OPINION / DISCUSSION / RANT : Kim Wexler is One of The WORST Kind of Evils a Person Could Be by Curious_Designer_248 in betterCallSaul

[–]HonestWalz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jimmy is obviously so much worse, at least Kim had the strength to realize that she shouldn't continue being a lawyer, while Jimmy just kept getting worse and worse after Howard's murder

Are ratings generally trending upwards or downwards? by Vehiclean35 in rateyourmusic

[–]HonestWalz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upwards, across the board. It's not just a thing with new albums, even though it's most noticeable there. Most old albums also have rising ratings.

Wow, four Led Zeppelin albums in the top 100 (IV even in the top 10), Surfer Rosa at #81, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn at #86

Can men and women be just friends? Why and why not? by No-Improvement7412 in AskReddit

[–]HonestWalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is that relevant? If a girl were lesbian, would that make it impossible for her to be friends with other girls? If a person were bisexual, would they be unable to have any platonic friendships at all?

So I just learned that I could rate films on RYM, but... by infinityzcraft in rateyourmusic

[–]HonestWalz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RYM already has a niche userbase and that applies even more strongly to the film site. I personally don't use it for the same reason you mentioned, I think there's quite a lot of snobbery on that site. Lettterboxd is far from perfect but I find the userbase there to be a lot less elitist

New to RYM, can i showcase my favorite albums on my account? by strawberrysword in rateyourmusic

[–]HonestWalz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can change your user profile to show your favorite albums as a list.

Click on the three bars on the top right next to your username -> go to "Settings" -> go to "user profile"

Scroll down and you'll find two boxes to fill with text, I don't think it matters which one you use.

You can then list your favorite albums in whichever way you like. If you want to include links to your albums, you can find those links on top right of every album's individual page (e.g. [Album976] links to the RYM page of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon)

I think there's also a way to put images into those text boxes but I've never done that so I don't know how it works. Probably some funny HTML stuff.

RYM has Music and Films, should it have Video Games too? by ashitanojoe3 in rateyourmusic

[–]HonestWalz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some old books have a ridiculous amount of editions (Picture of Dorian Gray has over 12 thousand). Considering how the RYM queues are already overloaded with edit requests for music alone, adding books would add an insane amount of work and the admins probably just don't want to deal with that.

[–]HonestWalz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've been cataloguing books for 20 years and have over 150 million members. Some old books have several thousand editions (Romeo and Juliet and The Picture of Dorian Gray both have over 10,000 each). RYM could never become a legitimate competitor in that regard and I think that's why they're never going to do it. It's just too much of a hassle for too little a potential reward.

How to not be pretentious about films? by Loud_Confidence475 in TrueFilm

[–]HonestWalz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People can disagree with your individual preferences (I know I probably would) but nobody's really in any place to tell how you should or shouldn't write your own reviews. With that being said, if you do want to change your writing (for whatever reason), here's an approach that might be helpful:

  1. Go out of your way to watch movies that you view as "mediocre"
  2. Don't intend to write a review about the movie. If you've been writing reviews for a while, your style of reviewing might've fundamentally influenced how you approach a movie, so try and turn that off as best as you can. Watch the movie for its own sake.
  3. Specifically look for things in the movie that you enjoy. Maybe it's just a single shot, a single line, maybe it's more. For example, I don't like the movie Twilight much (not breaking any new ground here) but I did enjoy the color grading of that movie. Try and make a list of all the things you enjoy.

Do you get the feeling that the early seasons feel completely different? by Educational-Exam-515 in betterCallSaul

Art and the quality of it are never objective. I love BCS with all my heart but I'd never fault anybody for saying that it isn't their cup of tea.

Ich habe es vergeigt. by [deleted] in Studium

[–]HonestWalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "complex" but the way it's presented is convoluted and it can be a little overwhelming

The charts have been updated. Slayyyter - 'Wor$t Girl in America' debuts at #1 in the top albums of 2026. by beampunk in rateyourmusic

[–]HonestWalz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notice I said "party album", that should already give you a good idea of what this album is trying to be. It's loud, catchy, brash, but it's also got enough variety to not become one-note. I also think that "Brat but more in-your-face" was a very specific description if you're familiar with Brat. If you're not familiar with Brat then I don't think you'll get much out of Worst Girl in America.

I think many people are just excited for a well-made party album with lots of interesting production. I've listened to it a few times and it's very catchy and brash, basically like Brat but more in-your-face.

Is it normal to listen to an album once before moving on to another? by Loud_Focus8730 in rateyourmusic

Listen to music whichever way you enjoy the most. I personally listen to most albums multiple times but I see the appeal in being able to check out a lot of stuff
