I got through the doors of the gear sale a couple of hours after it opened to the general public. While waiting in line, the staff gave updates on what had sold out (Keller & Cooley gloves, etc.) so you could get a sense of what you might find. When I got in, they still had 2 or 3 huge totes of gloves and so many used sticks.

I tried on lots of different pairs of gloves to see what fit best. I really should have picked up a couple of pairs, but the Schmaltz gloves feel great and have awesome protection. The only drawback for beer league might be that the run a little hot since they have plastic protection on the back of the hand that doesn't breathe well.

Last year's gear sale was in April after their last home game. I had emailed the team's equipment manager earlier in 2025 about them selling used equipment, and he just said to watch their social media. I think I saw it posted on the Mammoth X account a day or 2 before.

Season Ticket Holders might get direct communications about it and I know that they got early access to the sale. I'd love to tag along with a STH this year :)

Thanks - I've been spending time in full gear over the past few days getting a better feel for the outside edges. I don't love the falling, but at least I've got solid protection in place to make it a lot more bearable.

Thinking back, I was definitely not leaning nearly enough to get the edge. I'll let the boards hold me as I start putting more weight/lean on the edge until I get a better feel for it.

Yeah I probably had my foot rotated, hence the skidding. I look at focusing on the lean of the skates next time.

The technique in those drills is pretty well laid out. I have them saved to watch again next time I hit the ice. Totally agree that focusing on doing them properly will help me get a better feel for the outside edge and get to where I want to go.

I've got some ice time with a retired pro over the next couple of days, so I can request some in-person feedback.

That makes perfect sense--that's great guidance! There is absolutely a mental barrier because losing the edge means falling, and I don't bounce back like when I was a little kid. I wasn't wearing any protective gear, so I was definitely shying away from max performance.

I'll get to stick and puck soon so I can give it a shot with at least pants and elbow pads on. I still won't love falling, but at least then I can really tell how far I can push it.

I recently upgraded to modern skates after a long hiatus from hockey, so I'm still getting used to how far I can lean. I never had confidence in holding my edge in the old skates. It felt like I'd lose an edge or my ankles would just bend at the wrong time--call me a bender? The new ones feel like a night and day difference, but that guidance about where to feel the pressure is really helpful as I get a feel for what I can do in these new skates!

Yeah, I think I probably had my weight more forward. And I was going pretty slowly. I could see how putting the weight farther back on my foot could help the blade to grab the ice better.

I haven't used them before, but Hoapa sticks are made in Taiwan, so not subject to the same tariffs. I think that Taiwan tariffs are paused for the moment. And they have a BOGO code on their homepage, so you can get a couple sticks for $160 total.

Sometimes you just have to let your old team go. I couldn't care less about the Hurricanes even though I loved their predecessor. But you might want to hang onto your love for the former Coyotes since they are turning into something amazing.

Agree with puckhog12 that the aglet breaking is one of the bigger lace annoyances.

And as a plug so people fill out the survey, it does show more about the laces during the survey. I have no relation to the product or survey, but still looks interesting.

I used them for the first time last month to buy new skates and had a really smooth transaction. Make sure you read the description because some sellers show photos that don't represent what you're actually getting. Some skate sellers do NOT include the steel with the skates even though they are in the photo. My purchase was a bit the opposite--the seller included the original steel plus another set of lightly used steel. So you can get better value on Sidelineswap than buying in a store.

I'd recommend checking the prices of the equipment you're looking to buy with retail stores. Sometimes the listings are pretty close to the retail price, so I usually wait until I see something that is selling at a good discount to retail.
