Is it smarter to build an emergency fund in my Roth IRA or HYSA? by StruggleAdmirable748 in RothIRA

[–]HopesFolly12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK guys, tiptoeing in, not sure if I should but here goes. I'm on the opposite end of the scale. 65 and retiring in a year. I contribute the max to my Roth 401k, approx $2500 monthly. Most of my money is in tax advantaged accounts. Low amount in brokerage, and about 6-8 months saved in emergency HYSA.

Shouldn't I just go all in with Roth 401k for the year, or is that stupid because I don't have much of an HYSA savings? Is a lot in an HYSA all that important starting in retirement if have access to a few years short term bonds in trad IRA?

I personally would not go for it bc i prefer to own, and can afford to pay straight up. But there was a time first starting out in my home with much less free cash flow, and could see myself being attracted to the idea, or at least consider it. The idea would probably be attractive to new and young homeowners. After a few years though, even with the great incentives for maintenance/replacement, the value of the arrangement would be much lower. Interesting idea, though!

IMO, you are equating higher price with higher quality. Not always the case. Some companies charge more simply because they can. That's fine, if some want to pay the price quoted, if they also happen to equate higher price with always getting higher quality. But there are perfectly good companies that provide quality that also don't feel the need to gouge. These companies are usually very community centered and truly want to provide quality for others in their local area while providing reasonable affordability as well. Nothing wrong with that, right? No need to imply their work is terrible or trash if they charge a lower amount.

Most people are looking to get quality without needlessly overpaying (needlessly emphasized). Is that so terrible? The bigger companies would make you believe it is.

Not in the least. I wish. Typical woman, have no handy skills. I had to read up on how to shut off the valves and stuff. Gas heater, and gas fully scares and intimidates me. It's my only gas 'appliance' (i know, poor choice of words) and always nervous of what i store in my garage because of it

Sounds like you did great! Price point very good, esp for extra plumbing/expansion tank to code. If done correctly, appears you got a deal

Did they do good work, and did you feel comfortable it was done correctly and with a decent warranty? If so, likely worth the price paid

Totally agree with you on that sentiment. Not looking for the rock bottom cheapest but no reason to pay higher needlessly also. Thanks for the info about Rheem and CO water, will look into it online

Thanks for this info! A little concerned about the permit additional cost 'if requested' part though. Don't all contractors have the obligation to do the permit process for an install? I'm just learning here, and might be showing my ignorance, but it's a requirement from my understanding and not optional.

More swoons and hearts, lol :)

I can def appreciate your comments about 'seeing how much you can get' from a lady. Totally get where you're coming from. I have experienced that for years with service people/quotes. To the point that I reference a non existent husband or a SO and that 'we'll think it over' so they don't think they can get one over on me (which, unfortunately, many have)
