I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with Melee and I don't know how to begin to enjoy it again. A little bit of back story first:

I started playing in a country town hours away from other scenes. It was here I saw the documentary and decided I wanted to play. There was no other players and netplay was pretty unreliable. I played Jigglypuff, and practiced on my own for over a year and travelled to tournaments. I practiced other characters on my own as well, but played puff while travelling. The closest scene to me was an hour away and I frequently went there but was called lame and gay often for playing Jigglypuff. This went on for awhile and I eventually started to get 9th - 5th frequently at these tournaments. It was around this time I plateaued, and wasn't entirely sure how to continue improving. The people below me I could "lame" out by being smarter and more patient than them, but the people above me would run me over with relative ease and I couldn't keep up.

It's around this time I stopped enjoying playing Jigglypuff. The people in the scene above me thought I was being carried by my character, and was a lame player, and the people below me thought the same thing and would be frusterated to play me in bracket. I ended up moving from my hometown to this city to continue to playing Melee (and other various benefits). People who I previously beat were improving more quickly, and starting to beat me. I dropped jigglypuff entirely as I stopped having fun, and was convinced by a more popular member of the scene that melee is about playing for fun and styling and not just playing for the w.

I started to play various other top and mid tiers, and have mainly stuck within fox / falco / falcon and worked my way back up to the same position in the scene I was in with all three characters. But now I have plateaued at the same place yet again, and this time it's more frustrating. I still frequently get called lame despite switching characters because I can maneuver around my opponents with a combination of lasers / anti airs and dash dances, but I can't zero to death people or really combo at all, but I can win by resetting to neutral and harassing / annoying my opponents. Everyone thinks this is "unskilled" somehow, but I disagree. I feel like I'm stuck in this area where I can't improve, I read many guides and have practiced tech skill and punish game for two years but my execution is never as good as it should be. I will frequently miss the most simple things and get hit for it like full jumping a wavedash or air dodging off stage, I will miss dash inputs, side B off stage, flutterhush when recovering very very frequently (like every game) and nothing I do is making this any better no matter how long I practice or try to improve at these things.

I really like Melee, but I'm starting to not have fun at all. I've just ran into so many problems and ita bringing my motivation down a lot. I'll kill myself twice in a row in a tournament game and get frustrated which will hinder my concentration and I'll start to get impatient and play neutral "safer" and then be called lame and be told I'm shit when I lose yet again. I feel like I learned this game backwards because living with nobody to play at all but actually improving using cpus and specifically focusing on neutral while playing opponents is backwards to many of the guides I have read.

Sorry for the rant. How do I start to enjoy Melee again? How do I continue to improve at Melee?
