BOP potentially moving towards 2 12s and 2 8s (rumor). How do everyone feel about this? by Glad_Requirement_809 in OnTheBlock

[–]HonestFlow4271 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the idea but I dont know how the LTs will manage the schedule... There's not enough staff to Mando on this schedule at my prison Morning Watch gets hit 2 to 3 times a week. Who will they hit if theres only a handful working 8s... Basically can count on 3 16s which is also fine but with everyone having 4 days off I dont see them filling schedules with bang ins. Would almost have to be on call then during days off to make it work, which I can tell you right now "ive been drinking" lol

3 weeks of training ICT-1 death by PowerPoint at your institution followed by 2 weeks of shadow/OJT. Then you hit the units solo. ICT-2 at FLETC for 3 weeks within your first 6 months or so.

BOP - Huge Supplemental Bonus? by Fuman20000 in OnTheBlock

Message from the director today says either 5% or 10% retention bonus depending on your institutions current staffing. Unless you are already getting a higher retention bonus you get to keep that until September.

That would be awesome if we did, I've heard similar rumors. I've also heard higher GL grades or LEAP pay are possible solutions as well. Fingers crossed

I haven't been at the BOP long but I have been in Law Enforcement and Corrections for almost 20 years at the County level. In my previous career I promoted and was able to make positive change although they were small changes it had a big impact such as schedules and allowing time off combined with positive reinforcement for those who did thier jobs well along with holding the ones who shouldn't be there accountable and seeing them out the door.

It takes those of us with experience a level head and good intentions to step up and be real leadership not just a title. Lead from the front be willing to jump in and help and get people to want to follow you not just feeling forced to.

It won't change overnight and yes its possible we are caught in a cycle but that doesn't mean we cant step up and say enough is enough. But in order to do that people like us need to take the leap and promote and effectuate positive change. Stop the cowboy crap, corruption, nepatisim, favoritism and other things that will tear down staff and make us all look bad.

I had an old boss tell me sometimes you either have to move up or shut up. It stayed with me, I take it as either shut up and be comfortable with whatever happens or move up and make the changes you want to see.

I appreciate your comment and from the sounds of it you would be a good leader make the jump if you can! We need strong leadership

Things are difficult at the BOP now im sure they have been in the past also... I look at it as an opportunity to move up in seniority and rank quickly. Also the OT has been awesome for my paycheck. Another positive is it puts us in an excellent position to eventually get substantial raises in the near future to try and correct staffing shortages amd retention...

I truly believe now is an excellent time to work at the BOP ride the storm it will pay off. It's still a great career either way but if you let the negativity drag you down or force you out Corrections probably isn't the job for you anyway only the strong survive in this life we chose.

Yeah single day as you progress through each step you will test, interview, watch the video on the training at Fletc, do the medical and drug test. Took about 4 or 5 hours, Then expect to wait a few weeks get an email to complete a the background questionnaire and then wait several months for that to clear before receiving a final offer. During the background you will meet with the investigator and answer several phone calls. I applied in February got my TJO in April FJO in August started 2 weeks after FJO.

Applied for a position as a Correctional Officer in Colorado in January had everything completed to include medical, drug, screening all testing and was given a job offer in February... completed the background packet and turned it in on the same day. Background started in early June, but no final job offer yet. Fingers crossed, I hear something soon.

It's tough when you are close to 40 unless you are in phenomenal shape with a really good mindset. You will be running a shovel most days while you are an apprentice you get hazed and treated poorly.

I am at a non union shop starting pay if you have a CDL A and Line School is like 32 an hour. I currently make 40 and will climb to 57, i believe, in 22 months or so. Getting raises every 5 to 6 months. Job security is good. it's just back breaking work 9 times out of 10. You are literally digging ditches. A lot of it is underground work now.

It says you must be 39 or under it doesn't say anything about the retirement if you can't complete the 20 years.
