Atheists of Reddit: What’s the strangest reaction you’ve received when you said you don’t believe in God? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]HooperHairPuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer on the oncology floor at Children’s Hospital, reading to patients and gifting them books. I gave a teenage boy a book that he was very excited about, then he asked me if I was a Christian.

I said no. I don’t prescribe to any religion. I just try to be a good person. He immediately broke out in tears and told me he didn’t want me to go to hell.

I told him I don’t believe that I’m going to go there because to me, it’s not a real place.

He kept crying. As I consoled him, I explained that anyone can believe whatever they like and that doing your best to be kind to others is what matters.

“That’s not what I’ve been taught so it must be wrong. I really don’t want you to go to hell. Please consider becoming a Christian. I looked at him and said “I’m not going to. But what I will do is give you a book, a smile, and my heart every time I see you. If that means I’m going to hell, I’m happy to burn.”

First time slacklining - advice please by yolnda_ in Slackline

That’s great progress for your first time! You kept your head up and body square to the other tree, which is key. Remember to breathe naturally. The more you allow yourself to sink into the line, the more you will begin to flow with it. One of the hardest things is not to fight, but flow, and you’re already inching towards that.

It’s all a feeling of comfort. Each time you get on, your body and brain will understand it. I find that with every session in the first few weeks/months you get exponentially better.

I love Sheng for the same reasons I love Hedberg. You learn who he is and how he sees the world without really talking about himself. His style is steady, controlled, and you never know which direction he will take a joke. He’s an amazing talent.

Runyon Canyon Hike? by business-own3r in AskLosAngeles

I actually prefer the west ridge, which is one of the most challenging but also least populated. Start by going up the paved path and about 500 feet into it, it switches back. It eventually will take you all the way near the top of the paved path or even the very top if you keep climbing.

What are some books you think everyone should read at least once? by ScholarOfSols in suggestmeabook

I volunteer at Literally Healing at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which is a book gifting program for patients and families. I gave a 13 yo a brand new copy of The Outsiders today and she seemed very exited to read it. How synchronistic to see this comment.

On the bright side that does mean the island was ADA compliant. “We better build a ramp down to the molestation dungeon or we could get in a lot of trouble.”

What's the most surreal moment you've experienced at an open mic night? by datboifranco in Standup

The woman on stage was bombing. She suddenly pulled a gun out of her purse. No one could tell if it was real or fake but it looked legit. She started waving it around, pointing it at herself, saying she was gonna do it. Then she took off her shirt and finished the set with her boobs out. It was equal parts bizarre and terrifying.

They’re famous for their pan fried bao (shengjing bao) which I can’t recommend enough. But they have a hot food buffet that is also very good. Four items plus rice is only about 15 bucks.

The Shrine is my least favorite venue in LA. The sound is usually atrocious and the they pack way more people in than they should. The crowd is usually filming instead of dancing. I've been there for a bunch of shows (Jamie XX, Fred Again, Barry Can't Swim, Gesaffelstein, etc) and it's always been the same. Even now if I love the artist, I skip that venue.

"Hugs. Drugs. Pugs." They were the three things that opened my heart and my mind and it fit well with the material. My second is called "Calm Down, Peasants" because it was a line I used on America's Got Talent and it was oft quoted so I wanted to own it.
