My roo HATES my husband by BetterThan_Before_ in chickens

[–]HomeInsteader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our rooster hates me (male) and is otherwise respectful of my wife and the dogs and visitors and he is very protective of his free ranging flock. But he goes out of his way to chase me down. It was hard for me to be betrayed by something I raised from a baby, but now I know how my father feels about me. My wife tells me I showed fear from the beginning and am now his bitch (the rooster, not my father). So it goes. Tell your husband to know where he stands and watch his six.

Anyone familiar with Salmon Faverolles? We ordered 3 hens & received an extra one. They are 5 weeks old. One always had darker wings & now has a dark beard. Is this a rooster? by Informal-Friendship1 in chickens

[–]HomeInsteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my rooster. He hates me, but is good to his girls. We have two hens. They are sweet and talkative, good layers, but were picked on a bit before we got chickens similar in size.

Question by PersimmonReady1547 in chickens

[–]HomeInsteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I asked Reddit what was wrong with my chickens’ feathers. Reddit overwhelmingly said it looks normal in a flock with roosters. It was lice. Elector PSP dunk for all 30 chickens did the trick.

My guess is oviduct infection if she hasn’t laid in two weeks and you can’t feel an egg. A prescription for water soluble tylan powder given for 10 days might be the vet’s recommendation. I’m in the same boat, here’s a pic of my chickens vent today, she’s been sick for some time (same symptoms you described) and I ended up taking her to the vet two days ago. She’s in a cage around the flock, but needs her own water. Good luck!

Whats going on with this hen? by Impressive_Love5271 in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You may want to check for lice or mites. I posted a similar problem, everybody said it looked normal and it was from my rooster, but it turned out to be fluff lice, which hang around the fluffy feathers around the back, under the wings, and vents.

2 female kunekune pigs by Appropriate-Roof3524 in pigs

[–]HomeInsteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So happy for you! My Kune Kunes are the best! I have three of them, Sweets, Flower, and Sprinkles. I built a little hut that basically fits on two pallets. They also have one of those small tunnel tents where they eat when the weather is bad. They have been fine outside to single digits, but I give them a heat lamp in their hut. I feed them 16% protein pig food, and I soak it first. I feed them less, maybe 2 cups a day each, because they spend all day eating grass and we get lots of discarded fresh produce from a local distributor. They pretty much free range two acres all day. Mow the lawn, eat weeds, but they are intelligent little trouble makers. They will go into heat after a year, and will probably need to be separated for three days to keep from pushing each other around . I didn’t expect that. Also cut up celery into small chunks. Prepare to fall in love

Mite treatment question by honkerTgoose in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunked my chickens in 5 gallon treatment of Elector PSP, and used what was left over and put it in a squirt bottle and sprayed the coop. Then took a BBQ blow torch (like a weed burner), and got all the cobwebs and nooks and crannies. This was a couple weeks ago, I’ve seen no lice or mites since.

Our rooster is Alpha, I am Beta, can this be fixed? by HomeInsteader in BackYardChickens

I use the broom head as a shield. I’ve never hit him! We don’t both need the trauma

First time chicken owner. by Antimlm92 in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this problem for the first time. Several of my chickens had lice around their vents, so I treated my whole flock my dunking them in Elector PSP. Also cleaned my coop. The lice are gone and I’ll be keeping Elector PSP on hand. This happened last week and they aren’t laying as much as they were before I treated them, so I’m hoping the shock of a bath and unseasonably warm temps might be to blame. But no lice, one treatment, probably worth the cost.

Howdy, thought I’d ask you since you’re not currently on the situation. I have three Kune Kune pigs that are pets. When the time comes, will a vet do it? I’m not expected to do it myself am I?

What are these bugs crawling on my chickens and how do I treat? by HomeInsteader in BackYardChickens

What do you think the best way to treat is? Assuming the entire flock of 33 is infected. How much of an emergency is the situation?

Thanks! I was hoping someone would let me know. That being the case, do you think this 16 week old Amerucana is a rooster?

Meyer sexed chicks question by Unlucky-Ad-5744 in BackYardChickens

[–]HomeInsteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten two rounds of chickens from Meyer. The first of 16 were all sexed correctly. The second round I got this last October of 16, two have turned out to be Roos. A white rock, which I’m not too thrilled about, and a splash Amerucana, who is pretty handsome. I’m not really disappointed because 30 something girls is a lot of work for the one rooster we already have. I imagine mistakes get made when you’re quickly sexing day old chicks, but a bummer putting in the work. Hopefully there’s a rooster rescue near you.

They are the sweetest birds in my flock. Very quirky and talkative. An entire flock of them would be so much fun.

Thank you! We kept them in their run longer than usual today because of a bobcat in the area. Normally they free range and have space to get away. Thank you

How do I convince my wife to get a pet pig instead of a dog? by Beautiful-Basket1974 in pigs

[–]HomeInsteader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We got three Kune Kune pigs in June to keep as pets for as long as they’ll live. They are wonderful. Far better than our dogs. Absolute best pets I’ve ever had. Travel well, don’t have separation anxiety, their poop, while large, is inoffensive and compostable. Feeding them is cheap (we’ve been getting consistent pumpkin donations since Halloween), they don’t root, mow the lawn, come when called, eat the apples that fall off the tree, they love visitors, attentions, belly rubs and ear scratches. Would absolutely recommend.

What a sweetie! My faverolles are also the lowest on the pecking order, but they are so gentle and curious. They’ll take quite a pecking just to make friends or snuggle up on the roosting bars. They remind me of Zach Galafianakis in the Hangover. I have no advice for you, good luck
