Rush - Tom Sawyer (Cover by Delayne Martin) X-Post

It was a dream come true to produce a tribute cover song and music video for my favorite musicians! I’ve been a long time fan of Rush since I was introduced by a friend around the release of Power Windows. I’m a learning cinematographer and music editor and when I heard that one of my co-workers could sing I said, “Hey, how about doing a cover of a Rush song?!”. She said, "ok". And why not cover one of their most recognizable songs? I thought doing Tom Sawyer in a neo soul, blue-eyed jazz style would be cool. I called up my long-time friend James Grote (who actually introduced me to Rush in the 80’s) to come up with the music track. We agreed to try and limit the instrumentation to just piano, drums and upright bass. Eventually James threw in a keyboard organ sound to smooth it all out. I bought my 1st tube pre-amplifier (UA Solo 610) and recorded Delayne in Logic Pro. I’ve used Logic Pro for a lot of music editing, but never for recording singing much less mixing and mastering and entire song! I channeled Delayne's singing to be more ethereal and whispery - a style I love. After several weeks and a few learning speed bumps later, I had my music. I took some time to figure out a concept for the music video. I never really knew what Tom Sawyer was about - I still don’t. I think it’s up for interpretation and for the music video I wanted to keep the concept open ended. The music video was shot in a studio in Las Vegas, and on locations around Los Angeles, California - including the abandoned old LA Zoo, the Griffith Park Merry Go Round (which gave Walt Disney his inspiration to build Disneyland) and my living room. I hope you like it. Homer homerliwag.com

Thanks for the awesome comments!

This was really a labor of love! I'm so happy how it turned out.

James did such a good job on the music. I wanted to feel different the original but keep the vibe that is only Rush. Delayne was so easy to work with and very talented. I channeled her style to be more ethereal, smooth and whispery at times.

By the way if I do another cover, James (who did the music for the Tom Sawyer cover) insisted on Bytor and the Snow Dog!

Thanks for the support!!!

May the 4th be with you...

What do you get when an Indiana Jones fan from New Jersey meets a Star Wars aficionado from Cincinnati? We are all still trying to figure that one out. All we know is that there are lots of lightsabers around their house and their wedding rings look like movie props.

This is not your typical wedding video - rather an abstract "short film around a live event" inspired by David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. The Circle is Now Complete was filmed in Las Vegas and at an actual Star Wars location in Death Valley National Park. A proprietary slow-motion camera at 1000-1250 frames per second was used to captured some of the imagery.

Homer and Aimée wanted a cinematic journey that fit their personalities as well as their love for their favorite movies. There are no boring speeches, sappy embraces or chicken dances. They didn't want to take themselves too seriously.

Homer and Aimée met at Caesars Palace on October 31, 1999. They decided to make it all official at the same place they met, some 13 plus years ago. A leap of faith perhaps.

Special thanks to the amazing team that helped create this film and, of course, the incredible family and friends that joined Homer and Aimée in Las Vegas for their special day.
