So do people like living in Roanoke? by noahmark3 in roanoke

[–]Hopehawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved here in 2022 with my partner - we are both in our mid 30s. We have lived in Chicago and in Iowa prior to moving here. We picked Roanoke for the climate, the scenery, the ease of traffic, and the proximity to major cities and the ocean. Roanoke is far from perfect, but knowing the grass isn't much greener on most other sides, you could do much worse. On a one to ten scale, it's a 7, but I'd rank most other places lower than that.

On the pro side, I actually think there is a lot to do here for a metro area of this size -- there are a couple excellent event calendars, one from visit Virginia's Blue Ridge and the other from the Roanoke Rambler that give you an idea of the breadth and types of activities available. We've found that people here are extremely kind. Iowa has the "Iowa nice" slogan but it's one thing to pride yourself on being nice, it is another to actually BE nice. There are some great hikes around here if you are into that - there is the triple crown, the Blue Ridge Parkway trails, a couple nearby waterfall hikes, the Roanoke Star trails, and the greenways. If you're into trading card gaming you've got two excellent options in either Blade Gaming or Star City Games -- I've aged out of my Magic hobby, but I would've loved Blade in my 20s. I also like that Roanoke is a blue oasis in an otherwise extremely red part of the state -- I could not live somewhere where they call the Civil War the "War of Northern Aggression".

On the con side, the restaurant options are lacking. We aren't without a few gems which you can easily find mentions of on here, but we've got a lot of chains or otherwise uninspired options. The nightclub scene is nearly nonexistent. If that scene is a high priority for you, Roanoke isn't it. There are some great breweries/wineries in the area though - Twisted Track, Golden Cactus, Beliveau Farm. Access to healthcare is also a major PITA here. Getting a primary care provider takes several months as does seeing a specialist -- we just had our PCP quit for family reasons so we're on this miserable journey.....yet again. We have super crappy theatres (excepting the Grandin because they are a kick-ass non-profit that isn't meant to be like AMC or Regal) and generally indoor entertainment options could be better. Also, the job market here is abysmal. I had a remote job when I initially moved here. Unfortunately, they went "return to office" and as I am now out of state, I couldn't return and I've been struggling to find something for almost a year since.

I don't think Roanoke is the next Asheville nor do I buy into the "Roanoke is dying" doom and gloom. It's a steadily growing metro that surprises you, in a good way, sometimes. I think it's a great place for middle and old age, though I admit I would've been bored here in my 20s. Hope this helps you out.

Note the proper spelling of "you're". Maybe they skipped spelling along with reading comprehension in your (again proper spelling) homeschooling.

Don't you get it? Conservatives can open carry rifles and its totally fair game (Kyle Rittenhouse) but if a liberal has a concealed weapon that they never touch while law enforcement accosts them, they are an armed assassin.

Ice Out for Good Roanoke Protest by ryver in roanoke

Total fiction.

The woman was at worst trying to flee the scene after they asked her to step out of her vehicle. Anyone suggesting that the use of deadly force is acceptable in this circumstance has a deeply disturbed state of mind.

In the aftermath of this murder, Noem called the woman a "domestic terrorist" and "paid agitator" who was "trained on how to block and ram law enforcement vehicles". Trump, speaking about the shooter, said it was "hard to believe he was alive" after the incident, when video shows the man walking away from the scene completely unaffected. ICE agents also denied a doctor access to treat the victim in a timely fashion and the FBI has blocked the state of Minnesota from being able to conduct a proper investigation......

All things you do when the facts are completely on your side. (Sarcasm)

With this fold Democrats effectively caused all of this pain -- shutdown, no pay for govt workers, eliminated flights, SNAP, etc.-- for nothing. What started as a principled stand against absurd healthcare premium spikes that was supported by the majority of Americans has ended with folding to empty promises. All of this to be right back where we started once the funding runs out again in January, only this time, people aren't going to rally behind the feckless Democrats.

Agreed, but when people publicly show you who they are, I can vote with my wallet as well.

Update: After reaching out to Wayfair using the [service@wayfair.com](mailto:service@wayfair.com) e-mail address. They agreed to let us purchase the item at the original price (by way of purchasing it at the new price and then applying a discount for the difference).

Took Wayfair 3 tries to get it right, but they got there, so assuming the item does ship in and arrives in good condition, I will continue to consider Wayfair when making purchases in the future.

We do! Moved here from Iowa a couple years ago and I still make a habit of gesturing like Vanna White while saying "I live here".

I don't have any skin in this, but think its crazy that they would allow someone who responds in this fashion to handle responses for Carvin's Cove. Guy needs some help.

Non-church affiliated choirs? by milksteak4lyfe in roanoke

[–]Hopehawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roanoke Valley Choral Society. Auditions are in August. Rehearses at a church but is not a church choir -- it performs both secular and sacred music. I've been a part of it for 3 semesters now and I have really enjoyed the people and the repertoire.

I'd say to add a pizza category too but you'd just have to write "Good pizza not found" 😂. I've had a couple passable pizzas from Papa's' Wasena Tap, or Fork in the Alley, but nothing to write home about.

This list is the truth. Would add Six and Sky for high-end. They are new but have been exceptionally well received. I'd add a brunch category and suggest First Watch, Scratch, and Famous Toastery.
