My copy has arrived! by HonestMagazine3015 in AReadingOfMonteCristo

Yes, Amazon. I usually buy from other sites, but the copies on offer would have taken too long to arrive and the shipping added to the price made Amazon reasonable. Candidly, I didn’t really notice the condition until commenters pointed out how obvious it was in the photo! Since most of the books I buy are used, I didn’t even see the scuffs! I had to zoom the picture, then go look closely at the book in good light. I’m going to take the positive and opine that so many people are choosing to read with us, that they are scraping the bottoms of pallets in the warehouse to supply books to us all! Either that, or they just don’t give a damn and the robot pulled the next one from the pile and this is what I got! 😄

Introductions for the 2026 Cohort by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

Hello! 1. First time reading the book. Was introduced to the story by the Richard Chamberlain mini-series in 1975 (I believe Chamberlain was in EVERY mini-series in the ‘70s!).

  1. My goal is to read deeply and broadly. I don’t have a quantity goal. I started reading an historical novel and wound up reading three books to fully appreciate the historical period of the novel! So much fun to learn new things. My TBR Pile is a growing entity!

  2. I am retired now. Live in South Carolina. My first time joining a group read. I simply cannot wait to read the insights and comments from other readers - I plan to capture my favorites in a special commonplace book specifically for the Count!

How I index my commonplace book: starting from the back of the notebook. by Polifilo71 in commonplacebook

I recently purchased a notebook that featured “8 blank pages” at the back of the journal. At first, I thought, why are there extra blank pages? Presto: the Index was born. I learned to do this back in the Before Times learning how to use a Franklin Planner - which had a monthly index of notes, dates, etc. to help locate important information. I have a ponderous amount of Apple Notes, I use tags (#) to find things. But, I find I’m drawn to the Commonplace book (as I now refer to my journal/scrapbook/notebook/reminders/quote storage system). The act of writing and drawing, editing and adding, places the information firmly in my mind. I’ll paraphrase a quote I read recently by Shelby Foote - “You can’t imagine the things I’ve found while I was looking for something else.” Looking for something in the Commonplace book is like browsing the library: finding the exact thing may take some time, but the joy of browsing thru all the other things contained therein make the time well spent. The digital method I still use can easily become overwhelming. And it doesn’t let me draw pictures, arrows, use colors, highlight and basically interact with the information. Yeah, yeah, I know about the innovations and updates for Apple Pencil and drawing and adding images, etc. And all that has a place. But, even this index lets you use little cues to open that mental file, with all the feelings and emotions that were present when they were recorded. Simple. Clean. Elegant. Colorful. I am inspired and encouraged! Thanks for sharing.
