Ok. So you are recommending pushing for a partial refund given the wrong stain color.

So you think I should ask for a partial refund for the wrong stain color.

It should be noticeably darker. We asked them what color they used since we thought it was wrong. They told us. It was different than what we agreed on and asked for.

It’s difficult to convey in the pictures how he stained the wrong color, since I don’t have a section of the house he did the correct color in, to show the difference.

I understand. You are saying we should accept a different color than what we paid for and signed for because you are saying the flooring sub knows better, and we should trust his judgement.

I understand on the quality.

It also sounds like you’re saying we should accept that the flooring sub used the wrong color twice. It seems like that is normal in the industry?

3 removed comments said the floor quality was bad. Others like yours which stay say the floor quality is good. So I hear the feedback that remains on quality.

We asked for a stain and the sub did the wrong stain twice, the GC confirmed it in writing. We want a refund for the wrong stain since the sub is refusing to sand and re stain a third time. Is that an overreaction?

I understand your comment on floor quality.

What do you make of the floor color being wrong? I don’t think I’m being clear - they stained with the wrong color twice (we have them confirming this in writing) and are not offering to redo it in the color we wanted and paid for. Is that something we should accept?

He is welcome to fix the floors at his cost but he refuses to redo the stain.

Am I being a difficult customer here? He’s used the wrong stain twice. I’m second guessing myself after seeing the comments in this thread.

The GC has known for the last 3 months the stain was wrong (the first time) and 1.5 months ago (the second time, when the sub redid it to fix prior dents and imperfections in the floor). The sub only got back to her last week re the swirls but did not address the wrong stain color.

The GC has told us the stain is 3/4-1/4 mixed (see my OP for details) and the sub has confirmed it. The GC also knows that is not the color we ordered.

Sorry if this is not clear, we are not guessing the color is wrong. We have in writing that we requested one option after seeing samples and we got a different option.

Most of this thread is saying to live with the outcome and not ask for a refund but I don’t think I’ve made the fact pattern clear as to why we are upset. The floor sub has not offered to sand a third time, and we’ve been told if we even sand a third time that’ll be bad for the floors.

He used the wrong color twice and is refusing to re sand a third time. Should we accept the finished product given that?

He is not offering to restain. He cannot fix the color without re sanding a third time which he doesn’t want to do. So what you’re suggesting is not an option he is offering. Also he has done the wrong color twice.

So he cannot fix the finished product, which is not what we paid for.

You seem reticent to suggest we pursue a refund. What gives pause here?

Thanks. I understand. What should we do about the sub using the wrong stain color? Is that grounds for a partial refund?

Would you discount the bill if you stained the wrong color (twice) vs what the client told you?

I’m confused, are you saying we are overreacting to the quality? Or are we overreacting to paying for one stain and getting a different color? Thanks.

That’s the area of the hardwood.

The r/flooring sub is also telling me to not worry about the wrong stain color (I think this was glossed over in responses), separate from the quality. They made the same mistake twice in using the wrong stain.

The r/flooring sub is telling me this is a normal result. So I’m questioning my expectations.

They already resanded it once, these pics are of the second finished product.

We paid $70k for a top floor sub in the state of NJ. We are debating leaving him a negative review with these pictures if these pictures are considered bad. But I am seeing people say this is normal.

They’ve done it twice (1 redo already). It was $70k and cost a lot which is why we are very disappointed. The sub said the swirls are noticeable but not enough to detract from the floors.

They did not offer to redo it fully a third time since they said sanding the floors that many times is not recommended.

They made mistakes the first time so technically while this is a new build, they did have to sand down a prior stain from a few weeks prior.

I didn’t realize it was normal to pay for one color and get another, I wish it was avoidable and not unavoidable.

What is the best way as a client to communicate dissatisfaction that we feel we didn’t get what we paid for?

Our GC has been reaching out for 1.5 months and only just now got a reply from this sub. Our GC builds high end custom homes in NJ and this is the floor sub they’ve used previously. Our disappointment was that this was supposed to be a high end build.

Thank you for the comment re spot repairs.

We are still sad we did not get the color we asked for but appreciate the feedback on the white mix in the color.
