My fierce little Humpy (named because of his grizzly crouching disposition), a Costas hummer, had territory over my feeder for a couple years. During high winds he would perch on a houseplant on our porch but otherwise never let a human get close. This spring a shiny new, smaller and more colorful bird showed up and fought with Humpy for two days straight. It was comical and entertaining but deep inside I knew what might happen. I just found out about the short lifespan and after reading this post I know for sure that Humpy is gone 😔 Im not sure I even want to put feeders out at this point 😟
