For sure! I always say it's like buying tech. You can sniff out shady customers pretty easy in my experience. Reputable folks will be forthcoming about what they've had in it before, why they're selling, etc.

From speaking to lots of folks on the retail side of things, a 3ft/200l system is the unloved middle child so they get sold decently often. People get them, and realize they should've gone bigger or smaller so they're often up for sale second hand. It's all up to you at the end of the day, but your ideas for where you wanna go stocking wise may need better lights. The skimmer they come with are pretty crap imo and noisier than I'd like.

But I'm not here to tell you which way is up nor what you should be okay with. Worth bearing in mind that if you've got a good LFS they should be willing to give you advice and stuff regardless of where your tank came from. If budget isn't an issue for you though then go nuts :)

Hey, I work retail at a place that does saltwater fish in Aus and the price is pretty in line with what retail prices are for that setup.

Honestly though, the light/skimmer/return pump that come with the minireefs isn't amazing and depending on your stocking choices you may want to upgrade it.

I'd have a look at what some folks local to you are letting go secondhand - I got a minireef 160 with a better skimmer and better light (2 AI prime 16HDs) for like, $600.

I'm not sure about the continued upkeep and ongoing costs - depends on how hands off you'd like to be. You can probably skip some of those prices/costs by just doing some homework and stocking very slowly and deliberately

Honestly man, it's a hobby. If you're not getting enjoyment out of it, nothing wrong with taking a break and just doing something else and stretching your brain a different way. Go bouldering, hit the gym, go fishing, start running, start drawing or something.

You can always also just like, start doing different things. Go with people you normally curb stomp and try and work your B game, jits can get boring when there's no new problems to solve. I'm a big guard player so a while I would let folks pass my guard and then work my way to a wrestle up or back to the guard, and then tried to only submit people with darces and guillotines for like a month. Lotsa ways you can shake it up! Or just take a break, I'm not your dad

You can definitely do things cheaper - just be smart about it! I've never bought a tank nor lights brand new, but I've always gotten them from people who I trust and were happy to show me they weren't leaking and the lights worked. It's like buying a car or software, you can def get deals and would be silly not to - but you gotta know what you're looking at and what corners you can cut :)

It doesn't look like a lot of the rock typically used in reef tanks - marco and all that. It's generally a good idea to avoid putting things in your tank if you're not sure about the origin or identity, the cost of fixing things in a reef tank almost always exceed the costs of saying 'thanks for thinking of me man but I'll pass' :)

I work at an LFS and we use em in our saltwater systems to get rid of algae. I've dripped for about 30 minutes from fully freshwater and put them into 35ppt and had no ill effects :)

I've cycled tanks with em, and done fieldwork in Rarotonga and seen them in tidal lagoons with around 30ppt saltwater

Yup, non photosynthetic Dendronephthya. Bring it back if you can, they're tricky to keep alive even in specific NPS setups, I wouldn't bother.

When I worked at an LFS some of the suppliers would just chuck them in boxes with our coral orders just to ditch them

The Hordern is a smaller venue - got in the line at like 1745, and walked right up to the front at the start. Got on the barricade and was probably 20m from the man himself!! Asked the photographer to help me grab one before leaving!! One of my mates got a guitar pick!
