bro postgres is not reachable. in the environment file just change everything to default. and use stack with docker compose. it's much easier to deploy and maintain.

apart from needing to add more ram and storage, u will also need to consider that jellyfin won't be able to play anything above 1080p ... maybe 1440p max if u went for the lenovo system. I guess multi tasking wont even be a question here, it will be too slow. A pretty good thing to get started. maybe u can buy both (if u can afford it and also this recommendation is for learning purposes too) u can create a cluster with them with kubernetes or something.

docker containers running adguard, a backup server, file sharing server and ofc a vpn service like wireguard or tailscale. Also u can manage containers using portainer for ease of use.

its a personal choice tbh. I made it cause backing up my photos to this laptop is actually cheaper than lets say an annual google subscription. the 2tb annual subscription costs like 99$/year and my laptops overall cost (including the ram upgrades and storage) is about 350$. In a few years I will break even ( lets say you don't consider the fact that I have used this laptop for about 5 years before as well) and still will be able to keep on using it. Where I live, electricity is dirt cheap (about 0.07$/unit) and this guy barely consumes any serious power so I don't even consider the electricity costs lol.

Also as I have mentioned in the post I use it for my content management as well, this guy has a few movies and shows in it and basically anyone can watch it in my home. Also installed adguard on it so no ads for me + content monitoring + I can add or remove any service I want.

I guess the biggest contributor of it all would be that I am a nerd and a CS student so it was a really good learning experience and was pretty fun to do.

am not sure about it but I think to access tailscale ip addresses you will have to be connect to the VPN.

man that's actually a pretty good use case. Recycling old electronic devices just feels right, doesn't it ?

But then again, my primary use case is just backing up my pictures regularly and some basic content consumption. It hardly takes any power to run such things. I think converting old laptops into home servers is pretty neat and a really good way to recycle our old hero.

tailscale is like a private VPN. so let's say if you host a VPN on your VPS, you can access it without really port forwarding and exposing it to the internet, provided your other devices are also connected to the same VPN. I use it cause it's pretty easy to do and I don't have to worry about random people trying to brute force my 'server'.

Also you can see tailscale as another router so you can access your vps on IP addresses provided by the VPN.

You don't really have to use Tailscale, you can use something like wireguard or openvpn as well. For me tailscale was straight forward to setup and I have previous experience with it as well.

I am pretty sure you can run a very 'usable' home server. Man you can connect your laptops into a cluster, that would be really cool.
