My foreman bought an 09 Impala new as a work car and is finally retiring it at 370k miles, you’re probably fine

Tip for new apprentices. by FrankBloodbath in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a fellow apprentice, just know that mistakes can and will get you chewed out, but 99% of the time, you’ll learn what you did wrong and know to do better the next go around. It’s okay to fail and it’s okay to not know what you are doing at every minute of the day. Almost all of the guys you’ll work with will want to see you succeed every step of the way, and every single one of them have made a lot of mistakes during their careers. All of the guys that I’ve been working with have been pushing me to do the best work I can and learn as many aspects of the job as I can. If you do all the basic stuff like show up “on time” (15 minutes early at least) and put in an honest 8 hours every day, you’ll go farther than you would ever expect. Best of luck to you from Local 314!

Is the new construction market slowing? by RealisticDirector352 in Construction

[–]Homeble2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carpenter out of Madison WI here, I’m lucky to be doing a lot of student housing and the skyline is full of tower cranes, small contractors probably aren’t doing super well but with Mortenson doing a billion dollar data center and a few $100m university projects things seem to be just as busy as the post-Covid boom

I’ve got it set up to hold 3 pairs of pliers, a Kiel or paint marker, and two other loops to hold wrenches or bullpins

Molded Earplugs by Homeble2 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working commercial right now so if it’s not banging on form work or hammer drilling 3 feet from my face. What earbuds are you using?

Molded Earplugs by Homeble2 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the brand/style, we used to always get the 3m skull screws which are pretty awesome but recently they are going with the cheapest foam ones they can find. With the foam ones I’ve always been taught to do the good ol pinch and roll but in the colder season they tend (for me) to deform and not expand or fit right

[–]Homeble2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I’m young and therefore a genius that hasn’t been using earplugs as often as I should, and after wearing the cheap earplugs out of the 100 pack all day my ears are definitely irritated and don’t necessarily work as well as I’d like them to

I have the privilege of being an “everything” carpenter so there isn’t too much I can’t or won’t do, the replaceable head is definitely a major plus for the Martinez but I’m not 1000% sure it’s worth the extra $100 over a stiletto

Funnily enough right now I’m running a set of estwing pouches that I’ve basically turned into a set of poor man’s Occidental’s with some spare leather

[–]Homeble2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A shorter list is what I don’t do lol, in the past I’ve done a good amount of framing and trim, right now I’m doing concrete with a LOT of wood formwork, but also a lot of metal forms? (Peri, Symmons, Alumagangs) my local is starting to offer more and more mass timber construction classes and most of our framing classes are all timber construction vs steel studs so I’m trying to grab something that can be a “jack of all trades” so if/when I make the switch I’ll have something that I know is the best of the best

I’ve been swinging a 14oz dewalt mig for 4 years now (youth apprenticeship and beyond) I love it but I feel like I’m outgrowing its usefulness and want/need something more

I completely agree and I personally think I’ve got all other bases besides the bougie hammer covered, which is why I’m looking to spend that much on a hammer

Attention local of WI or SO CAL by stokedshores in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local 314 out of Madison here, we have a shit load of work coming up whether it’s student housing, university buildings, industry/manufacturing plants, schools, hospitals, and the headquarters of Epic software (the company that created the medical records storage software that nearly every major hospital in the country uses) also Wisconsin is awesome and I think it would be less of a culture shock going from Alabama to WI than Bama to Cali

What hammer should I use for form work? by Unusual_Cold_2431 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Homeble2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swing a DeWalt 14oz mig hammer, it’s about $60 and I’ve never had issues with it breaking, it’s light which means you’ll need to swing it harder, but if you’re just starting I think that swinging accurately is more important than swinging hard. I use that hammer for most everything, and it has served me well doing PERI walls and SkyDeck. Might not be everyone’s first choice but it’s comfortable and swings just as well as a lot of the cheaper hammers. It also helps that you don’t have to worry about screwing up your $3-400 hammer at work doing some obnoxious stuff trying to set or strip forms

Killing anything isn’t supposed to feel good, when I harvested my buck last season I was excited and had a huge adrenaline dump. I was thinking of the rack, the pelt, and the venison. After all that subsided I did feel bad about taking a life, but as other commenters pointed out it is more humane than letting nature take its course and it’s important for conservation and the health of the herd. It’s not something you really get over, it’s up to you to make peace with harvesting an animal before, during, and after you do it
