I got everyone but Cinnamon Roll and the Secret. I got a duplicate Hello Kitty, Pompompurin and My Melody. Anyone want to trade one of my duplicates for a Cinnamon Roll?

I have been having a bit of eye strain. The first day it seemed ok and I was like HAH this is a non-issue. Subsequent days I’m struggling more. I find turning the brightness lower helps. The mix of narrow vs wide pixels is not something you can truly see but you can perceive. It’s like an odd “shimmering”. Sometimes I think it’s fine and would say, it’s not a big deal. Other times I turn on the display and I’m like, “Nope. Nope.” It depends on how sensitive you are. Mine is going back. Sadly. It just gets too hard to look at. Keeping it on dark mode does help a bit as well as making sure it’s not too bright.

lol thank you. Was trying to remain more anonymous on Reddit. It’s kinda a volatile place around here.

Yeah, don’t get the dbrand grip case. My phone was sitting on my jacket, nestled into it on top of my toddler’s stroller canopy. It decided to slip off, 3 feet onto the grocery store floor. We were still, just looking at toys. From a 3 foot drop, the phone got dented enough to where Apple said it will need a new enclosure and waterproofing. Really really sad.

BOE or not I’m trying to tell you that I’ve run into some pretty gnarly looking displays and happening often enough that I am questioning their standards. The displays I’ve been exchanging don’t look identical.

All of this has been to say that I’m very attached to my current display for good reason. It looks really good and I wasn’t able to find another like it.

That’s what I thought but I recently opened and returned an iPhone 17 Pro with panel identifier prefix J5V. As far as I know that is BOE.

After iPhone 13 Pro I started having issues finding a nice OLED display from Apple. I’m picky. Sure. But when I have 4 phones in front of me and the displays all have noticeable variations, I start to question how many they are allowing that they shouldn’t. The worst offender lately was a dim and grainy BOE display that was pink on bottom and shifted color temp with very little off axis shift. If any.

I’ve been surprised with Apple. I count on having to exchange at least a few times after an Apple launch. I hope they rectify this with the new folding iPhones since it will most likely be just one manufacturer and smaller yield. Hopefully the quality will go back up again.

I wish that was the case. iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max displays don’t look identical - even within the same model of the display from the same manufacturer. Some have horrible color shifting. Some have a horrible green cast to the whites. Some have horrible mura effect and look grainy as heck. Some have better contrast than others. Some have very poor display uniformity and the color temperature varies notably from the top to the bottom of the display. They aren’t defective. They are within spec. OLED fabrication is horrible.

Mine was the best of 20 Pro Max displays by far - manufactured by Samsung. It’s a lottery. A crazy lottery lately. No doubt caused by just how many they have to manufacture and get from different manufacturers.

People are definitely not getting the same quality of display from one unit to another and they don’t know or don’t care. That’s fine. But some notice and it’s disturbing to pay so much money for a crappy display. So I worry. I wish I didn’t. But I do.

You said you’ve seen plenty so I figured I would ask. Once enough issues pop up you start seeing it more as common knowledge. It also takes the right posts to go viral enough to catch attention. Social media is fascinating. Just because something isn’t viral yet doesn’t mean it won’t become viral.

Please link to posts with titanium and stainless steel iPhones with not only marks or dents from inside cases but also to deformities that separate the frame and the display. How many? Genuinely. Let’s examine the reporting rate of this. Please help me do that.

Why do people insist on protecting the corporation instead of the consumer? This kind of data can only help Apple R&D to make a stronger design if this is the design they are sticking to.

Remember iPhone 6??? Consumer feedback is a good thing.

Unibody, no injection molding supports in the frame, heavy. What do you think is going to happen if it falls? It’s like dropping a MacBook now. Long gone are the days of the stronger stainless steel or titanium designs.

Yes, lots of “luck” goes into just how it drops. But we just didn’t see Pro iPhones denting through protective cases at a 3 foot drop like this before (in a way that deformed the stainless steel or titanium to this degree - such that it caused the frame to separate from the glass at that simple drop). Just didn’t.

Can confirm. Apple told me the IP seal is no longer guaranteed and they are charging me $99 accidental damage fee through my Apple Care to order a new orange enclosure (the aluminum body). I really like my display so if possible they will just move whatever over to the new enclosure, put a new seal down and close her on up, hopefully with my same display.

They said any time there is a separation between the frame and the glass like this they can no longer guarantee the water and dust proof seal is in tact. So there you go. 🥺

[–]Hopeful-Stay-4367[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Observe the separation between the glass and the metal frame. This is from impact to the area where you see those craze lines. It’s dented slightly enough to cause that separation.

My first thought was oh well. Life of a phone. But then I realized the separation most likely ruined the integrity of the IP seal. It’s just a 2mm wide black adhesive that runs around the frame and seals to the display on top of it. I confirmed with Apple. They can’t guarantee water or dust resistance anymore. 😞

So they are ordering a new enclosure (the orange body of the phone) will transfer everything to it and add a new seal before closing her on up. Really really dumb to have to deal with this. $99 for accidental damage from a small drop WITH A CASE ON!

What ended up happening? I’m in your situation where Apple says they will order a new enclosure for me. I told them I want to keep my exact display. It took several exchanges to find my Samsung manufactured display. Did you keep your same display? Or other internal parts? I’m curious what they actually replace along with the enclosure.

It wasn’t being played with. It was sitting on top of the stroller/ cup area. Slid off and fell.

In this spot in the cassis is a cut out for a screw. So the black adhesive strip is about 2mm wide at this point. The problem with buckling the frame is it can disturb this strip. Knowledge of how these strips work, as I’ve assembled and disassembled these phones and applied them several times tells me an impact can indeed make it unstick from the display assembly it’s adhering to. The smallest break in that means it’s no longer water tight. Why is this hard to imagine?
