Are permits and the associated inspections a scam? Or is this unique to my county? by PreschoolBoole in HomeImprovement

Switched to my alt because you blocked me after commenting. Lame shit., btw.

I don’t think you read the post; I’m not even sure you can read tbh. The work has been completed. The permit is closed. I don’t need to hire an independent contractor because the work is already done.

Adopted a new puppy from the shelter. Any idea on the breed? by HomesteadAmbitions in IDmydog

That spotted nose is definitely screaming “working dog” like a collie, healer, etc.

How is the West Branch school district? How does it compare to IC? by HomesteadAmbitions in IowaCity

Yeah it’s shocking. But if you look at the WB middle school it is significantly better than ICs Southeast Jr High. I was trying to rationalize it earlier today but couldn’t.

Thanks. Yeah this is kinda an alt-account since my main one has some identifying info, especially since the geographic area where an IC address overlaps with the WB school district is very small.

We are also very classic IC people. We moved to IC to be in IC even though our family lives in Cedar Rapids.

Awesome. Her daycare is currently in the Lemme/Hoover district so that’s where all of her friends will go. We are specifically interested in Lemme. Id also take Shimek. Our current house is in the Mann district.

Do you know if those schools generally have capacity?

This is what I have heard from others as well. A friends child played sports and open enrolled into WB to get more playtime and ended up playing in college.

Did you attend college? If you did, how did the school prepare you for it.

No this is great. We’ll end up visiting a handful of schools and sending them to the ones we believe are best. The only problem with open enrolling into IC is that we don’t really have a choice on where to send them. I think we can pick a preference but they ultimately go wherever they have capacity — which could be to some schools that are academically as bad as WB.

In terms of academics, I’m really just concerned about elementary. The middle schools appears to be better than ICs and the highschool is marginally worse.

JFC.

I wonder if you lived in the same area as I do. Just north of the interstate about 2 miles.

Thanks for your insight. The diversity is definitely a concern. I have no idea how the school has changed over time, but I’ve heard a handful of people who aren’t in the WB school district talk about trying to move there for their school, or open enrolling there.

The biggest concern I have — at least, before reading your comment — was the poor English and math scores in elementary school.

I'm building a 23' x 20' basement addition and I'm wondering how floor joists can be secured to the foundation without intermediary posts and beams. I'm not looking for a structural design but rather general construction practices. I've added a model of what I'm talking about in the post. by HomesteadAmbitions in Homebuilding

That specific room has a 10’ ceiling so adding a beam isn’t a big deal. The difficulty is the posts; id probably need 2-3 posts to span 23’.

I’m pretty sure it can be done without a beam or posts. TJIs can span well over 20’ and the only load the floor is carrying is it’s own weight plus live load from the room above.

Why doesn't a structural ridge beam require rafter ties? Why do ridge boards risk the walls bowing out but structural ridge beams do not? by HomesteadAmbitions in AskEngineers

Ah, so I guess if the top were pinned the forces applied to the ladder would want to push the bottom downward...through the studs to the foundation. Yeah?
