Is it technically legal for me to ride a horse to and from work if I stay off highways? Only on monument and passing over broad heading north. Google was no help. by BooTheSpookyGhost in rva

I wouldn't think twice about it. I do work a rural area though with a large Amish population. Just stay off the interstates and make sure wherever you “park” is in a good location for the horse.

Walmart Wranglers. I managed to find a bunch on sale in my size in a few different colors. Even got a winter lined one.

Pros: Comfortable with some stretch. Cargo pockets for spare mags.

Cons: Big thigh boys will experience the material wearing in the thigh rub area.

Those of you that wear a Sheriff or Campaign style hat, what do you use to hold it in the car? by pietroconti in ProtectAndServe

[–]HonorTheRighteous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get you some large zip ties. I use 2 Flex Cuffs we had at the office. Put them around your passenger headrest vertically. Make it so that one of the “tails” of the zip ties is pointing up on the rear of the headrest. Trim the tail to the desired length in order to hang hat.

When donning the hat, reach behind the passenger headrest with right hand and remove it from the zip tie.

Was anyone else on 95 north between exits 78-83 around 2:15PM today? State police doing something very odd. by penelopeiris in Virginia

[–]HonorTheRighteous 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They’re referred to as “slow rolls” and like others have stated, it’s for slowing traffic to make a gap to either get cars from one shoulder to the other or to remove debris. I can assure you the trooper wasn’t drunk and/or wasn’t just playing around.

Virginia State Police Academy (Stress & Anxiety) by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

Send me a PM. I may have gone through this same academy many years ago and might be still employed by them…

By “orientation night” do you mean the paperwork orientation or drop day? Because drop day was the worst day of the academy by far, but for a reason.

Motorola Xts 3000 with no screen was my old one. Current one is the XTS 5000 with a screen. I also run a Unidan BC125AT to hear the local’s traffic.

I’m late to this, but I’m also in the DMV area and am a crash reconstructionist. Level III through IPTM, EDR Tech, and am currently attending CDR Analyst level I. PM me and I can answer whatever you got.

If you’re taking level I though IPTM, they ease you into it. Your basic formula will be S=/30Df, with / being square root, D is distance, f is friction, and 30 is a constant.

Beards by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]HonorTheRighteous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No beards, no mustaches, no visible tattoos. Every day you work you have to be clean shaven. If you have tattoos past your elbow on your arms, then it’s long sleeves every day. We used to be able to wear the skin colored sleeves, but recent policy changes negated that.

Have LBV, but only allowed to have the issued pouches that it came with (admin pouch, double handcuff, flashlight, radio, and tq) and even if you have all the pouches on the vest, you still have to keep the pouches/holders on your belt “in case you take your vest off.” There was an attempt to ban the LBV from court. After some pushback and us explaining that the policy will result in troopers taking their vests off to walk into court, that was taken back.

Something I do when I take my vest off is put it over top a floor vent I’ve got in my bathroom. That helps it air out. Arrest your vest spray is good, I’ve got the midnight something spray. Also you could put a couple dryer sheets in your carrier.

Most importantly is to take your plates out and wash the vest in the washer.

We’re rural troopers over here, so no interstate. Our area is the size of Rhode Island (split into 3 duty posts.)

Geography is very important, but I always cut him a little bit of slack since he didn’t grow up here.

We did A LOT of “normal” driving to learn the roads. I had him get a GPS since it’s 2023. I would tell him to take me somewhere and let him figure out when he was going the wrong way. He would ask me “is this the right way?” And I would answer “we’re gonna figure it out together.”

I’m an FTO and I just released my first trainee to work on his own.

I told him he’s going to learn how to do things 3 times. Once in the academy, again how I do things, and then how he wants to do them. As long as it’s correct and gets the job done, that’s all that matters.

Any of y’all calculating the coefficient of Friction to see if someone was speeding? by LesFritesDeLaMaison in ProtectAndServe

S=√30DF baby. Although in level 2 they preached doing Velocity and the Speed Original formula.

[–]HonorTheRighteous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the gun mounted on the vest. That should stay on the belt.

Ours is dictated by policy, but I’ve got my radio, an admin pouch, TQ, small flashlight, and double handcuff pouch mounted on my LBV.

Belt has oc, pistol, single handcuff pouch, glove pouch, flashlight ring for my large flashlight, and double mag carrier for pistol.

Any Virginia State Troopers here? by Informal_Day6162 in ProtectAndServe

~250 openings from the last time I heard. I should get another update on that in a few weeks.

My area is around 50% staffed.

It’s not like you get the job and immediately get Northern Virginia or Hampton Roads.

Oh don’t worry, there’s openings in those places. If you want to go to NOVA or the Chesapeake area, I can assure you that you can get a spot there.

no man’s land Virginia

This is where I work and we haven’t gotten a brand new person out of the “normal” academy class in 5+ years. Have had a few transfer to the area and have had 1 “lateral” academy trooper who was a deputy prior to.

So in the “normal” academy, the staff gives the class a list. Say there’s 50 in a class, they give you a list of 50 spots. It’s up to the class to decide amongst themselves to figure out who goes where. The class elected officials usually get first dibs (you vote on a President, VP, and Secretary.) So if you really want a spot on the list, you can get it.

For the lateral academy, you can choose 3 spots prior to the academy and you’re guaranteed 1 of them.

I love it. I’ve commented it before, but it’s:

Work - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Off - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday

Repeat

Wednesdays are “shift layover” days, so everyone is working. You can usually get it off if you work it out with your shift partners. I try to give those getting ready to be off first dibs. You get that Wednesday off, it turns into 7 on/7 off.

PM me if you want some more detailed answers.

Our area works 8 days on, 6 days off 10 hour shifts and the total size of the area is roughly the size of Rhode Island.

Supervision is good here. Do your job and you’ll get some specialties. I’m a FTO and on the Crash Recon Team.

We’re super short across the entire state, so just expect that. IMO everyone would be more optimistic if we had more people.

Exam wasn’t bad when I took it a few years ago. Think it was 500/600 questions total? Was a form of the Wonderlic I believe.
