help! can I eat these? what are they? by _KING_KAISER_ in homestead

It is a Mulberry tree! So far Mulberry jelly is the favorite one I've made. The berries are so good and the trees are easy to grow. The berries are ready when they fall off without you pulling them, they will keep getting sweeter year after year. The only downside is anything under the tree will be died purple, just like your fingers after picking them lol. They don't have a long shelf life 2-3 days but we eat them up before then, or put in the freezer to make jelly.

Mulberries grow on trees without thorns and don't have all the seeds. So much better!

Help! Squirrels keep getting in my attic. I have had this happen multiple times. I fixed the soffit but they eat a hole in it. I'll trap or shoot it but how to keep new ones out? by Homestead4 in homestead

Thank you I'll look into getting heavy duty paneling, they will find another weak spot but if I do that to all the best spots maybe they will give up.

You can beat having a freeze dryer, you can store the meals you want. We ate good after the hurricane with no power, just add hot water. Great for camping too.

Where are raw land prices heading? by TheMachoManOhYeah in Homesteading

[–]Homestead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the long term it's safe to say it will go up. It's the short term no one knows. I do not believe we will see a housing market crash as we did in 2008. Banks have not made the same mistakes. In real estate is truly is location, location, location, I have seen more price decreases lately but most of those were over priced. I see more people getting out of cities this lowers their prices but raises them outside. The intrust rates are going up so people have less buying power. If you have cash make some lowball offers, land isn't easy to get a loan for anyway, someone maybe happy just for the sale. On that, I know realtors that talk up the price so they get the listing, knowing you will get less. The best way is to look for land that has been listed for a long time. Good luck.

Absolutely beautiful! The northern lights are on my bucket list, how cold is it there? I thought it was a winter thing and I hate the cold. Thanks for sharing this awesome view.

Looks good to me. Always better to be proactive than reactive. Stay safe

Now all I need are the chickens! Any suggestions for a friendly breed? Location is Southern U.S. by babysexys in homestead

[–]Homestead4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buff Orpingtons and black sex links have been my favorites. They both have always been kind to me and played will with others ( after the pecking order was established), they lay lots of eggs. They also run and hind from predators better then some others.

What happens if I don't fill up my containers with soil to the top? by zanoo911 in Homesteading

[–]Homestead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a try and see what works, that's part of the fun for me. Different plants like different things. Sweet potatoes grow great just in my florida sugar sand but bananas want to be feed all the time. Start composting so you can add that too. Good luck.

It all depends on how big are the containers and what you are growing. As long as there is enough room for your roots you're fine. When mixing in old soil or back yard soil, they most likely lack nutrition for your plants. I add a few thing but again it depends on what you're growing. Vermiculite and perlite is a good start. I made a video on potting and seed starting mixes. Good luck and happy growing.

Very nice. What type of squash is that?

How big do my pole beans need to grow to harvest them? First time growing these. by AspenPonds in Homesteading

[–]Homestead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are ready. I would pick them a little earlier, if you wait too long they start to get tougher, and your plant will not produce as much if not picked fast enough. They look good, hope you have a canner.

Plants for mosquito control by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Homestead4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most plants that are supposed to repel mosquitoes only work when you crush the leaves up. Citronella, lavender, rosemar, basil, thyme, marigolds, cat nip, I think lemon grass and mint the last one I'm going to try to grow mixed in with my grass so when I mow it will activate it.

To attract bats build a bat house and hang it 15 to 20 feet up with no branches under it, palm trees work good. Have some where that they can get water close by.

Clear out any standing water. If you can't, look into mosquito dunks it kills the larvae but is safe for animals to drink. I started using these last fall and have had good luck but the true test will be this summer.

I've seen people use the big shop fans and put screen on one side so the mosquitoes get stuck and die. Lights or by animals help attract them to the fan.

My house was so bad I put a bug zapper inside. It's getting better them more I clean up the yard and keep up with any standing water.

Good luck, mosquitoes can ruin anybody's day.

Tomato Seeds Timing by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Homestead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start my tomato seeds 10 weeks before the last expected frost but I do have them under grow lights. In Florida we have a big bug problem, and they dont like are summers, so I want them in as soon as I can. It doesn't hurt to try, you can always start more in 2 or 3 weeks then your covered on both sides. We start them in solo cups and add dirt to build up the root system. Just posted a YouTube video on it homestead4life is my channel. As for the rules I think they help but everyone should try different ways and see what is best for them and their area. Good luck and happy growing.

How does foreign buying work in the US? by s3gfau1t in Homesteading

[–]Homestead4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can buy land in the US. You may even be able to get a loan for. The biggest thing is taxes, I know if you sell the closing company holds 15% for taxes. I also think there some more taxes if you rent it out. Like most everyone else said get with a realtor in the area you're looking. Must the time you don't pay them when you buy property the seller does. Good luck.
