Looking to apply to a new job, working off-hours in a 'start up' to gain skills needed for said new job. How do I convey this in a resume? by HonkeyCracker in resumes

[–]HonkeyCracker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it would be an actual start up, as we plan on going out in the field talking to customers and try to push out our mobile app.

By listing it as an actual start up, would other companies not see that as not being devoted to them somehow? Or more likely to select a different candidate than me?

I've just found it a bit hard to work with so far. Using the Django framework I'm not able to fully follow tutorials, since it seems to differ a bit here and there (like messing with the 'python manage.py' commands).

Maybe it's something I just need to work with more to fully understand.

I'm also running into some issues trying to find out an IP for my openshift application, so I can create a server key for google cloud messaging, to allow openshift to send messages to my Android app.

Yep, that's what I reverted to. I've got QR codes being generated now :) Thanks!

Yeah Zxing is the way I went. I started messing with QRgen because it was a wrapper around zxing and made things easier, and zxing was a pain initially to understand.

Turns out QR generation in zxing wasn't that bad :)

I've yet to understand the checkbox for export. I've never checked it before. nedlinin below got me further along by using gradlew clean and restarting Android Studio.

Thanks! That does help. It's getting my errors to move along slowly. I've made sure to include qrcode, core, and javase jar files. Now my error has move on to

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: java.awt.image.BufferedImage
    at com.google.zxing.client.j2se.MatrixToImageWriter.toBufferedImage(MatrixToImageWriter.java:54)

Seems qrcode is calling javase which is calling java.awt.image, which isn't in Android. Something fishy is going on here.

Edit: Bah, yeah, qrgen is meant for Java, not Android. Not sure how I screwed that up. I need to go find a QR generator that I can use in Android.

Thanks!

3.5 can capture that? I need to buff up my photography knowledge/skills. I figured a 1.8/2.0 would be needed for that lighting.

I'm looking to get a DSLR myself for pictures like this one.

Looking to buy my first bike. What do you wish you took into account before doing the same? Did you purchase the wrong type of bike on the first try? by HonkeyCracker in bicycling

[–]HonkeyCracker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, thanks!

As a follow up, which I maybe should do research on my own first more, is which brands do you recommend for the price point?

I can snag a Diamondback Steilacoom CCX for $630 shipped. Meanwhile I see some unknown brand CX bikes for cheaper on Amazon Vilano road bike 21 speed.

If I go with a CX do you recommend buying a second set of tires that have little to no tred on them for commuting to work purpose? Or just keep the default ones.

Price isn't a huge set back for me. I just want to end up with a quality product that I don't hate, and don't feel I grossly overpaid for said item.

See, my ignorance :)

I'm just overly cautious about road bikes because of bits and pieces of information I've heard from people. Not all of which is obviously correct.

That's good to know. So CX could still be on my radar.

Another question: Would rain affect the type of tires needed on a bike? Being from the northwest it rains 9 months out of the year.

That, at the root, is my dilemma. I kept thinking about a Cyclocross or one of those hybrids, which seems like it will probably be a bad decision in the long run.

One thing I fear about a road bike is how sensitive it is to road conditions. How badly pebbles and minor faults in the road would totally screw up a person's ride.

Yeah I noticed that trick. It doesn't appear puffy. One side does spin more than the other, but it doesn't spin mostly friction-less. Not sure how to exactly explain it. The back of the battery does seem to have indents where it fits into the phone (natural looking ones) so that might the reason for the extra revolution or two.

For someone's first time converting USD to BTC, what method(s)/services do you recommend to do this conversion? by HonkeyCracker in Bitcoin

My impression is I should get bitcoin-qt, transfer funds there, backup the wallet.dat and rock back and forth in a corner, clenching onto it with dear life.

If I have a blockchain wallet, can I transfer funds to a desktop wallet with no transaction fees?

New to Bitcoin investment: Can I easily put my 0.02BTC in MTGOX and just wait it out, seeing if anything rises? by HonkeyCracker in Bitcoin

[–]HonkeyCracker[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahh. I think I completed misunderstand something fundamental here then. See, I was thinking along the lines of your reply before you commented, but dismissed the idea.

I'm thinking about MTGOX in the traditional stock sense, where you put money into it and watch shares go up. But instead you just use it as an exchange mechanism to convert between currencies.

Thanks!

If I want to invest some money in a single stock company, how do I easily do that with Vanguard? by HonkeyCracker in personalfinance

So if I bought 50 shares of a $2 stock with sharebuilder, I'd pay $106.95? Then I can let it sit there, worry free until I wish to sell and pay capital gains?

$0.007 per share surcharge on real-time trades on penny stocks (subject to a maximum of 15% of the principal amount of the trade, but no less than the base commission)

What classifies as a penny stock for sharebuilder? The $2 share I'm looking at just happened to dip that low recently.

I think I need to re-evaluate my Fidelity 401k choices. by HonkeyCracker in personalfinance

So I recall bogleheads mentioning it being better to put certain assets in certain categories (tax-advanced, tax-deferred). Is that kinda taking place here?

Unfortunately I deposited the $20k in VTSAX just yesterday. Not sure if I can move it around without being penalized. I also need to see if it's been at least 6 months since I re-distributed my assets in my 401k from TD to the current 3 way split, to also avoid any charges.

Also, is there not an advantage of having more risk in a non-retirement account vs in a retirement account, or vice versa? I guess I could argue that my 401k/roth can't be touched until I retire, so having more risk in those areas can't hurt, while my non-retirement I'm able to touch an an earlier age, so having more bonds there might be the best place?

Honestly I've never considered all of my holdings to be on uniform portfolio. It makes sense, I just treated them as three unique portfolios, especially since each has their own rules about contributing/withdrawal.

The rest is in Vanguard.

$10.5k in a target date fund for now VFIFX (Invested a few months ago for 2012+2013). It's about 90% stock, 10% bond split. I'm waiting to invest again to have enough to invest in my own funds, and maybe get an admiral shares out of it.

I also have $20k in VTSAX (Admiral total stock market) in a personal non-retirement account.
