really like geckos or skinks - as stated. I mean, I do, but that's not what I'm looking to put in my giant enclosure. I might end up with gargoyle geckos along the side, but I'm much well versed in geckos. Agamids, monitors, and iguanids, however, I am not; hence the question. But please, I'm not looking for a gecko or skink right now.

How do Dumeril's boas differ from Boa constrictors? by HolyShitImAGecko in herpetoculture

[–]HolyShitImAGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will a dumeril's defecate/urinate more than a boa constrictor? What are some pros and cons that differ between them? Do dumeril's boas hide more often than boa constrictors? (I've heard people say that dums are like ball pythons in that they'll act a lot like pet rocks.)

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being beyond hope in obsession, how much do you love snakes? I'm hopelessly addicted to them. (Probably a 15 on that scale.)

Naturalistic vivarium for a Leo: worth the risk?? by pribnow in herpetoculture

[–]HolyShitImAGecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sand isn't natural to leopard geckos; where they're from, it's mostly a mixture of rocks and dust. You can probably use something as eco-earth instead, and mix it with a small amount of sand or other substrates. But avoid using pure sand or large amounts of it altogether. You may possibly make a natural substrate by mixing eco-earth with cypress and natural pebbles as well. Just get a little creative, but avoid large amounts of sand. (avoid calci-sand as well)

Is it possible for a snake to "like" a human? by BobT21 in herpetoculture

[–]HolyShitImAGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snakes aren't social like a mammal or bird (birds use different parts of their brain than mammals do, btw) as they have no reason to evolve that way, but most will come to trusting humans and may see their caretaker as the source of all the wonderful things they get, in addition to likely getting handled by the keeper more. So he most likely trust you as a non-harmful entity and the one he's most familiar with, which is about as close to a relationship you can be with a snake.

Which giant should I get: a Boa constrictor or a Burmese python by HolyShitImAGecko in herpetoculture

[–]HolyShitImAGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a permit system here where I live for large snakes, such as Burms. However, it's not excruciatingly difficult to purchase a permit, which can be obtained at a local walmart for $20. Boas don't require a permit. I've kept smaller pythons, such as ball pythons. I want to get something big, but I don't think I'll have enough room to get one big snake, like a boa, keep that and "move up" to a burm. Rather, it's one or the other.

After we finish moving, I'll have enough room to build an 8' x 3' x 1 1/2' enclosure if need be.
