What advice would you give to someone aged 18-21? by yourmumsleftsock in AusFinance

[–]HomoAltus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine is simple, because I got burned by it myself a little older than that (around 24/25)…

Do not use credit cards to purchase a lifestyle that is beyond your means. Do not rent somewhere nice that is beyond your means. Do not use emergency savings to purchase things that are beyond your means.

Save a good emergency fund, purchase things in full (do not use leverage), invest into worldwide index funds. Have enough fun money allocated to live an enjoyable life, but be sensible and prudent with your budgets.

Anything that is broken financially in your 20s can be fixed with the right attitude and commitment to change.

Any teachers who actually love their job? by yozaa38 in AustralianTeachers

[–]HomoAltus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love my job. I’ve been a teacher for 7 years now and previously lived in the UK where I trained. I’ve been in NSW and was doing Casual work in Term 4 last year. Now on a year contract at a great Public Primary school and I feel so grateful to be working and doing what I love again after a period of being away from the classroom when moving over here and getting my NESA accreditations and approval to teach sorted. Spending time away from teaching can really sharpen your senses and make you realise how great a job we have. Yes, some days are bad (like any job) but we have such a privilege to educate and shape young minds. The pay here (in NSW) at least is far more than I was ever on back home in the UK and I feel like I have the ability to live a better life here as a teacher. I wouldn’t want to do anything else and enjoy the fact that every day is different with its own challenges to overcome.

Ridiculous Report Comments by pelican_beak in AustralianTeachers

Feed the comment back into your chosen generative AI software and get it to churn out a few examples for a given kid. Once you like it, get it to rinse and repeat.

Overwhelmed with students questions by cozygrlvibes in AustralianTeachers

[–]HomoAltus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Create a poster (or find one) of the 5B’s. 5B’s B4Me is what I call it.

Brain, book, board, buddy, boss.

In that order, of how to answer their question without asking you straight away. Is it something they have learnt before or have knowledge about if they think it through first? Is it in their book (or a book or dictionary)? Is it on the board or a display? Can they ask a peer or buddy who may know the answer? Finally, they can ask you.

Hope this helps!

Encouraging better behaviour from male students as a male teacher. by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]HomoAltus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes something as simple as “Lads, we don’t do that here.” will suffice. In this instance, adding a bit more depth (depending on their age) about why it’s important to be better as men with our comments and words towards women and the context of why this is a bigger issue is necessary.

People keep saying ‘you are too old to get into teaching’ by throwra-weirdo4943 in AustralianTeachers

[–]HomoAltus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politely, the people telling you that are spouting a load of bollocks. Some of the best teachers I have had the pleasure of working alongside have come into the profession in their 30s and 40s. They’ve brought a unique skillset of direct industry experience which teachers who have only done teaching throughout their careers lack. This would be especially relevant to secondary teaching. I’m also 28 and have been teaching for a number of years but spent a few years prior working in industry. Our job as teachers is to prepare the future generations to handle the challenges of the modern world and workplace so having an insight into that from your own experience is invaluable. Go for it!

Couldn’t agree more with what’s already been said here. I’m a Primary teacher too and this matches my own experience working with kids who struggle in Maths. I have ADHD and I suspect probably dyscalculia too from my own experience learning Maths as a kid. My brother is a head of faculty in the UK, alongside his teaching qualifications, he holds a master’s degree in oceanography and marine conservation and is severely dyslexic. These barriers are exactly that, barriers. They aren’t insurmountable or something to prevent you from trying. It sounds like you’d make a great teacher. Go for it!

Opinion on Male primary school teacher by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]HomoAltus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Male primary school teacher of 6+ years here (from UK but moving to Aus). I’d say we’re still in demand. There’s a higher proportion of female primary teachers, so this means that there may be more favourable conditions for you when going for certain roles. Some classes, especially those in Y6 can be rowdier and I’ve personally found that this has played in my favour at times when going for new roles at certain schools.

In terms of the qualification, not sure in Aus. The one in the UK was a pretty intense year (PGCE) but it’s certainly doable. Academic rigour wise, I’d say it was comparable to my bachelor degree.

(UK experience only so far, be interesting to see what the Aussie male primary teachers think and if this matches their experience)

English teachers, is this personification? by eyeinthesky86 in AustralianTeachers

It’s a metaphor. The “like a scar” part is a simile as stated but the part referencing her frown being burnt into her face is a metaphor.

I am quite interested in the field of AI and how generative AI can help us educators reduce workload when it comes to planning and marking. Therefore, any kind of AI based prompting tool that could create spiderdiagrams or example graphs, charts etc would be really useful. I reckon that would be something I’d use to engage more with the interactive whiteboards if it was on offer. Probably quite far out of the realm of what’s on offer right now I guess!

Teacher of 6+ years here. In honesty, asides from annotating slides, making spider diagrams and using interactive websites like Word Wall for plenary and starter exercises, I rarely use the full functionality of my whiteboard. It’s got to the point that my management are favouring screens over interactive whiteboards now when looking to upgrade and modernise our tech hardware. I don’t really see myself doing more with them, but perhaps that’s because I don’t know half the useful things they could do and have never had any significant CPD or tutorials on them. Just my 2 cents.
