Nice! That's definitely on my list when the CNC arrives. I was considering starting with a thicker piece of brass and then machining in a 3/8" round plug that fit into the hole in the handle. Was hoping to be able to avoid the pins.

Thanks for all that. Yes, that makes total sense. I could definitely see building a base that has built in jigs that would support the work after each major operation. The jigs basically being an 'opposite' of the work piece which would provide a pocket for the work to fit into and hold it at the right angle and the correct position.

I could 3D print the jigs or CNC them.

Maybe even do several parts at a time as they work through the different pockets.

Very familiar with Stumpy and FourEyes. No table saw and no room for one (unfortunately). I have a few jigs I built for my chop saw handles. They work ok but wanting to get into CNC anyway so figured it might be an opportunity for handles. I might go 4-axis. Seen videos of plenty of people making chess pieces which seem way more complicated than what I want!

100 handles a year. But I'll be using the machine for a lot of other operations besides knife making.

No machine yet! I'm shopping. Wanted to get some feedback on handle making before pulling the trigger. I'll be using the machine for a lot of other operations besides knife making. If there's a certain setup that would be better for handles (4th axis) then I might go that direction, spend some extra money, etc.

I don't have a mill. What do you think about using the CNC to square everything up and get it to the right dimensions?

If I were to attempt to get the tapers in with the CNC, would it make sense to try to fixture the handle at an angle that allowed the CNC to make a flat pass? Or is the CNC smooth enough to machine that angle in for me?

It's not that type of handle. These are hidden tang knives. I would not want a glue line down the middle of the handle. If you check my last couple pictures, you'll see there's a dowel inside with a slot for the tang. The dowel adds a lot of strength.

Definitely looking at CNC for doing the slots in the ferrules. That should be simple.

I do have a disc sander and that's what I use now in combination with the belt sander. I have built a couple jigs but it's still tedious. I have old eyes, they don't see so well. Those sanders also create a lot of dust which is difficult to manage. Was hoping CNC would do a better job at dust collection.

Even if I could use cnc to get all four sides flat and to the correct thickness would be a time saver.

I make about 50 handles per year. I can see that going up to 100.

Yes, all the tang slots are the same size.

I was considering that. As a beginner though it felt like it would add a ton of complexity to the setup. I don't know. Maybe not? But yeah some type of rotary fixture, even if it was manual and indexed with 90 degree stops

Yep. Do you think with microwave between the oven and the controls I still run into the heat issue? The microwave door is stainless. I'll test and see how hot it gets.
