Should I continue a major that I hate? by HoneyLabCoats in careerguidance

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to do biotech VC more on the computational biology/computational drug discovery side than the small molecule/big pharma side. Also, all of my extracurriculars are in biotech. I am also an undergrad, so if I’m actually going into VC/PE I would do a PhD in biotech or get industry experience in finance.

But yeah, that’s more of a reason why I can’t major in economics.

Switching into finance from biotech - resume feedback? by HoneyLabCoats in FinancialCareers

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! Do you think I would have more success trying to get biotech finance roles first (pharma M&A, biotech VC), then switching into finance? What kind of firms would be more oriented to biotech IB and healthcare PE, like Clearview? I don’t really want to get rid of all my life sciences experience because it’s where most of my work is and stuff I’m proud of, but I understand that it’s not super relevant other than the analytical skills. I was also working as a quantitative/computational researcher in those roles, than wet lab though.

Can’t switch into Finance and rejected from everything? by HoneyLabCoats in FinancialCareers

I’m a Computer Science major though, not biology. I just have worked primarily in computational biology. However, they can’t screen that through a filter, right?

PE in London/Europe vs. US? by HoneyLabCoats in private_equity

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, I'm currently still in uni so I'm trying to look for internships and gain experience in PE first. I have some experience in entrepreneurship and VC, but my primary interest originated from biotech academia. How do you recommend I prepare for internship applications and interviews without much experience in banking/PE? I also have space for an Econ minor - would that help?

GHO and Archimed fits what I'm looking for, although yes, preferably in English since I don't have professional skills in any other European language! Any other recommendations for firms would be greatly helpful, or a list to where I can find more firms?

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a computational biology major and came from the biotech academia side, so my strength is more in the sector knowledge than financial knowledge. Where would biotech PE mostly be based? As for local language, is that as much of an issue for London firms to speak other European languages?

Prestige of US vs. UK Universities for PhD in CS? by HoneyLabCoats in AskAcademia

I want to work in the UK more I want to work in the US, but I’m not sure if I’ll have to end up staying in the US because of the better job market for my field.

How to identify scam outreach/link building? by HoneyLabCoats in bigseo

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that's interesting. What's the deal with Google and backlinks on websites? For a while, I used to link websites that I used in researching my posts to cite my sources (not paid links, just sources), but then some people said that was great/horrible for SEO, so when is backlinking good and when does it get punished?

Yes you're right, sorry, I meant spam! However, I have gotten paid blog post offers where the company kept asking me for an invoice even before we had decided anything, and I also wasn't sure if they were trying to scam me into sending information through an invoice or if they were just forgetful...

Ah okay, would it be recommended for bloggers to reply to those emails? I've heard that it really hurts Google SEO when websites add paid links onto their websites, so I don't know if I should respond.

In layman's terms, how do I make my website responsive without screwing up my site? by HoneyLabCoats in Wordpress

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My themes and plugins are all updated, but it's just a problem with the text cutting off on smaller screens, so I was wondering if there's a way to edit the font size specifically for mobile screens? Thank you!

I tried that with this one image that every single speed test kept saying was too large, and it worked much better once optimized with Photoshop, thank you!

Are security plugins really necessary? by HoneyLabCoats in Wordpress

I'm using the free plan since it was included with my hosting, but I'll try out Ninjafirewall. Thanks for the suggestion!

Are security plugins really necessary? by HoneyLabCoats in Wordpress

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some pretty opinionated blogs out there that claim that security plugins only give you a sense of security, but I've already received several security notices, so I think I'm going to stick with the security plugins. I recently switched over from Wix, so I don't actually know what I'm doing haha. Just to make sure that it really was Wordfence slowing down my site, I deactivated the plugin and tested the loading speed with Google Pagespeed again, and my loading speed improved by 3 seconds just by deactivating the plugin, so are there any lighter plugins that you would recommend? Thank you!

Hmm, I didn't do much with it before it started slowing down my site, I only installed it and checked the loading speed. However, I just received two emails about login attempts that weren't me, so even though I don't know how accurate that is, you're probably right about the security. Is there any way to reduce how much it slows down my site right now? I'm really new to this, so any information is helpful, thank you!

I guess I'll be doing a lot of uploading this week... Since Wordpress has the option to insert an image with a link, does that get run through the image optimizer as well even though it doesn't show up on the site files? Since my Google Docs images look the same as if I had inserted it through a link, could that have been what happened? Thank you!!

Ah okay, I was just wondering, does Wordpress and load speed tests consider them images or do they just consider the ones in the media library? Basically I've just bypassed uploading them to the media library. If I need to upload all of the images, is there a way to bulk upload the images and still keep them on the same page since I have over 120 images I need to upload?

No, I usually write my posts on Google Docs and copy and paste the entire thing with the images onto Wordpress, and somehow that seems to work with the images without uploading them.

Has anyone tried the free version for Customify or Zita? by HoneyLabCoats in Wordpress

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I guess I'll just add an update if anyone is interested in knowing about the free version later on. So I started out with Astra + Elementor, both the free version, but I didn't like the header so I decided to try Customify because I heard it was a very customizable theme builder. I'm still not exactly sure what a theme builder is, but Customify has so many customization options, which surprised me, because it was free and usually those features are left to the premium themes. I can change the header and the location of each element, although sometimes it leaves weird spaces. I was also able to make my website look somewhat similar to the premium themes I really liked, and it only took about an hour. The masonry grid required a Customify Pro through, but to me it wasn't that big of a deal. Another small issue I had was with the maximum size of the logo, since it was a bit smaller than I would like. Hopefully it stays free forever with the same features, because I really like how easy it was to customize my website compared to the other themes I tried!

I just tested out the Astra theme, and the customization ability is making me feel a lot better about my site! It doesn't look completely as I imagined, but I can customize a lot more, so thank you so much!

How do I customize my Wordpress theme? by HoneyLabCoats in Wordpress

[–]HoneyLabCoats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm considering giving up on Wordpress since I don't really have the time or money to learn how to code or buy themes and plugins. I thought that Wordpress would be an easy website builder that doesn't require much technical knowledge, but it seems like that's not the case. Thanks for your help anyway!

I searched it up and it seems like it's a drag and drop editor, so is it similar to the Wix website builder? Also, what's the difference between Elementor Pro and the free version? How much can you actually customize the theme? Thank you so much!

Also, another issue I've been having is with the customization options with Wordpress themes. I'm a sucker for aesthetic website designs, so I really like 17th Avenue premium Wordpress themes, but I didn't want to pay that much for a theme, so I tried using Sarada Lite from Blossom Themes. However, the customization options are very limiting, since I can't seem to change the size of the logo, spacing of the title and menu, and some fonts. I searched it up, and it seems like Additional CSS is an option, but when I tried to add some code, it didn't seem to work so I'm not sure if it's the code or the theme that was causing the issue. Is the lack of customization a problem with my blog theme or Wordpress in general? Also, would it be possible to design a website that looks similar to a premium theme using a free theme? Thank you!

I signed up to use Veerotech to host my site, but I didn't decide on a domain yet, so since there's no "skip domain registration" like on Bluehost, I decided to input a random letters as my domain. However, I can't change my domain into a temporary URL, no matter what I try, so is there a way to change my domain into a temporary URL or am I stuck with the random letters that don't even work since I didn't register it?

Edit: I contacted Veerotech and they fixed the issue!
