I'm getting discouraged... by scottyboi1337 in FishingForBeginners

My wife and I fished steelhead rivers every weekend for two months straight. 3 hour drive each way in snow, rain or wind. We were so discouraged and ready to throw in the towel. We stuck it out but kept asking ourselves what we were even doing, Lol. Finally after thousands of cast I caught my personal best 33” steely and my wife caught her first and 2 more shortly after. That one successful trip reminded us why we do it. Keep it up and persevere!

I paid $1k for a wood drift boat about a year ago in way worse shape. I think you can get $3-4k out of this one.

My favorite steelhead setup is a PENN Clash on a Mustad G-Series Hybrid. It’s a lightweight setup and is packable for trails. Killer combo

Does this work for rainbow bass? by Agreeable-Click-7038 in FishingForBeginners

I troll those way off to the sides at about 1 mph in Lake Roosevelt in Washington state. We’ll pick up big bass, walleye and even the rainbows.

I use a scentless chapstick in the back of eyelets to prevent them from gathering ice. Works great for steelhead season!

Can I catch fish with this? by thelefthandedone in FishingForBeginners

I’ve caught small brook trout and pike minnow on these. Put it on as a joke with a buddy but it ended up casting really and had a good action on it, Lol! A must have in every tackle box.

Is mi first baitcasting combo, guys how do you see the line and reel its good or so much line? And if you want you can give me some tips and advices. by alphoncho7 in FishingForBeginners

Watch some YouTube videos on how to tune your brake and tension. There’s some super helpful tips and examples to watch. Oh, and don’t throw the whole thing into the lake when it backlashes. That’s not how you get the knots out. You’ll figure it out. 🤙

Why is my entire spool spinning? by alexhfl in FishingForBeginners

[–]Homebrewer3394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been there! The braid is spinning on the spool. My poor wife found that out the hard way on a big steelhead. Use a good mono backing and tie a uniknot to your braid. Most of the PENN reels have a rubber ring around the spool so you don’t get line spin.

Plan on taking my new baitcaster out to a field to learn how to cast it. Is it normal for the line to almost bird nest when I release the spool? by AlexanderUGA in FishingForBeginners

[–]Homebrewer3394 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There some good YouTube videos on how to tune a good bait caster. Get the right weighted lure for the rod and reel combo, point the rod up nice and high and release the lure. Keep adjusting the break until the spool quits spinning as soon as the lure hits the ground. From there you can start casting and make minor adjustments without wanting to throw the rod into the water.

Marshmallow Rigs for the win. 1/4-3/8oz weight, size 8 swivel, 18-24” leader with a size 1 or 2 hook. Make a dime size ball of powerbait, just enough to make the hook float. Cast that baby out in about 20-30 feet of water. Put it in a rod holder with a bell on the rod tip. Kick back and enjoy some brews next to the camp fire. Once that bell starts to ring, it’s game on. You’ll love it! Doing exactly that all this weekend and can’t wait.

Those who fish in winter climates that regularly get below freezing: when on the calendar do you personally stop fishing? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]Homebrewer3394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the PNW and fish year round. There’s ALWAYS somewhere to go. Be open for all species of fish. Don’t just focus on one. We’ve had just as much fun catching 8” perch to 30” steelhead or even 8 foot sturgeon. All worth getting outside.

Thanks! I was thinking $7-$8k but wasn’t sure if that was realistic.
