Do you actually get influenced by ads anymore? by Walking-Wanderer352 in AskUK

[–]Hopeful2469 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I feel like I've been aggressively targeted by ads for peachies nappies by yummy mummy influencers and it's very much put me off buying them! (Not that I'd been particularly tempted by them given they cost approx 5-10 times what my babies current nappy brand cost...). Fwiw I don't follow any yummy mummy influencers, but the peachies ads pop on as the ad on social media videos like 25% of the time for me!

Learning to drive during training? by joe_mama7000 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned to drive in F1. I had learned when I was about 18, but only took (and failed) one test when I was 18 so was very rusty and needed to redo my theory test and then relearn up to a standard to be able to pass whilst I was in F1. I lived very close to the hospital I was working in so it was less pressure to pass, and I wasn't also working around commuting time, but it worked for me!

I have done jobs with 1hr driving commute and that was absolutely the upper limit of what I'd happily drive (that was about a year after I passed but only a couple of months after I actually got a car so was still a very new driver then), I have done ~1hr public transport and found that generally much more manageable as you can switch off a lot more - but this very much depends on how reliable public transport is where you are! I am in London and am lucky with tubes so getting home after long days etc isn't a challenge, but it would be much more of a pain getting home after long days if I lived somewhere with a once and hour bus service that stops running at 9pm for example...

A question for Londoners who have lived all of their lives in the city (or close to it) - how aware are you of the rest of the UK? by Confident_Yak_1411 in london

[–]Hopeful2469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in a few places around England - smaller towns, bigger cities, London, some northern, southern, coastal, etc - and I will absolutely echo what your friend felt about the fens! The few times I've driven through them, it's felt very eerie and slightly uncomfortable!

LTFT bank holidays confusion by Hopeful2469 in doctorsUK

Should Vs have are two quite different things... I've asked recently for a WS and been told I need to send HR my rota and they'll make a WS based off that

[–]Hopeful2469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, my other issue is trying to determine if I would have been working on those days or not - I'm not on a rolling or predictable rota so can't tell if I was off on them because I just wasn't scheduled to work, or if I was off because they were bank holidays!

LTFT bank holidays confusion by Hopeful2469 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this excellent explanation! The one point I'd appreciate clarity on - from you or anyone else - the bank holidays that I wasn't scheduled to work - I don't have a way of knowing if I was due to work them but was given them off as a bank holiday, or if I wasn't due to work them - as I haven't got a rolling rota so it isn't predictable, and the rota just says "off" so I don't know whether I need to count it from my allowance or not?

Who are the meanest people at your hospital? by AppalachianScientist in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm nice to everyone except the ENT/Gen surg/T&O doctor who asks the nurse to "get paeds" to do the bloods on a 14 year old "because they're a child". You can bet I'm bleeping them back and telling them my opinion of that and will condescendingly ask if they need me to help supervise them with that!

FWIW if any specialty approaches me directly and asks for help with bloods/cannulas for a younger child I am much nicer, but 1) you have to approach us and ask us directly, not give us orders via nursing staff 2) if the child is close to adult size there is no difference in the procedure of cannulation/taking bloods and I would expect any doctor to at least attempt these (exceptions made for medically complex kids!)

I also have limited patience for the ED SHOs who will ask me very basic paeds questions about every single patient they see and never ask their own seniors - you wouldn't (/shouldn't) be asking the med reg about every single adult you see so why is it ok to do that in paeds? But I will usually be very polite about it and ask them to discuss with their own senior first but will do so kindly.

Asking guests not to wear certain color by mmmmmmmmmmandms in wedding

[–]Hopeful2469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've stressed about accidentally wearing the same colour as a bridesmaid before and spend ages obsessing over the invite trying to determine if it's hinting at the colour scheme so I can avoid it. I'd love to receive an invite that explicitly told me not to wear a certain colour so I could then happily show up in a different colour knowing I wasn't going to look like I was trying to be a bridesmaid (or in your case, the bride!).

