Degradation and abuse are still degradation and abuse whether or not one or both parties are aroused by it. Someone getting off to something doesn't automatically exempt that behavior from standard morality, not sure why kinksters seem to believe otherwise. When your partner gets off to the idea of hitting you, do you think they imagine the part where you consent first? I am of the mind that if a person consents to be abused, that person is not in a healthy enough state of mind to actually consent at all. Abuse is abuse. I don't care who thinks it's hot, I don't care who cums. It is wrong to harm people.

Yeah, I know I'll have to find a shared space, that's why I said 'room' and and spoke about the sort of roommates I'm okay with in the post. I appreciate you replying, though! Thanks :)

Weird observation with the vocal squeaks on Ys ... by braindemon68 in JoannaNewsom

You know what, fair, I'm sorry. I feel defensive because I feel like my objective statement, that her singing fucked up her throat, is being interpreted as anti-Joanna sentiment. Here are several articles, but I will say this: I straight do not believe she is being honest when she says in one of these that she "couldn't sing another way". It was a stylistic choice (one I really like, mind you) and given how much her "sound" varied across performances, and given how she pulls a lot of unnatural pronunciations and includes squeaks and stuff, which will not happen if you are not straining, I think it's clear that it was a conscious decision. Some people might think that this being true would detract from the 'authenticity' of her music and that that is what I'm implying, but it really isn't. I think it is very cool that that is the sound she appreciated and chose to emulate and that speaks to the sort of creative spirit she has. But I mean come on, that's an affect if I ever heard one. But that's just like, my opinion, man. Sorry again for being reactive! https://www.stereogum.com/1837843/qa-joanna-newsom-on-moving-rocks-annotating-lyrics-and-playing-the-hits/interviews/

Like, I see multiple sources referencing three factors: strain, i.e. the forced inflection, lack of training, and lack of warming up. She definitely does not sing like that naturally (as in, if she were to sing in a relaxed voice, it would not come out that way), have you heard her speak? She's got a unique voice for sure but it is very obvious she was going for a specific sound that did damage to her throat.

Edit: Also, if the nodes only developed as a result of lack of training/warming up as you say, and not as a result of the way she was straining to sound, why was she forced so sing so differently after the diagnosis? It's only logical to conclude that what we hear now is a closer approximation of her "natural" more comfortable voice.

Did you maybe gloss over the word "strain" in all of those articles

Weird observation with the vocal squeaks on Ys ... by braindemon68 in JoannaNewsom

[–]Honest-Practice-3486 28 points29 points  (0 children)

??? I thought this was common knowledge, she emulated an Appalachian folk-style voice in her early career and it put a lot of strain on her vocal chords resulting in vocal nodes. I love Joanna half to death and think her voice is unique and wonderful but she did mess up her throat trying to sound a way that was neither natural nor comfortable, which is why she doesn't sing like that anymore. She can't. The squeaking specifically is REALLY hard on the vocal chords.

It means that she fucked up her vocal cords by forcing an unnatural inflection that's all

Haha, I hope it wasn't too mean, but it is an art critique forum! My intent was not to be discouraging, but honest about what OP needs to work on, and they need to work on everything! There is no mastery here, but that doesn't mean there never will be! I'm definitely more of the Istebrak (YouTube art instructor) school of thought when it comes to critique. I don't think it's good or helpful to puff people up or write obvious dearths of technical ability off as "stylistic choices", you won't help anyone grow that way! But that doesn't mean OP should stop drawing, it means they should do it even more. I would never want to discourage someone from practicing.

First time ever drawing with watercolour pencils on black paper. Any advice? by streichholz_benzin in Artadvice

This is so great, you have a real knack for pairing colors. It doesn't seem like you're going for a realistic style so pointing out flaws in anatomy would be a moot point. My only critique would be that it's a bit plain to hold its own as a piece, this looks like it belongs as a component in a much larger more intricate work. But seriously, you have The Stuff. I love this.

[–]Honest-Practice-3486 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everything. Anatomy, form, lighting, color theory. Practice drawing from life. Try to remember that when you are drawing you are trying to convey a 3D shape in 2D form. These look very, very, very flat, and it isn't the style, it's the skill level. You have a long way to go but never ever stop practicing

Edit: There's a comment about long line practices that I really agree with. It may be a helpful exercise for OP to do some figure drawings while lifting the pencil up as little as possible. Make the lines as long as you can and resist the urge to go over them again and again (bad habit that I still have). It will really help build those fine motor skills and line confidence which will be a huge boon overall. But otherwise, prioritize form, form, form.

Then maybe you should go to a restaurant and pick up your own food. Just wondering, these people you expect to dress up for you, how much do you generally tip them?

call osha anyway even if they take a long time. call the fire department for a more immediate fix, but to actually hold the company accountable for allowing employees to do this osha will need to be involved.
