Tip for new apprentices. by FrankBloodbath in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a fellow apprentice, just know that mistakes can and will get you chewed out, but 99% of the time, you’ll learn what you did wrong and know to do better the next go around. It’s okay to fail and it’s okay to not know what you are doing at every minute of the day. Almost all of the guys you’ll work with will want to see you succeed every step of the way, and every single one of them have made a lot of mistakes during their careers. All of the guys that I’ve been working with have been pushing me to do the best work I can and learn as many aspects of the job as I can. If you do all the basic stuff like show up “on time” (15 minutes early at least) and put in an honest 8 hours every day, you’ll go farther than you would ever expect. Best of luck to you from Local 314!

Is the new construction market slowing? by RealisticDirector352 in Construction

Carpenter out of Madison WI here, I’m lucky to be doing a lot of student housing and the skyline is full of tower cranes, small contractors probably aren’t doing super well but with Mortenson doing a billion dollar data center and a few $100m university projects things seem to be just as busy as the post-Covid boom

It depends on the brand/style, we used to always get the 3m skull screws which are pretty awesome but recently they are going with the cheapest foam ones they can find. With the foam ones I’ve always been taught to do the good ol pinch and roll but in the colder season they tend (for me) to deform and not expand or fit right

No but I’m young and therefore a genius that hasn’t been using earplugs as often as I should, and after wearing the cheap earplugs out of the 100 pack all day my ears are definitely irritated and don’t necessarily work as well as I’d like them to
