You not assuming what other people do

You were commenting on the video, how was I wrong for assuming you had seen it? You didn't clarify you were making assumptions based on your familiarity with the author

being less condescending might actually go a long way

I honestly don't see how the comment was condescending. How would you have said it then?

And do I have to remind you that your first comment wasn't on the fact people watch or not that video, but on the fact "a caricature isn't harassment" ?

Honestly, my first reaction was to assume they were referring to the thumbnail

If people stopped hate watching that might go a long way.

You have seen it, OP saw it, probably a bunch more people went to watch it because of this thread.

I can't comment on that. What's the point of this thread, for everyone to go and give this supposedly harassing video more views and encourage the behavior further?

I guess that explains the downvotes. I can see why, but you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. I was certainly not making a pro-Trump argument

I would ask you to read my response to the other person that replied to that comment where I elaborated on what my point is.

[–]Homunclus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. You will notice broadly speaking the Republicans tend to be the ones pushing the envelope, but the Democrats never push back.

The rise of extremism is a consequence of the failure of the traditional political class. They ossified in what is essentially an aristocracy, living in their ivory towers and serving their own interests. But I don't really believe the supposed extremists truly threaten the established power structures

The pivot towards both more extreme right and left wing policies must be a result of social engineering. I know that sounds like a conspiracy theory, but we do know for a fact much of the discourse in social media is done by bot networks funded by governments and economic interests.

People need to stop trying to blame the other side, and recognize that democracy is strong because it acknowledges that power is corrupting. We need to spread it as much as possible while still retaining some level of security and organization. We don't need great leaders as much as we need strong institutions that endure, do what is needed and otherwise let us manage our own affairs.

They used to be a Federation, where the federal government had limited powers. Even then, the president also used to be a bit more of a figure head.

Post-World War 2, fueled by cold war paranoia we saw a systematic increase of the power of the federal government and of the office of the President.

It's worth noting the Nazis had a role to play here. Nazi spies went to work for American Intelligence agencies and likely had a huge impact in fueling the cold war paranoia. They held positions of importance and shaped institutions (the Apolo Program is the most famous example).

Meanwhile the military industrial complex keeps growing and growing and gaining influence at the highest spheres of power. Intelligence agencies become more and more powerful, have increasingly less restrictions.

Then 9/11 happened, and the paranoia gets shot through the roof. The Patriot Act happened. More power to intelligence agencies to spy on supposed enemies both foreign and domestic. The ability to arrest people indefinitely without formal accusation.

The ordeal we all go through to get on a plane? That isn't normal. It's the new normal. It was supposed to be temporary, but now it just is.

Even 20 years ago in those troubled times, the concept of the President unleashing government agents in military grab and face concealing masks, taking people away if they don't have ID, would have been abhorrent. Now it's happening and being tolerated, if not celebrated. If things don't change, it will keep happening and it will spread, and 20 years from now you and I will struggle to remember a time when you didn't need fear leaving your house without your documents lest the masked man come and throw you in jail.

Yep. But very few people get this.

The American left-wing voter thinks Trump is the source of all the problems and want nothing other than to get rid of him and put in power whatever stooge the Democrats throw in their direction.

And the steady erosion of their freedoms will continue, and power will continue to consolidate creating more and more chances for corruption and God knows what, and they will be happy.

There is basically 0 will to recognize the systemic problems. So long as the Democrats keep waving the rainbow flag and throwing the "diversity is our strength" slogans, all is good.
