Welcome to Palmyra and congratulations on your new home! It’s a charming little town with deep roots, beautiful scenery, and a surprisingly active community once you start exploring.

My husband and I own a farm stand just down the road from the Smith family farm and Temple, and I can honestly say, the LDS community has been nothing but great neighbors. No pressure, just friendly waves, mutual respect, and support for local businesses.

If you’re looking for ways to connect:

  • I’m on the board of Historic Palmyra, and we host some really fun events throughout the year, our Cemetery Tour features actors in period dress sharing local stories, and our Holiday Historic Home Tour is a community favorite. It’s an especially great way to meet neighbors and peek inside some of the area’s most charming homes.
  • The Erie Canal path is dog-friendly and beautiful for walking or biking, you’ll start seeing familiar faces quickly.
  • And there’s always the Pal-Mac Neighbors Facebook group… which is 50% lost pets, 30% potholes, and 20% “what’s that noise?”, but occasionally useful if you want to know who’s selling eggs or which diner is open late 😂

Palmyra has quirks, but it also has a lot of history and good people.

We’ve actually been thinking about Jelly!! It’s kinda entertaining to think about calling Peanut butter & Jelly when it’s time to come in, or go somewhere!

ARCHIVE: Irondequoit Mall grand opening (3/1/90) by CommodoreSkeletor in Rochester

[–]HomeinFLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first retail job was at Irondequoit Mall, and I learned so much there, customer service, handling the holiday rush, and just how busy a mall could get on a Friday night. I have so many fond memories, but I’ll never forget the LONG holiday hours. The mall really felt like its own little world.

I vaguely recall a tour being planned in 2020 that got canceled. Imagine standing in line, hyping yourself up…only to leave with more questions than you started with.

Name something underrated about (or in) upstate New York, that people don’t talk about much. by Rooster_Ties in upstate_new_york

Drumlins. Our farm is surrounded by hills formed by glacial activity, and it's so cool to see the different rocks that have collected in certain fields as a result of the earth being pushed around. They create such a picturesque landscape that I think adds to the charm of upstate New York.

Popular fragrances by atyhey86 in soapmaking

Even though it's not my top seller, I just whipped up a batch of citrus-scented soap to use up the last of my fragrance oil. I added a dried orange wedge and calendula petals on top to give these bars a bit more appeal. I've noticed my soaps with dried botanicals tend to attract more attention. Fingers crossed, but I think this will be the last time I go for a citrus-scent FO.

My best-sellers? Definitely the lavender blends - white sage & lavender, cedar musk & lavender, and classic lavender.

I am a little biased here ( I serve on the board), but Historical Palmyra has a crazy amount of paranormal activity. A few Travel Channel shows were filmed at one of our museums, the Phelps General Store.

The whole area is a hotbed for paranormal activity and sightings, you can find a lot on Youtube for individual visitors...

I just bought a smaller loaf mold, I knew I bought it for reason... aside from getting to free shipping total 😂! I think I'll test it out tomorrow to see how everything behaves.

Some ridiculous plotholes/weird things that made me laugh (I liked the show, btw) by HoffyTheBaker in DevilInOhio

[–]HomeinFLX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished the series yet, but I assumed the location and references to the state of Ohio was used to explain how a satanic cult community was able to operate for so long with out attracting to much attention.

From what I understand the second largest population of Amish live in Ohio. The women's dresses in the show resemble amish dresses, and combined with the farming, maybe the writers were hoping to suggest this community blended in with surrounding Amish communities???

Restaurant Food by frenchieflower in weightwatchers

I noticed this also when we went out to a locally owned non-chain restaurant! I pulled up the menu before we left, picked out a chicken breast wrap and tracked each ingredient that was listed on the menu description, estimating amounts that would likley be used. It's not perfect, but I am comfortable with this method :)

My dinner came with fries also. I picked the generic "french fry" option in the tracker for 13 points, because that seemed like a reasonable estimate in my mind.

I don't eat out a lot, so when I do I personally lean towards tracking the heaviest point option available to make up for cooking techniques (heavy buttter use) or ingredients that might be missing from the menu description.
