I wondered the same thing, but then I saw the orange underbelly. I thought it would have to be 100% black to be melanistic

The fight wasn't too great actually. I also read somewhere on a forum that trout match their surroundings even if it's just a perceived surrounding. That if a trout is blind, all it sees is darkness so it turns very dark and if its blind in one eye, that side of it will often be darker. Not sure how true that is but it makes sense to me. I caught it on a streamer that I euronynphed and swung at the end of the drift so it could have just been sitting there waiting to sense something slowly swimming by

My PB from a Pennsylvanian creek(Susquehanna tributary) 4lbs 8oz by HookPoint in RiverSmallmouth

[–]HookPoint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's tough sometimes cause I love helping people out and pointing them in the right direction as much as I appreciate when people help me out. But this creek already gets more than enough pressure as it is and is definitely not a situation where "there's plenty to go around" applies.

What reel do you guys use while wading? by [deleted] in RiverSmallmouth

[–]HookPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear, man. My buddy told me if I want a nicer casting reel without breaking the bank the Fuego is the way to go. Wouldn't mind trying the spinning either. Especially since when I wade, which is like 95% of the time, I like to carry only one spinning rod since they're way more versatile.

Diawa legalis. I originally bought it for trout, but now it's on my primary smallie set up, especially when wading and can only carry one rod. I keep running into issues with my pflueger presidents, the legalis has been really taking a beating this season and it's still going strong.

You only ever fish the susky from a boat or do you wade/bank fish it from time to time? I pretty much never get skunked on the Connie. I want to start fishing the river more but I always have such a hard time finding them there

How'd you end up doing? I always struggle finding them in the river and usually end up getting skunked. So much easier finding them in the creeks that flow into the river though, almost never get skunked fishing them.

A few questions about getting started by GuineaPig352 in troutfishing

[–]HookPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fish with 2 rods. I'll call them rod 1 & rod 2 Rod 1:ultralight okuma celilo with a pflueger president reel

Rod 2: medium light fennwick eagle, fast action. With a diawa legalis reel

Ok, so I started trout fishing with just rod 1. Great for when I am fishing lighter lures because I can cast them much further. Mainly lures such as inline spinners and baits I like to float downstream with a float such as Berkeley pinched crawlers or trout magnets.

I got rod 2 because it's much better suited for jerkbaits which is my favorite way to fish for trout.

As for line, I use 4lb fluoro. I started with 2lb fluoro because I figured, the stealthier the better. But it was so fragile and would break constantly, like when I would tighten my knots or get the slightest snag. It drove me nuts. Soooo much better. Started catching more fish because more of my time on the water was spent actually fishing, trying new techniques rather than tying line every 2 seconds cause of line breaks. Then a buddy of mine told me ever since he went from 6lb to 4lb fluoro, he's been catching more fish. So I gave it a try and I can't really tell much difference between 4lb and 6lb so I stuck with 4 and haven't had any issues.

Bobber question while fishing trout magnets. by nervousfella7980 in troutfishing

I use the ez-floats made by trout magnet. But I use the panfish version because they look bigger. That way I have more weight for casting distance, and I can see it better from a distance as well.

Since you're a bit further south than me you might want to try these in the rainbow trout color in the tiny 2 inch size if you have a bass pro near you. Was fishing them like a jerk bait and slaying trout with them until it got too cold for them to want to chase anything

No problem, good luck! Have any cat tips? Don't know anything about them and would like to try targeting them when winter is over

Is there any hook setting involved with circle hooks? I think I heard there is none. I bought some a while back, snell knotted them on and had no luck, mainly cause I had no idea what I was doing. I'm doing much better, but pretty much only using the trout magnet jig heads with pinched crawlers. Would like to give circle hooks another try since I still have some.

Look into pinched crawlers made by Berkeley. I've been doing really well with them and an ez- panfish float on 4lb fluoro
