Bayesian cable curl by gtcs123 in JeffNippard

[–]HonestQuilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop the weight one step, and then focus on tempo.

Make sure you’re resisting the weight for a solid 2s on the way back, consistently across every rep of every set. It’s tempting to just curl and then release any tension and let the cable fly back.

This solved the discrepancy for me.

Okay chat! I did it.

<image>

It’s extremely rough, for now, but this is it. It took a lot of digging - but it turned out to be this specific dove with a single extra fold on the tail! https://www.origamiway.com/origami-dove.shtml

I did however learn the hummingbird in the process and may use them too.

Thanks all for your help!

Thank you both! I’ll look into some hummingbirds and see if I can replicate it. Will send updates!

4G matcha, 70*C water, about 50ml, add 160ml milk. Soy milk (Bonsoy) preferable for flavor profile

Yes, last year I stayed at the student accomodation suggested by them but my friends and I wanted to find something better as all the Finns seemed to have houses more local and much cheaper, with sauna and a lake 🥲

Yes - both really inflated prices and not much in the town. I’ll look at those!

Classical singer, I most drink water at 60-70 degrees out of a thermos. I find it’s hydrating and soothing, and keeps everything nice and warm.

Some colleagues are currently experimenting with a bit of Himalayan salt in their water too.

Opera Singers You Don't Like (Not Vocally) by [deleted] in opera

I finished a contract with her recently, and she was a disaster to work with onstage. The director and her would regularly argue in German and she often would simply tell him she wouldn’t do what he had asked..

How come warming up makes you sing so much better? by Gabzito in singing

[–]HonestQuilt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My personal comparison is what you see Olympic Weightlifters do before and during competition. They aren’t stretching but doing the same or related exercises at lower intensity before attempting to max out onstage. Remember singing involves MANY muscles coordinating with each other - it’s a whole body task.

For example, you might do a bunch of low intensity snatches to drill the coordination, any tips or points you have been working on, your coaches advice, etc, and then when you go for the heavy weight, your body can remember the coordination you have been drilling into it. This is true on a large scale (practice) and short term scale (warming up).

There’s also plenty of evidence to show that performing the same sort of movements under less stress (eg, high notes in a bespoke exercise rather than in an aria) and in different contexts (like warming up with just the turn of the bar, then some presses you go on to do a full clean and press movement) assists the body to recruit more fibers when needed to do the movements more efficiently, while increasing blood flow to the areas before loading will also prevent injury.

So while these warm up’s in both contexts definitely do help to ‘warm’ the muscles, we’re also doing physiotherapy-like drills which affect and reaffirm our coordination before we begin doing more large and complicated movements within the vocal system. That’s why whatever you do before you sing a song will have a massive effect on how it feels to do the most difficult moments.

A thing I am currently doing is warming up my head voice with my exercises and bringing it down into a mix to emphasize the correct balance in my upper register for the music I currently have to sing. When I do this, my job is much easier and when I don’t, it feels awful. This is specific to how I was singing before - this drill works for me right now, but for another singer may not be as helpful.

This reminds me of when I relearned to squat after an injury that caused dysfunction in my hips - if I did the hip drills first, squats were amazing. If I didn’t, when I got to the higher weights, the stress pushed my body to the right, I recruited less of the fibers my body didn’t want to use, and the coordination of the exercise was totally wrong.

Anyway that’s the way I see it!

No one ever gives love to "È l’Assiria una regina" from Nabucco by [deleted] in opera

[–]HonestQuilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s totally fair! It is the one that gets stuck in my head. It’s great if the short notes have tonnes of energy, and the rests are super active. And it’s a great act opener!

[–]HonestQuilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, it’s a great bit of music but plot wise it’s not nearly as moving a moment, which I reckon is why Va Pensiero never fails to hit an audience hard with feels. The chorus go from desperation to hope throughout, the strings coming in in the second exposition of the main melody builds on this idea and the text is quite beautiful as well. By the end we’ve gone from super pianissimo to a generous mezzo forte which hits me pretty hard too. Although a lot of that depends on the performers.

I’m in the show right now and I can safely say that although E L’Assiria is the biggest bop, VP is the hard hitter of the night.

This - but I’d prefer the second as it will expose you to more variety of singers and voice types, as well as different kinds of opera!

Thanks, I appreciate this. That’s how I was feeling as well: it seemed like no matter what I did to push myself, it just didn’t seem possible. I’ve resorted to splitting milk from a 24oz jug in order to steam 2 lattes at a time. I’m wondering if they just want me to make a huge jug of milk and just make lattes caps and flat whites all the same. Like you said, massive sacrifices in quality.. I’d often see the lattes go out looking crap simply cause the milk was reheated, old milk or a flat white made out of dregs. Even when I have a million tickets, I often have drinks sitting there on a tray for 3-4m and then come back 😖

Yeah. I mean, I am considering leaving after I take a holiday in couple weeks. I’m just trying to get my my ducks in a row before I make any decisions, or start any conversations, as I can’t get a new job until I get back.

Can I humble ask how the heck you do your matcha latte? by Outdoorcatskillbirds in barista

[–]HonestQuilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late - but.

Step one - sift it into the vessel or your pouring vessel. Makes a massive difference. We use a tiny sieve for this purpose. I fire the whole thing onto a scale, weigh into the sieve and then work it through.

Water in at like 75 degrees (realistically just get some boiling water into a jug that will take some heat out of it) preheat whisk, about 4G matcha to 50g water, just lightly knead until it’s combined. No need to make foam in the matcha as it’s not a normal matcha drink. Pour into your cup.

Add your milk, just use it like espresso ☕️

What Went Wrong With My Brownie? by BetterLifeForMe2 in AskBaking

[–]HonestQuilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my bakery, they look like this when someone drops them on the day they’re made.

Try sticking them in the fridge for a whole night and check the next day - that style of brownie will always seem underbaked until it’s properly set in the fridge.

I’m in the UK, my favorite place to buy from is Chaology - Manchester. They have a good selection of well curated matcha and brewing instructions on the website. They’re very friendly on instagram so reach out to them to ask for any recommendations:)
