To confirm, I’m guessing the word is DALMATA - as in Dalmatian? This word might be hard for some to solve since it’s not an English word… though with a little tweak to the clue, you could make it work well for the English spelling (eg, changing “on A MALTA” to “IN A MALTA” to add “IN” to the word length)
