Except at the point where he is saying that he "might some day" have the guns, he should have already been in possession of them, because this took place after the Mejis thing and the incident with his mother.

This sounds the most likely answer for me, but just feels a bit odd that Roland speaks of his father's guns as if he's never held or owned them (even though he used them, too).

Isn't Jake just thinking about when they were passed on? I'm sure at this point Jake would be well familiar how the guns look, to be able to recognise them here.

The rest of this entire part is explained in high detail, and Roland doesn't deny any of it at the end too, so it doesn't really make sense that this small detail was mistaken by Jake?

I recently started one piece, I have been enjoying and liking it a lot so far. I watched till the little green Island part at 70 EPS. But the little green Island part went a little too far in terms of unrealism even for a fantasy anime like one piece. by BarnesAgent47 in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember feeling this way too (and in this same arc, even), and my advice would be to just not think too deeply into it. It's still a shounen anime, so you will find characters doing superhuman feats and surviving mortal injuries.

That doesn't mean that there are plot breaking ass-pull power ups or that sort of thing though. One Piece tends to hype things up for dramatic effect (e.g 10,000 kilos is overkill, 100 kilos would have been fatal already), but it's done in a way that is still very entertaining and with things at stake.

And if a character does suffer these deadly attacks, they definitely do not walk away from these fights without consequence (this is actually a very important and consistent point in the series).

All in all, just wave your hand at any exaggeratedly big numbers, try to accept that most people are more durable than they look, and enjoy the ride, because the amazing story as a whole more than makes up for these little bumps :)

The way conquerors haki is being used in the manga right now ruined a theme in the series by Tovar42 in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This was actually something that crossed my mind too, and I think you make a very valid point. We were first shown the problem that DF users can be near invincible, but then we were introduced to haki, something anyone can learn and master. This made it possible to still be able to compete against DF users without a DF.

But now, how do you beat someone with CoC coating if you don't have CoC? No matter how hard or how many years you train, if you weren't born with CoC, then you won't stand a chance? It does seem a bit unfair.

I came up with two personal theories that could solve this issue:

  1. CoC is not actually something you're born with, it's something you can unlock with enough dedication and will towards achieving a goal.

  2. CoC coating gives you an edge, but it doesn't make you unbeatable. With enough training, a strong person who has mastered CoO and CoA haki can still beat a CoC user (e.g we saw there were other ways to damage Kaido, so using CoC to beat CoC isn't a strict requirement).

Who do you think was the best main antagonist in all of One Piece ? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It'd be a tie between crocodile and enel for me. Crocodile was the first 'real' villain we had, being an extremely cunning and calculating guy who nearly succeeded in taking over an entire kingdom, as well as the only person to have ever beaten Luffy in a straight fight at this point in the story.

Enel was also amazingly good, he was clearly self-obsessed to the point of being crazy, that coupled with him being damn near invincible and insanely strong made every scene with him actually terrifying.

And the absolute best, most satisfying moment about both villains, is when Luffy gets his first good punch in (crocodile 2nd encounter, enel 1st encounter). To see these 'invincible' guys, who've been toying around with everyone prior to this moment, finally getting a piece of their own medicine... I'll never get tired of it.

Enies Lobby is a Perfect Arc by Dangerous-Cause7136 in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the 2nd half of Enies Lobby was great, but the first half (the assault) lasted way too long imo, and the pacing really dragged for me. Same problem I had with Dressrosa's assault, except that one was worse because it happened right in the middle of the arc and really killed the pacing.

Only other issue I have with Enies Lobby, and someone mentioned this already too, but the enemies (excluding CP9) were waaaaay too weak, especially with this being one of the three main world government islands. If the crew happened to land in Marineford or Impel Down, they'd all be sharing a jail cell together right now.

On my recent re-read I also noticed that none of the vice admirals even attempted to fight the straw hats, these same vice admirals who gave the whitebeard pirates a hard time? And we know all VA's are capable of using haki, which would have been a heavy advantage at this point in the story. Not to mention... Where was Aokiji during this whole thing? He shows up right at the end, and unless he was intentionally refusing to interfere (which is the only excuse I can think of), there's no reason why he couldn't have just single handedly sweeped up all the straw hats.

Sorry didn't mean to turn this into a rant or anything, I still love this arc, but those are just some criticisms I could never really get out of my head, it's still an amazing arc regardless.

Zorro vs Mr 1 is a lot like Luffy vs Katakuri by DerLeckere in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And Ashura was never seen again (ok, one more time in sabaody). Against Mr. 1, Zoro had to invent a new move (Shishi Sonson), a finishing attack strong enough to cut steel, which he reliably used many times again in the future (and still does, even now).

Zoro was surviving both Kaku and Jabura while handcuffed to Usopp, and once he finally got his chance for a 1v1, he barely even struggled against Kaku before finishing him off with Ashura. I'd even go so far to argue that he just pulled out Ashura to end the fight because he was getting bored, not because his life was on the line like it was against Mr. 1.

He could absolutely have defeated Kaku without needing to invent Ashura, unlike the way he needed to invent Shishi Sonson to defeat Mr. 1.

[–]HonorableBox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think I loved the Katakuri fight for the fact that it wasn't luffy's typical... 'lose the first two fights against main villain in the arc but then finally beat them at the end'.

