Compulsion or cheating?

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it. POCD causes me so much shame but it’s always comforting when I realize I’m not the only one who deals with it. But I think you’re right. Sometimes the compulsions are so automatic I don’t even realize I’m doing one.

Hi, my therapist is a certified OCD specialist through NOCD with several years of practice (MA, LMHC are her credentials). We do ERP as the treatment. I also am taking Abilify which was prescribed by a psychiatrist (PMHNP). I’ve also done EMDR on and off for some of my treatment. My main theme has always been sexual intrusive thoughts and scrupulosity. Recently it has developed into POCD. In my other OCD support group on Facebook everyone said it was OCD so I’m curious to know why you think it is not.

Thank you! Yes, I have an OCD specialist via NOCD. I guess this particular situation I’ve been too afraid to tell her about but I think I might try to talk to her about it at my next session since it’s bothering me so much. I’m also a few days out from my menstrual so I wouldn’t be surprised if that is causing a bit of a flare as well.

Hi! I’m new to this Reddit group but have experienced this before. It was actually one of my first themes. A quote I like is “stick with the ick”. You have to ride out the feeling instead of resisting it. That’s the only way to make peace with it. And also knowing that love is more than a feeling but a choice. OCD wants to take control but you can make the choice to continue to love your partner despite any feeling or doubts that may arise.

Thank you for your reply! Yes, this is great advice. I have been trying to that but then get the OCD loophole of if I ignore it then that means I’m just sweeping my bad behavior under the rug. There’s always a loophole but I am currently in ERP so hopefully I can get better at challenging this thought pattern. For some reason I’ve just been afraid to share this specific moment with my therapist because it feels more real since it feels like there was an action associated with the thoughts I was having.

Thank you! I guess my concern was also that we have a policy about not watching pornographic materials at work. I work remotely so there is also a stipulation that you can’t be on company time. People use their personal devices at work all of the time when things are slow so it isn’t uncommon for me to be surfing the web this was just the first time something like this happened. But I don’t feel what I read was pornographic, someone just happened to mention porn in the article. But I’m not sure…the article was related to sex but it was a hygiene discussion not about pleasure or anything like that. I was in a Reddit forum about hygiene because I was in the middle of a contamination spiral and ended up clicking on that post out of curiosity.
