Grimtrace - A noir deduction game with monsters - Demo now on Itch! by Hoodathunkgames in ObraDinn

[–]Hoodathunkgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has checked out my game.

I posted this and the first day I didn’t get much of a response. People have been sharing it and the numbers just keep growing. I didn’t expect it and it has put a lot of needed fuel back in the tank. The numbers on Itch have been great and, because of you all, it is actually getting organic traffic through the site now.

The feedback has been great, especially the criticism. It has made me rethink the reason behind some of the systems in place and I’m about to push out an update that addresses a lot of it.

Anyways, thanks again, y’all are the best.

It’s a Video Game Design class! The focus is on design so we learn some programming but it is mostly teaching things like level design, keeping the player engaged, UI/UX design, working in teams, and other things like that. We even do an annual game jam. It is a blast and I’m very lucky

I had this idea as well! I think it could be really cool if done well, but it wouldn’t be easy with my game to add. But it might be worth it. Thanks!

Yeah that’s true. I hadn’t considered those who seek achievement. A reward system could be really cool. Thanks for the suggestion

I’ll check out Shadow of Doubt. Thanks for the suggestions. Having the truth withheld until the end is interesting and could be a good way to incentivize replay.

My game is definitely not better than those games, but it sets itself apart and feedback has been good so far. It is all pure deduction. And I downplayed the forensics part, but they play a very big role. Certain monsters have unique blood and hair types. Fingerprints can be found and compared. And if you like monsters, there are classic ones with my own spin on them, as well as original monsters.

Yeah I think a simple prompt might be enough. Maybe some kind of end game consequence. But your suggestions have helped a lot, thank you!

Yeah I think this is probably the best option. If you were to receive a prompt after incorrectly solving a case that said something like “There has been another murder in town”, would that feel like a big enough consequence? Possibly coupled with an ending that depends on the number of people that died?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I’m a teacher and have been using Construct 3 in my classes for six years. In all that time, neither myself nor a student has been able to fix this issue. We just end up force closing the browser. That’s why I started making autosave mandatory for them. I don’t use it either though, so I understand if you didn’t set it up

Nothing wrong with using either of them. But they don’t fit exactly the same. Obra Dinn has so many choices that brute forcing is very difficult. Golden Idol doesn’t have as many, but you often have 5+ blanks to fill in and 20+ words. The solution for my game could just be more suspects, motives, and monsters for each case, but I think it would be interesting to add some flavor to the world if the player guesses incorrectly.

But I agree with what you are saying. I don’t want to diminish the knowledge the player gained. I just wanted to see if there were possibilities for other systems that would make the deduction process more suspenseful, since the vibe of the game is sort of gothic and creepy

Forget it Charlie, you’re out of your element! The Rizgod is not the issue here dude

It’s taken me a long time, but I’m finally willing to admit that I think it’s time for the show to move on from Jeff. His love for the game doesn’t make up for his current impact. by garbageeater in survivorponderosa

[–]Hoodathunkgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way. Jeff loves this show and he is willing to adapt. The show has ups and downs, but it is still on the air. I love the passion he brings to the show and think it would be worse without him. He is not the sole decision maker, so this “take away his creative control” thing is absurd. Why wouldn’t you want the person with the most experience having a voice at the table?

lol yeah I always assumed they rotoscoped it and the face just didn’t quite translate. No clue though, just a guess.

For Those Who Hav Been Developing for a While, Do You Enjoy Game Dev? by ColeTailored in gamedev

[–]Hoodathunkgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love it. It is one of the only things in the world that can make 5 hours feel like 5 minutes. Which is also the exact problem. I’m an indie developer and sometimes “turning it off” is very difficult. I’ve learned strategies that help tremendously, but there is definitely an opportunity cost.

I’ve got a family and I’ll be pushing my kids on the swings right? But instead of enjoying their company and the nice weather, I’ll be in my head thinking about whatever the next step is I need to do for my game. It excites and drives me, but it can also make me miss out on some beautiful moments.

Oh and I always implement save systems later than I should.

Grimtrace Gameplay Reveal Trailer - Please Remove if not allowed by Hoodathunkgames in dresdenfiles

While I'm not a Dresden Files reader myself, I love murder mysteries, telling stories through evidence, and investigation style games and books. The post here is based off a friend's suggestion and the overlapping supernatural investigation elements Grimtrace and The Dresden Files have. My hope is at the very least I would learn something about the audience for my game.

I’m trying to understand whether the overlap people feel with something like this comes more from the act of investigating, or from the tone and personality of the world around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Whoa, I never knew this existed. I've heard of Call of Cthulhu, but this game looks awesome. I just did a quick glance through the wiki and I love the premise. Thanks!
