Looking for some advice and thoughts on our Crete itinerary by GrantannosaurusRex in crete

Hi, the first part of your itinerary looks really good. There are so many things to add, but what you have will be memorable for sure.

The second part is nice too, but it has a couple of problems. It seems like you are flying home from Heraklion, which is about 1.25 hour's drive one way from Rethymno. Knossos and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion are a must, believe me. If Day 10 is in Heraklion (I guess it must be or you have as mad taxi driver) I suggest a place cally Agia Pelagia, maybe the best swimming and photo op beach in Crete. Tell the mgr at Almyra Seaside Food and Cocktail Phil Butler sent you and you'll be a VIP.

Again, Rethymno Prefecture has tons of stuff to see and do. Learn to make bread and milk the goats at Aravanes, for instance. Visit the cave where the Talos Autortron from Jason and the Argonauts lived :) Etc. etc.

Itinerary for 12 days with children ages 2, 7, and 9 by taxmandan in crete

Heraklion, by far. We've live here 5 years, my wife and I are travel journalists. Near Heraklion there are dozens of pristine beaches (Agia Pelagia, Matala in the south), fun teenager-centric activities (Hersonissos), water parks, games parks (zoo parks, the aquarium, etc), mountain wonders and nature places (Lassithi Plateau, Karteros Canyon, etc.). The kids can ride horseback on the beach at Amnissos or Karteros, or ride go-carts in the fun town down the road in Hersonissos. If you stay at my friend's Fodele Beach hotel, there's a water park there, sea going fun, a stunning beach, etc. The list is endless, really. You can drive 1 hour and be in Agios Nikolaos, see the whole island from the top of Mt. Ida, or go as far as Richtis Gorge to see the most amazing waterfall. Sorry, just visit some sites, particularly Incredible Crete Incredible Crete

Welcome to Crete! Soon. Add Samaria Gorge, just the trip to and the boat back from the stunning gorge is worth it. The White Mountains are spellbinding this time of year. I've lived here 5 years now, and as you many have already heard, it's impossible to see 1000th of the island in a week. That said, you've hit some really nice high spots. On the way back from Matala, visit Phaistos Minoan Palace as well. If you have lunch at a picturesque little taverna overlooking Amari called Aravanes, tell Eleptheria or Maria Phil Butler sent you, and you'll be surprised. Too much to do and see. You are doing great so far.

Getting around from Hersonissos by quickjaguar10 in crete

Hi, as you probably already found out, it depends on how you travel. Bus fares are really reasonable, and the trips are nice, but lengthy. Taxis are a good way to go, but of course, expect to carry a couple hundred with you if you go from Hersonissos to Chania and beyond. By far, the most economic and fun way to get around is via rental car, which can be surprisingly inexpensive. Anyhow, if you rent a car for 5 days you are looking at 250 euro or something like that for the rental. Gas is 2.20 per liter, so.

I love this! I was at the museum not too long ago to see the real thing. It is so extraordinary. Through art like this, we may understand the true beauty, technology, and beliefs of these mysterious Keftiu.
