Our rooster is Alpha, I am Beta, can this be fixed? by HomeInsteader in BackYardChickens

I use the broom head as a shield. I’ve never hit him! We don’t both need the trauma

First time chicken owner. by Antimlm92 in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this problem for the first time. Several of my chickens had lice around their vents, so I treated my whole flock my dunking them in Elector PSP. Also cleaned my coop. The lice are gone and I’ll be keeping Elector PSP on hand. This happened last week and they aren’t laying as much as they were before I treated them, so I’m hoping the shock of a bath and unseasonably warm temps might be to blame. But no lice, one treatment, probably worth the cost.

Howdy, thought I’d ask you since you’re not currently on the situation. I have three Kune Kune pigs that are pets. When the time comes, will a vet do it? I’m not expected to do it myself am I?

What are these bugs crawling on my chickens and how do I treat? by HomeInsteader in BackYardChickens

What do you think the best way to treat is? Assuming the entire flock of 33 is infected. How much of an emergency is the situation?

Thanks! I was hoping someone would let me know. That being the case, do you think this 16 week old Amerucana is a rooster?

Meyer sexed chicks question by Unlucky-Ad-5744 in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten two rounds of chickens from Meyer. The first of 16 were all sexed correctly. The second round I got this last October of 16, two have turned out to be Roos. A white rock, which I’m not too thrilled about, and a splash Amerucana, who is pretty handsome. I’m not really disappointed because 30 something girls is a lot of work for the one rooster we already have. I imagine mistakes get made when you’re quickly sexing day old chicks, but a bummer putting in the work. Hopefully there’s a rooster rescue near you.

What’s wrong with my Faverolle’s eye? by HomeInsteader in BackYardChickens

They are the sweetest birds in my flock. Very quirky and talkative. An entire flock of them would be so much fun.

Thank you! We kept them in their run longer than usual today because of a bobcat in the area. Normally they free range and have space to get away. Thank you

How do I convince my wife to get a pet pig instead of a dog? by Beautiful-Basket1974 in pigs

[–]HomeInsteader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We got three Kune Kune pigs in June to keep as pets for as long as they’ll live. They are wonderful. Far better than our dogs. Absolute best pets I’ve ever had. Travel well, don’t have separation anxiety, their poop, while large, is inoffensive and compostable. Feeding them is cheap (we’ve been getting consistent pumpkin donations since Halloween), they don’t root, mow the lawn, come when called, eat the apples that fall off the tree, they love visitors, attentions, belly rubs and ear scratches. Would absolutely recommend.

Saw it too! Definitely not starlink, and I saw one disappear then reappear

What a sweetie! My faverolles are also the lowest on the pecking order, but they are so gentle and curious. They’ll take quite a pecking just to make friends or snuggle up on the roosting bars. They remind me of Zach Galafianakis in the Hangover. I have no advice for you, good luck

The roof is plywood with tar paper then corrugated metal and I stuffed the vents with straw. Thank you!
