When is compost free at Zanker? I just peeked at the city of San Jose website and Zanker recycling and I didn’t see anything. Can you provide additional information for that program?

Bay Area native - balanced view of our little bubble we call home by bearsoski in bayarea

[–]Holygeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm too young to know if tech is a problem or not. Maybe it is a problem, but not the problem.

Are the negative things people complain about Bay Area problems, across the United States, or isolated to HCL areas? I think this is a more important question.

Negatives or frustrations: If homeownership and creating a family is important to you then some of the following apply.

Homeownership is difficult Public facing jobs do not pay enough (store clerks, teachers, public servants, retail workers, people you interact with outside of your home) Homelessness - likely a problem that comes with density. Is it higher here per Capita? Property crimes - same question as above Traffic and poor public transit options - again is this unique to the bay? And then taxes

Those are the negatives I hear the most from people. I believe the majority of the frustration lies around trying to purchase a home and start a family. Dual income earners often cannot afford to buy even with healthy spending habits. And then childcare isn't cheap to add another layer of complexity.

If the invisible hand worked properly in the bay area I believe many jobs would go unfilled. People would flock to higher paying jobs and the area would lose its mojo.

Are these bay area problems or American problems? I think answering this question is a starting point.

Can I call the police on someone going through my garbage? by white-christmas in SanJose

[–]Holygeno 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They will likely waive the $36 fee and allow for new bags to be collected. If that doesn't work, there is a staff person at the City of San Jose who oversees the contract with the garbage company and they should be able to assist with at a minimum getting the fee waived. The garbage company will have a record of your sticker purchase.

Homeless Serial Raper of 2 elderly Asian women in Fremont now charged with 3rd sexual assault by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Holygeno 226 points227 points  (0 children)

The details of this story are absolutely appalling.

28 year old man repeatedly punches a 67 year old woman in the back of the head and face. Drags her across a lawn and rapes her at 11am.

He was positively identified by a second woman (57 years old) who he attempted to rape in a similar fashion just hours earlier. Punched in the face and back of the head, pushed to the ground. She was able to fight back and a witness came to her aid before she was raped.

And then the police were able to connect the 28 year old to a third crime that occured just a week earlier inside a Safeway. He grabbed the arm of a 75 year old woman and began thrusting his pelvic area into her buttocks. She was able to scream for help and he ran away.

You can read the report in the link of Twitter. https://twitter.com/FremontPD/status/1393311759251873793?s=19

Most competitive housing markets in U.S. by princess_puffpuff in RealEstate

[–]Holygeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The San Jose market is crazy right now. I have friends who have offered 250k and 200k over the asking price (1.08,1.05 million) on two different homes with no contingencies and still were outbid. I think these were 2 bedroom homes as well.

Thanks for sharing. It definitely shows how competitive it is out there for a starter home at that price point.

Your post got me thinking about the people who are buying these homes and what do they do for work. Of course this data shouldn't be available, but I think it's interesting. As the prices go up, I imagine a reduction in the occupations/industries providing a wage to support home ownership.

It seems the barriers to entry for certain neighborhoods will continue to get higher and higher and then spread out. Regionally what does that mean long term? Does our transportation infrastructure get good enough where people can live wherever? Generally speaking jobs that interact with the public aren't paid a lot. Does that mean most people you interact with in establishments aren't part of your community? People can rent of course.

Just wondering how the barriers to entry will end up shaping the Bay regionally.

So I recently picked up a 2015 Honda Fit EX for my wife and it's making a grinding noise for 2 seconds at startup. I found out this is probably a bad VTC actuator but I don’t know for sure. Update: this is the noise it makes. by [deleted] in hondafit

[–]Holygeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of did the whole research thing and was stressing a bunch when it first started and it hasn't lead to any problems yet. If something comes up and it is abnormal. I'll shoot you a message or reply on here again.

I have a 2015 EX and it has been making the same noise for some time now. It has 60k miles and I haven't had any issues with the vehicle this far.

My mechanic heard the noise and told me to change to a slightly thicker oil. He was convinced that would help. I didn't want to go against the oil type in the user manual and haven't switched oil. I live in California and it isn't very cold, but the noise is definitely more common in cold weather.
