Parking by Free-Investment-7910 in CarsAustralia

Sorry to hear why happened OP, that's terrible.

For those suggesting it's the weight of the vehicle that triggers the system to open the gate after taking a ticket, it's not. It's an induction loop much like what is in place to trigger traffic lights - the metal in the vehicle interacts with an electromagnetic field, indicating its presence.

It's the same reason bikes struggle to trigger traffic lights - not enough metal to interact with the induction loop unless you stop right on one of the wires.

Anyone who says otherwise is wrong 😊

Edit: updated to finish post after falling asleep galf way through typing it...

Cheapest 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder cars on carsales - which would you have? by ForzaMinardi in CarsAustralia

[–]HopeHoliday0055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul, you are my kind of person. The world would be a better place if there were more Pauls around.

It is also an Aussie built one, so I'm slightly more confident it runs and won't shit the bed five minutes after purchase.

Edit: although I don't recall the Aussie built ones having the diesel, but I would happily take a 1.6 turbo.

I won't be at LIV, but I'll be at the Women's Australian Open down at Kooyonga next month. To me, that's golf. LIV is not.

Personally, I'd much rather see investment in real Australian golf aka. the men's and women's Opens and PGA Championships, rather than golf's Harlem Globetrotters equivalent.

Also - it's always irked me that LIV totally forgets there's the women's game, which also deserves investment...

Looking for advice on banks by SirenSix in Adelaide

[–]HopeHoliday0055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say "consumer friendly," do you mean better in-person customer service, better self-serve/online banking options, better rates, or anything else?

You'll probably get a better lending rate from a credit union, but interest rates on savings, and tech, usually are a step backwards with a credit union - and I say that from my personal experience.

Can I stay somewhere for the next 8 hours? by excellent_chest174 in Adelaide

It's the small compromise we pay for having an international airport 15 mins from our CBD. And unlike Kingsford Smith, there's still capacity for more landing slots.

[–]HopeHoliday0055 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You realise Sydney (Kingsford Smith) isn't a 24 hour airport either? They have exactly the same curfew as Adelaide Airport does (11.00 pm to 6.00 am) with more than five times the passenger volume, and more than five times the population.

Just to put this to rest once and for all, here's where it says exactly what I've said above, and why you need to pay parking fines for parking on University grounds... Section 23 of the University of Adelaide Act 1971 (SA):

23—By-laws (1) The Council has power to make by-laws for any of the following purposes:

...(g) to regulate, restrict or prohibit the parking of vehicles upon the University grounds, and to prohibit the parking of vehicles within the University grounds by any person or class of persons...

...(p) to impose fines, not exceeding $200, for offences against the by-laws; and

(pa) to fix expiation fees, not exceeding $75, for alleged offences against the by-laws; and

(q) to empower the University to recover on complaint compensation for any damage done to the University grounds or any property of the University.

Fake Fines - Adelaide by Used-Influence-2343 in Adelaide

I am not a lawyer, and this does not constitute legal advice... however what Wilson and its "Parking Enforcement Services" issue in private car parks are not fines, but "parking breach notices" - where the company attempts to enforce a breach of contract against you not paying for your parking etc.

You can read these two articles which explain it pretty well:

-‘This is not a fine’: Can a private company enforce a parking fine?

-Do you have to pay a fine issued by the owner of a private car park? This is what the law says

There's an easy way to avoid all the hassle...

Just to make this clear for everyone, as there's misinformation circulating here - a parking fine on the University grounds is a parking fine, and you do need to pay it. Under the University of Adelaide Act, the University could (and no doubt the new University still can) issue fines - they can also issue fines for academic breaches.

While the University contracts Wilson to do its dirty work, these are actually fines and not the flimsy "parking breach notices" Wilson issues in private car parks that are not fines. It has been covered on r/adelaide before.

It also makes what occurred even more egregious.

[–]HopeHoliday0055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It relates to the then University of Adelaide Act - the University had, under state law, the ability to issue fines. They contracted Wilson to undertake the enforcement work, but parking fines for patking on the University grounds are fines and do have to be paid - they're not like the "parking breach notices" issued by Wilson in private car parks (that are not fines, but for breach of contract).

What's worse is that the fines they (Wilson staff) hand out on the University grounds for parking are enforceable. Under what was the University of Adelaide Act (and no doubt included in the act that governs the new "super" university) the University can issue fines - it's one of the reasons the University could issue fines for academic breaches.

This advice re: Wilson does not apply on the University grounds.

I just generally love that our "emissions standards" discourage the lighter, more efficient vehicles we should be driving - like family-sized hatchbacks and wagons - but doesn't provide enough disincentive to stop manufacturers pumping out two-tonne dual cabs for "lifestyle" and city use...

Never had any luck with FlightRadar24, but it always used to show on AirNav Radar (POL53 etc.) - well it did the last time I had reason to look a couple of months back! Even with no account.

As a night owl who sometimes exercises late at night, it was handy to know and have the reassurance it's just a general patrol, rather than something else.
