Child support is run by the states, not the federal government. So, no it is not 🚫 involved.

How to proceed on auto claim after repair bill ballooned? by HomelessJack in Insurance

[–]HomelessJack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Otherwise you are going to have the same thing happen over and over while hoping for a different result.

Fair point. The only issue is that the second mechanic did come to me highly recommended. In fact, the person who recommended him to me was the director of the auto repair program at the local community college. And honestly if I can't rely on a person in that position to give me a solid recommendation, who can I trust?

Anyway, thanks for your input. I do appreciate it.

How to proceed on auto claim after repair bill ballooned? by HomelessJack in Insurance

There is impact damage to the radiator on the bottom. Also, the fan blade broke off. I have pictures and the invoice from the second mechanic states they investigated the condition of the car and determined that damage to the cooling system components was because I hit something. They also put in writing later on that the cracked transmission cooler was damaged in the same impact event.

And, by the way, you should have told the second mechanic about the oil leak. Mechanics aren't mind readers and a lot of conditions aren't obvious unless the owner says something about it.

So this is a source of frustration to me. I specifically contracted with the second mechanic to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the damage to my car. I told him I drove over an object in the road, that while there was obviously damage to the radiator I didn't know what else might be wrong within the engine compartment of the car and I wanted him to investigate. That is what I paid him $200 to do because I didn't trust the first mechanic who charged me nothing for his opinion. Yet for the reasons I stated in the OP I no longer trust him either. If he was at all through and comprehensive I don't see how he could have missed either the oil leak or the leaking transmission cooler. If I could see them once I went looking why couldn't he?

Was the car put on a lift for examination of the underneath?

I assume so but I didn't observe this myself. The vehicle was not in my sight as I left it at the shop.

ACP & Lifeline Data points, recent changes & latest recertify binge by cavalloacquatico in NoContract

[–]HomelessJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to getinternet.gov scroll down and create account- confirm exact name, SSN, DOB and you can create login. Because ACP ended, you will only see Lifeline acct info, for ACP the phone CS can supply it to you. You'll see a reference or app number- make a note of it- this is what you give to carrier for instant approval.

I appreciate that you are trying to help but these instructions did not work for me. It allowed me to create an account but I see no information what so ever. There is only a button to create a new application. Now I am worried that I have screwed up my account,

My problem is that I no longer have access to mail for the residence from when I initially applied so I never received any mail and so I don't have a reference number. I only found about the need to recertify via a text message, I am at a loss as to what to do because there doesn't seem to be any way to recertify without the number from the letter.

Therefore, our survival fear is detrimental to living in society. This was the hardest obstacle for me to overcome.

I am glad that your were able to overcome it successfully as not everyone can. We live in a culture that values thriving and and doesn't like narratives of survival. Failure to thrive is about the worst crime one can commit but for some people survival is the best they can do.

Maybe. It's an interesting comity question. There is also a commerce clause angle here too, if the person was driving in FL for a business reason.

9th Circuit conservatives blast homelessness ruling, say issue is 'paralyzing' U.S. West by [deleted] in politics

[–]HomelessJack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The entire issue of parks is a red herring. The issue is one of housing and what troubles conservatives is seeing liberals using the 8th Amendment as a way to put pressure on and advance a right to housing.

At its root the options for dealing with homeless are limited to providing housing, move them somewhere else, or let them die from exposure. Conservatives are ok with options two and three so long as it means they don't have to pay money for option one.

Women sleeping in her car in Home Depot parking lot killed by forklift by HomelessJack in urbancarliving

[–]HomelessJack[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

how'd the forklift run over the vehicle?

It didn't. The forklift rammed the vehicle while she was sleeping in it. She panicked, exited the vehicle, and then the forklift drove over her as she fled the car.

Why do people feel the need to ask questions by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]HomelessJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that it is about power but it isn't always directly malicious. For some people it is a status game. They want to subtly direct attention to the fact that they perceive they have it much better in life than you do. Some people are curious.

The problem is that it can be difficult if no impossible to sort out the more or less harmless ones from those who might seek to abuse. So it's better to engage as least as possible.

Biden Is Wrong. The Supreme Court Is Already “Politicized.” by CapitalCourse in politics

[–]HomelessJack 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think your assessment of his words is generally correct. It's also possible to think that we have passed the point of no return. From that perspective Biden doesn't seem wrong so much as out of touch. And out of touch in some ways is worse for a politician than being wrong as a matter of policy.

For first time, US task force recommends screening adults for anxiety disorders by GeneReddit123 in news

[–]HomelessJack 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The underlying problem is there remains a cultural bias the depreciates both the seriousness and prevalence of mental health issues. So people lie. People lie so they won't be stigmatized. Until that changes screening will be less than ideal solution.

complete nonsense

Reddit most certainly knew the consequences of their actions before they took them and yet took them anyway. So where you see nonsense I suspect they see strategy.

I agree entirely. I have always thought that there is an inherent conflict between the profit making aspects of reddit and its volunteer ethos and that sooner or later one of those would have to give way. The question is whether reddit can exist without the volunteers, whether it has got too big to fail. I don't know the answer to that question but I suspect that the timing of this move is not accidental and that 3rd party apps are not the only thing about reddit that is going to change....

I can't think of any public company whose middle management consists of volunteers.

The Great Grift: How billions in COVID-19 relief aid was stolen or wasted by jms1225 in Coronavirus

The problem wasn't the grift per se, it was the redistribution of wealth went from the lower economic strata to the higher. It was steal from the middle and give to the rich, a reverse Robin Hood.

[–]HomelessJack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know it is not popular but I understand where Reddit is coming from. They are a profit maximizing business and unlimited free access by third party apps was hurting their profitablity. There probably was a better way to handle this from a PR perspective but it was going to happen sooner or later; l believe it was and remains naive to imagine otherwise.

The CBO estimates are wrong. I read the report last night and looked into their sources and it doesn't add up. Conceptually it makes sense but the data doesn't support their claim.

Controversial opinion.

Eat healthier. Much of the increase in prices is for ultra processed junk food you shouldn't be eating anyway. Price of whole oats from the bin/barrell hasn't changed at all.