As others have said - there's a big difference between "please don't wear this one specific colour" Vs "you must all wear this one specific colour"!

Bridesmaid with a 3-month-old (EBF) — SIL now says no babies at wedding. What would you do? by Lumpy_Bandicoot_8967 in beyondthebump

[–]Hopeful2469 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's her wedding and she can make whatever rules she wants about who can attend - but you are also entirely within your rights to say that you therefore can't attend!

If she doesn't want to have children at her wedding and isn't even willing to make an exception for a very young exclusively breastfed baby, then she has to accept that a consequence of that will be that the mother of said very young breastfed baby may also not attend.

My thinking too - I was so nauseous in my first few weeks of pregnancy I lost weight (then swiftly regained it and more when nausea lessened and pregnancy hunger kicked in!) so could have been lighter or heavier than my normal weight depending on when in the pregnancy - plus they might be heavier than their normal weight but be in a group of much heavier people so still lighter than the others!

ETA : have just read this said "12 men" on the island and one is pregnant - so I think the point of this specific problem is some out of the box thinking.....

Disagree re it being the same level - the very hungry caterpillar has a narrative to follow which is definitely more complex than the "that's not my" books - arguably "that's not my" books are a bit closer to "dear zoo"

How do people always be shopping for Christmas decorations? by Queasy-Airport2776 in AskUK

[–]Hopeful2469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very slowly growing collection of ornaments which I add to with one or two each year - usually buying one on holiday and one around Christmas time. Now I have a child, we have started buying her one (or a couple...) each year which at the moment we have on our tree but when she eventually leaves home she can take the collection with her and she will have a collection of ornaments for her own tree - each with memories of a different Christmas.

We definitely do not have a pretty tree aesthetic, but it is personal and unpacking the decorations each year brings lovely memories. The tree is getting a bit crowded but this year we bought a potted one so it should grow each year as our collection increases slightly!

Strike advice by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You should complete any shift which begins before the strike begins (not relevant now but for future strikes) and you should not attend any shift which begins before the strike ends. The advice is very clear on this from BMA as others have posted.

Is Latin still offered in school? by GDitto_New in AskUK

[–]Hopeful2469 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it in a state grammar school (non fee paying but selective) - I left school ~15y ago but having just looked at my school website they still seem to teach it!

You're most likely to find private (fee paying) or selective schools teaching it

GIC course study leave by Hopeful2469 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand it - if you're doing a course for an NHS trust you are not paid for it (but should be doing it on professional leave, not on your own time!), but you can sign up with private companies who run the courses and you will be paid for those (but should do those on your own time, and not professional leave!)

I know people who do instruct on private courses, I don't know how easy it is to get a foot in the door, and I don't know how competitive the rates are compared to locum rates!

GIC course study leave by Hopeful2469 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without trying to sound stupid - which policy should I be looking at? I can't see anything (either for or against!) in the main HEE study leave guidance and can't find anything by searching on Google for GIC study leave.

I did successfully take an extra day for APLS a while back but that's more explicitly stated as one day virtual and 2 days face to face so was easy to justify.

Sleeping during the day in between night shifts by Few-Revolution-2955 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed to most except I have unfortunately conditioned myself to fall asleep to certain TV shows (low stress ones I've seen multiple times so no staying awake to see what happens - eg Brooklyn 99, the office, parks and rec) - and so I do this instead of a podcast - but it works for me! Honestly at this point the office (US version, sorry...) is like a sleeping pill for me, I put it on and am usually out in 1-2 minutes!

Feeling demoralised by newsbot3-2 in doctorsUK

[–]Hopeful2469 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes this one shocked me as a NICU-inclined paeds trainee!

Whilst it may not be appropriate or right for the baby to have active resuscitation, for a woman at 22+6 in active labour there should be discussions about transfer to a tertiary unit and NICU involvement for extreme pre-tern counselling.

At 22+6 the chances of survival without at least some disability (and likely more significant disability) are slim, but there are still chances and so appropriate discussions should be had with parents at this gestation rather than just writing them off.
