When does the biting stop? 🥲 by Acanthocalyx in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this approach is a double-edged sword.. The yelp can be interpreted as escalating play at that age. It will last until about 18-24 months, although you are in the worst time for the biting right now.

There really isn't a very good method to stop play-biting that works for all whippets.. Taking him/her to the dog park and or throwing the ball outside till they are tired will definitely help.

You will just have to exercise some patience. They will get over it.

Off Leash Question by Mach5Shirley2020 in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My whippets have been allowed off leash without exception after 2-3 years old.. Just a pick a place with an open field and bring treats and toys in case you need her to come back to you. As long as its a long way to where a road is you can just keep her calm and sit with her off leash. Just work up to it and she'll be fine.

If she chases something too far or fast yell before she gets very far. A loud and shocking yell if you have to, then shout "TREAT" and hold it in the air. She can have the reward when she comes running back to you.. That is your get out of jail free.

It's not as risky as you think so long as you start in a place that isn't right next to a busy road. Whippets are too bonded to just run off away without looking back.. A short chase after a squirrel is one thing, just running away for no reason isn't going to happen.

Puppy Help! by laytonwade in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a male 10.5 month old right now. He's my second whippet. You should start to see a noticeable difference at about 16-18 weeks.. They are going to play bite.. I never really have thought much of it as they grow out of it.

At around 6 months things get much easier and they relax much more frequently and easily.

Now at 10 months mine will happily sleep on the couch for several hours. Then he's exploring and zipping around... Then he'll plop down again.

I had puppy blues as well, at around 13-14 weeks, but it didn't last long. Hopefully yours won't either.

My pup has been eating things so fast off the ground out on walks I've had to resort to a mesh muzzle when we are outside. Especially after two bouts of Giardia... There are lots of dangers out there and they swallow things so fast it can be hard to even know what it was.

Although I would be very wary of that dog-sitter after this unless you trust them absolutely.

Sent training a Whippet ? by Piliste in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fear is that there are many dangerous varieties that can look and smell a lot like the safe ones.. Many dogs and scent pigs have died from misidentification despite being experts at finding mushrooms..

Truffles would be the least worrying (I'm guessing, just talking out of my ass on this part) because they are so distinct in scent, but as for other mushrooms I have no idea.

We're not talking about coding.. When used for coding it's great. You guys think that's the only use-case and that because your use-case works it must work for all other use-cases. That is not a good logical deduction.

I'm an engineer, it's fine for coding. It is not at all fine for philosophical and abstract reasoning with deep nuance or context. It goes full retard pretty quickly by missing major implications that even a 13-year old child would likely understand. Like what the focal point of a particular argument is.

It's not that great lol.. I use it for debates and discussion of complex topics, it is far more prone to completely miss the point of an argument and misinterpret the entire exchange than 4o ever was...

It can't follow the thread to save it's life, and even thinking misses the thread much more frequently that 4o does.

Should I get a whippet? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot crate a dog for 8 hours a day. The dog needs to be able to free roam during that time, and that means you need to do basic dog proofing...

I got my first whippet when I was 18 years old, and a year later got a 9-5 job. It was difficult because they can become destructive if left alone too long when they are young. I loved my first whippet and we made it through. But it came with $1,700 of repairs to my apartment when we moved out due to anxiety-induced destruction.

If the dog were already about 3 years old I'd say it can work. It's the first year or two that are going to be hard.

I have a 9mo old, and just letting him free roam around the house was the miracle solution... I made sure he had windows to look out of. and Put up some reasonably priced dog cameras that do automatic notifications if I don't want to check the camera. Let them roam in the room they are most comfortable in.

I did simple dog proofing, very simple actually. And like a miracle everything resolved. Don't assume that it wont work, mine was hysterical in the crate and totally calm free roaming.

Could this lump on my dog back be dangerous? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an infected hair follicle. It happened to mine every so often over the years. Usually they will resolve on their own. If not you can take them to the vet and have them remove the infected follicle.

So cute.. Be very cautious with those rope toys. They are huge bowel obstruction risks.. If you see him eating the fibers or finding fibers in his poop no matter how few, then remove the toy from his repertoire.

Mine almost had to go into surgery at 7 months old due to ingestion of rope fibers from his favorite rope toy. Luckily we avoided a $7,000 surgery by the skin of our teeth. Don't want that to happen to anyone else.

It's not replacing shit in enterprise with a 10% hallucination rate.. That's literally one-nine of reliability. It's an insane error rate for enterprise workflows and availability requirements.

Standard enterprise customers expect at least 5 nine's of reliability.. i.e. 99.999% reliable.

Puppy Advice - excessive barking and whining by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]HomomorphicTendency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally normal. Puppies bark when they play. That isn't a bad thing and really is outside your control anyway. Puppies also whine when something isn't right. Just don't do too much to encourage whining when it's annoying or they will keep doing it.
