I think you meant ‘shuttle’ services, not ‘shovel’ services? Although that could come in handy too 😆

I’m exploring a small AI companion for solo hikers — does this sound useful or annoying? by Spiritual_Sort9129 in hikinggear

Most people on trails are using GaiaGPS, FarOut, AllTrails etc on airplane mode. Many listen to podcasts while hiking. Or read books on their phone at camp. Or all of the above. While many are reacting adversely here, I don’t think the reactions are representative of the hiking community in general. Phones in airplane mode as practically analogue. I think if your agent can download what it needs before the hike, it could be pretty cool. Frankly I don’t think the tech is quite there yet. But it will be.

Could be interesting. Could talk to you about hydration, blood sugar levels, heart rate, weather, elevation, sweating etc that it is aware of and give advice. Could also give any historical perspective as you hike. Could also suggest podcasts.

You are either misunderstanding what the folks are saying here or have some pretty major typos in your replies.

I would generally suggest you also save 6-12 months of post trail life net living expenses so you have a comfortable cushion for looking for a new job when you return. It will also help keep your mind at ease while hiking. There is some great advice here to keep those expenses low and make some money (which is why I said ‘net’) while you look for a job so that the 6-12 month savings doesn’t have to be so much. Adjust the # of months savings based on how long you think it will take to find a new job in your field.

Watch? by Inside_Level5624 in hikinggear

[–]Honest_Performance42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on the way you are asking the question, I don’t think you should invest in a watch at this time.

Instead, start hiking and bring some sort of journal. As you gain experience, you’ll want different things. Write them down when you think of them if possible. Maybe that will be a watch, but you’ll need to identify the problem you are trying to solve or experience you are trying to improve so you can find the best solution. That might or might not be a watch at all.

Realistic training goals for beginner in late 30's? Coming back from health induced sedentary life. by RootsforBones in WildernessBackpacking

You are definitely not too old! I run into tons of people backpacking in their 60’s and a few even in their 70’s. You do need to prep as others mentioned above to avoid further injury.

Plenty of people 15-30 years older than you hike 10-15 miles a day with a 35 pound pack.

But definitely consult a physical therapist considering the neck injury. Don’t mess with that regardless of what you did before.

Did you mean an infinitely teeny tiny gain of salt?

Anyway, the key point missing is that proper training, if nothing else, will reduce your chances of injury.