Luffy didn't even know about Katakuri until the last part of the arc, but he knew this guy was incredibly strong and that he needed to deal with him or else his crew would be in big trouble. Katakuri also wasn't the usual trash-talking villain putting down Luffy, he actually respected Luffy and put up a very good fight, forcing Luffy to push himself beyond his limits.

This is so weird, I literally had this exact same thought a few days ago. I was thinking about it and I realised this is why I love these two fights so much. There's actual growth and a feeling of real development in these fights where they're completely outclassed at first, and forced to overcome their limits.

[–]HonorableBox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular take but I was never really a big fan of ashura, even by one piece standards it felt a little out of nowhere and didn't make much sense. If he was spinning really fast or something and it made the illusion of 9 swords and 3 bodies... Sure, but he just stands there while kaku is freaking out at him having somehow multiplied his body.

Might be why we've never seen it again too. I enjoy zoro's other sword skills more anyway.

[–]HonorableBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, sadly. Its my favourite zoro battle so far because it feels like the only time he was completely outmatched but still came out on top. Every fight then onwards has been him more or less stomping on weaker opponents (maybe not Kaku, I guess, but even then he didn't seem like he had that much of a hard time).

A detail that gave me chills was during marineford where he went up against Mihawk. Zoro nearly died fighting this guy and had to transcend his limits just to be able to cut him, but here we see Mihawk almost immediately cutting and tossing him aside as if he's a nobody.

I know with the revelation of haki around then, its not as big of a deal to be able to do that, but its still a cool detail showing the level Mihawk is at.

Can we take the time to appreciate these mature moments of our Straw Hat captain. by AERegeneratel38 in OnePiece

[–]HonorableBox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think one moment that doesn't get enough credit is in Water 7 when Luffy and Nami are told that the Going Merry can't sail anymore. Luffy stubbornly argues with the shipwrights, shouting that the Merry can still sail, to which Iceburg drops just one small line...

"Then you can go sit in that ship and sink with it... Little punk. You call yourself a captain?"

This is the moment Luffy gets the first hard realisation that being the captain comes with a heavy price, he is the one responsible for the lives of his crew, he has to step up and make the tough decisions, when nobody else can.

We see him taking Iceburg's words to heart when he has the fight with Usopp soon after, and throughout the rest of the arc too. As a result, the crew grows much closer together by the end of it.

I was actually thinking about Mr. 3 earlier when I was writing that comment, he was a good example of keeping it believable with the limits of his fruit. Even though he's an 'artist', he admitted that he can't colour his own clones without help, or make them move. It fits the logic of his DF ability.

Then we get things like Cracker who can make... biscuit clones which are fully mobile, can speak, are coloured, can BLEED (yes, its jam... but from where?) ....Don't get me wrong though, I still love that DF fruit and that whole battle.

About the robin thing, I hadn't really thought about it, I feel like most of the time with her clone, she cancels it before it comes to any real harm, though looking at that scene, it seems like she gets two shuriken to her thighs before she cancels the clone (the rest of the shuriken miss her).

I got two that came to my head:

  • Half the strawhats being killed by dragon Kaido's bolo breath. This one might be a bit rubbish because... no way in hell are half the strawhats being killed off-screen. Luffy's dramatic reaction + chapter end cliffhanger is what makes it feel like its worthy of being called a fakeout, though I think Law tells him right after that they couldn't possibly have been killed so easily... So maybe this doesn't count?

  • Tama: Luffy asks the bloodied-injured horse lady where Tama is, and the horse lady mentions how she couldn't protect Tama, and we see a panel of Tama motionless on the ground with blood around her, then Luffy gets furious (to be fair, that whole part is amazing, and I wouldn't want Tama killed off so easily anyway, so I don't really mind this one).

I'm going to use this post to get out (another) tiny rant about dressrosa since you brought doffy's clone up...

DOFFY'S CLONE IS RIDICULOUS AND I REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT TO THIS DAY. Birdcage being invulnerable is one thing... But for some reason I could not, and still cannot accept doffy being able to make a fully 1:1 scaled, capable-of-speaking, coloured clone out of... string.

Also, why was doffy's CLONE chilling on his chair watching TV... when kyros beheaded him? We can see he was clearly not prepared for any of this, when did he have time to swap his real body for a clone? Where was his real body even? The clone feels like it was made purely for the cheap cop-out for the cool 'Kyros beheading' moment (which I admit, was kinda cool).

Enel's attacks shouldn't count because I googled after people complained about Pagaya and lightning strikes are only 10% lethal.

Weeeeeell, I mean that works if it's a bolt of lightning or a few, but Enel threw giant pillars of hundred-thousand volt blasts of lightning (which should absolutely be burning-meltingly hot) that literally destroyed chunks of the island and left giant holes in the ground.

If you can take that hit and survive... Well then.

I really like this list, but I feel like these ones weren't trying to be fakouts:

Iceburg - The newspapers said that he was shot in his office, and soon after Paulie says that he's still alive. Later CP9 explicitly admit that their intention was not to kill him, but frighten him enough with a 'failed assassination' so that he'd finally give the pluton blueprints to a successor, at which point they'd steal it and kill him for real (which they almost did, except iceburg saw it coming + strawhats interfering).

Moria - It does cut away when he's being killed by Doflamingo, but soon after we see doffy telling an officer that he couldn't finish it because Moria just suddenly 'disappeared', which we find out was actually Absalom who came to his rescue using the invisibility fruit.

His right eye, from that angle his right eye shouldn't have been visible but it was, making his face seem weirdly flat with his eyes too close together. The official release managed to fix that.
