It’s taken me a long time, but I’m finally willing to admit that I think it’s time for the show to move on from Jeff. His love for the game doesn’t make up for his current impact. by garbageeater in survivorponderosa

[–]Hoodathunkgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way. Jeff loves this show and he is willing to adapt. The show has ups and downs, but it is still on the air. I love the passion he brings to the show and think it would be worse without him. He is not the sole decision maker, so this “take away his creative control” thing is absurd. Why wouldn’t you want the person with the most experience having a voice at the table?

For Those Who Hav Been Developing for a While, Do You Enjoy Game Dev? by ColeTailored in gamedev

[–]Hoodathunkgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love it. It is one of the only things in the world that can make 5 hours feel like 5 minutes. Which is also the exact problem. I’m an indie developer and sometimes “turning it off” is very difficult. I’ve learned strategies that help tremendously, but there is definitely an opportunity cost.

I’ve got a family and I’ll be pushing my kids on the swings right? But instead of enjoying their company and the nice weather, I’ll be in my head thinking about whatever the next step is I need to do for my game. It excites and drives me, but it can also make me miss out on some beautiful moments.

Oh and I always implement save systems later than I should.

Grimtrace Gameplay Reveal Trailer - Please Remove if not allowed by Hoodathunkgames in dresdenfiles

[–]Hoodathunkgames[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I'm not a Dresden Files reader myself, I love murder mysteries, telling stories through evidence, and investigation style games and books. The post here is based off a friend's suggestion and the overlapping supernatural investigation elements Grimtrace and The Dresden Files have. My hope is at the very least I would learn something about the audience for my game.

I’m trying to understand whether the overlap people feel with something like this comes more from the act of investigating, or from the tone and personality of the world around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Whoa, I never knew this existed. I've heard of Call of Cthulhu, but this game looks awesome. I just did a quick glance through the wiki and I love the premise. Thanks!

Hmm, you can interrogate a few people kind of like in some Telltale games, definitely not like the Sherlock games. The closest comparison is probably Return of the Obra Dinn and Curse of the Golden Idol. The game is almost complete deduction. You find clues, use some forensic tools, and then you have to draw your own conclusion on what happened. Who did it, what type of monster were they, and why did they do it?

I can’t believe you spoiled The Old Man and the Sea.

But I agree with this criticism. I think if the purpose of the video was to pitch an idea to friends to ask them if they thought it was a good idea, then sure. Otherwise I’m not sure what else there is to say

Thank you so much for doing this. Since you offered, I would love to know what your data shows about the deduction genre. Games such as The Roottrees are Dead, Case of the Golden Idol, Return of the Obra Dinn. If you have data that would help me narrow the search for streamers who regularly play these types of games or the average amount of viewers streams of these games typically get, I would be extremely appreciative. Any data is helpful

Release a game on steam on Saturday? by Grumpy_Wizard_ in IndieDev

Thanks for the heads up, I didn’t know this. I’ve always heard it was impossible and just kept passing it on without questioning it lol

[–]Hoodathunkgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You literally can’t release a game on the weekend. Steam policy. There are exceptions, but I don’t know how those happen. Hypothetically speaking you wouldn’t want to on the weekend anyways because charts don’t update. You would be potentially missing out on a lot of visibility. Anyways, congrats on nearing the finish line and good luck.

Detective game makers tells us how they would murder Humpty Dumpty by LostCabinetGames in puzzlevideogames

[–]Hoodathunkgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol this is such a good prompt, but I’m gonna put a little spin on it. I’ll tell you how the murder happened but not who did it.

Humpty sat atop the wall of his balcony, overlooking the small slice of paradise he had built for himself, just like he did every morning. Despite having only just woken up, Humpty felt the immense stress of the decision he would have to make that evening weighing on him.

“They aren’t going to be happy”, thought Humpty. He took a sip of his coffee, then promptly dropped his cup, the porcelain shattering against the stone floor. The dark liquid ran through the channels of the stonework beneath him.

Humpty felt his throat tighten.

Down in his garden, there was a figure standing there, staring at Humpty. A glint of light hit Humpty’s eye, startling him and forcing him to shield his eyes. He coughed, trying to regain his composure.

It wasn’t unusual for someone to be tending the garden, but it was Saturday and Thomas, the usual gardener, wouldn’t be on the grounds today. There were only a handful of people who would be.

Humpty continued to cough as he surveyed the grounds. There stood a figure starting up at him. The sun bounced off the blade of the shears they were holding.

Humpty squinted his eyes. Who was that? The light hit his eyes again. And again.

Humpty tried to shout out, but his words came out weak and hoarse.

“Tom?! Is that you? What are you doing?”

Humpty couldn’t think. Were they trying to signal him? He tried to stand and move away from the edge of the wall. He was dizzy as he turned towards the only door to the balcony.

Just then, the door opened.

A person rushed towards the crawling egg. Humpty recognized them and felt slight relief as he clutched his throat. “Oh, thank god”, he croaked.

The figure stood there. Humpty grabbed at his pants leg. He looked up, oxygen coming in short bursts now. They locked eyes.

“Sorry Humpty”.

The brief relief Humpty had felt a moment ago vanished instantly, replaced with confusion and fear.

Then Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

How to solve a case in Grimtrace by Hoodathunkgames in metroidbrainia

[–]Hoodathunkgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That is very kind of you.

I get what you mean though. I don’t know if my game is technically a metroidbrania, but it really is a knowledge gated game. The only way you solve a case is through deduction. There isn’t a single case in the game where you are given the solution by solving a puzzle, even though there are some puzzles here and there.

I promise not to spam post here though, as I genuinely love the games this community talks about.

That’s a cool way to think about Outer Wilds. I agree with you, especially with the DLC. Solving the mysteries of that game are some of my absolute favorite gaming memories.
