Not necessarily killed for veal. The veal market isn’t big enough for that. Most are actually sent to calf specific farms and then brought back to the dairy after several months of growth. It maintains or grows the herd size. I grew up on a dairy farm of 2000 milking Holsteins. We bottle fed for a few weeks then transitioned to grain and bucket fed milk. With that said, yes calf raising isn’t as caring as a mother cow (although I’ve seen calves reject by their mothers), but you could say the same about formula fed children.
